PRISTINE PLACEBOARD OF DIRECTORS

PRESIDENT’S REPORTby Carol Prible

Upcoming MeetingThere was no meeting In December. Next month the

thmeeting will January 24 at 7 pm. We will announce the winner of the Christmas decoration contest.

New NewsI want to thank Ted Westervelt for all he has done for our community. And for all the money he saved the community. We were sad to lose Ted as our President. Ted resigned do to all the harassment and threats that he was getting. He decided that was enough, so we will miss him and I would like to send an apology out to Ted, Sorry we have some neighbors here in our community that just can't be nice. I want to thank Tony Rizzo and John Johnson, John Albanese, John Burkhart, Mel Haines, and Ed Sferratore for all that they did for us in the clubhouse. All the volunteers on the club house saved this community a ton of money, sorry to see most of you go. We will miss you all. I want to thank Jean and John Johnson for doing the Community board and painting the curbs. (your address numbers). I want to thank the ladies, Cheryl Fiehler, Janice Bulla, Diane Farrell, Virginia Gange, Dolly Braggiotti and Maria Maggiore and myself for all the work we have done for the social committee, we are looking for anyone to take over.

Election CommitteeI want to apologize to the Election committee for the accusation that they could not be trusted. They have been doing this for years and have never been accused like this. It has offended each and every one on the committee and for this I am truly sorry that was said. So, I would like to thank Dottie Rizzo, Pete Maggiore, John Albanese, John Burkhart, Cheryl Fiehler, Ed Sferratore and for Carl Pletcher for overseeing this which took 2 ½ hours. They did an awesome job and you are all appreciated.

New OfficersI am proud to take over the President position. I know with the help from Mike Spall and John Ellis we will succeed in during a great job for all of you. We welcome Dan Lowe as

So please remember all the volunteers are doing this job for free and Gratitude goes a long way, please let's get along with each other, wave to your neighbor maybe say good morning or a hello, you never know how bad the other person has it, they might be lonely or sad, they might be sick or just not happy, so be nice to each other and make pristine a place that people want to live.I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday and I want to wish you and your families a very Happy New Year.

Many of the dogs placed with our program veterans are

found in homeless pet shelters and rescues. And so, two

lives in crisis begin a journey of transformation together.

Their service dog becomes their new battle buddy and

together, they save each other.

As always we seek community input for clubhouse upgrades, changes and any other improvements. You can also email me at [email protected]. All suggestions are most welcome.

Your CERT Team goes inactive!

After over 10 years Pristine Place will no longer have an Emergency Response Team. The team established in the mid 2000 at one time had over 32 members. At the start of the 2016 hurricane season there were only 8 members, one of whom is not a resident. Not sufficient to supply search & rescue and first aid during the up to 72 hours before professional responders could get here. Even 32 were a very thin line of assistance to a community of over 700 homes. The experts tell us that 40% of the members of any response unit, professional or volunteer will be unavailable or unable to respond during a large scale event.

The remaining active team members saw that saying that Pristine Place had a group of trained volunteers who would/could respond to a large scale emergency would create a great a false sense of support.

The Board of Director's who have been strong supporters of the CERT program along the CERT team leaders have agreed that the items purchased for or given to CERT will be dealt with in the following way:

Items with a shelf life will be donated to a local volunteer group

Equipment and items without a shelf life will be retained by the community.

I and the other team leaders: John Arendt, Asst Team Leader, Mel Haines, Search & Rescue Leader, and Carolyn Riley, RN Medical Leader would like to thank the past team members who took the 40 hours of training, took part in monthly refresher training and were prepare to answer the call to assist their friends and neighbors over the course of the last 10 years Denis Riley, RN, CRT, CRSMST Team Leader/Trainer

Prune your roses. First year plants should be trimmed very lightly, mainly to clean out twiggy, unproductive inside growth. A certain amount of pruning is done all through the year, every time a bloom is cut. Any dead or unhealthy canes should be removed immediately. Clean, sharp clippers are a must. Major pruning of mature rose bushes is done from mid-January to mid-February.

Other suggestions for the month of January include the following:

Deciduous fruit: Now is the time to plant deciduous fruit trees. This will give roots time to develop before the warm and dry spring months.

Irrigation: Plants may need water if temperatures remain higher than normal and rainfall is scarce.

Shrubs and Trees: Prune non-spring flowering shrubs and trees this month to improve form.

Arbor Day: Florida observes Arbor Day January 18th. To celebrate, plant a tree in your yard or community.

Crepe Myrtle: While crepe myrtles do not require pruning, removing seed pods, crossing branches and small twiggy growth improves the appearance and form of the plant.

Pests: To control scale on citrus, shrubs, camellias, and deciduous fruit trees, apply horticultural oil while plants are dormant.

Bedding Plants: Plants that can be added to the garden during the coolest months include calendula, carnation, pansy, petunia, shasta daisy, and snapdragons.

Bulbs: Crinum, agapanthus, and gloriosa lily can be planted now. Provide a layer of mulch for protection from cold temperatures.

Camellias: Select and plant camellias this month. Visit local nurseries now for the best selection of colors and forms.

Vegetables: Continue planting cool season crops including beets, cabbage, turnips, lettuce, and broccoli.

January’s Landscaping Tips

Protect your sensitive plants from frosts and freezes.

Do not fertilize your lawn and irrigate only as needed.

Apply broadleaf herbicides to control weeds.

Service your mower and check your irrigation system.

Prune your roses.

Rich and Carol Ruland have been kind enough to take over the task of painting the house numbers on curbs. Please call them at 352-684-2628 if you are interested. The cost for this service is $15 and well worth it. We would like to say thank you to Jean and John Johnson for doing this in the past. Some of our members have been part of this committee for many years and are unable to continue to serve. As the amount of volunteers has dwindled, there are many days on our monthly calendar that we have no one to patrol. We need more people to keep this service going, so if anyone would like to join and can spare a couple of hours a month, please call Virginia at 516-697-6095.The Sheriff Dept has issued some suggestions to pass on to our residents: Please remember to close your garage door every night. There has been an increase of burglaries of home where the garage doors have been left open at night. Also the theft of unlocked vehicles has increased, so please remember to lock your car doors and don't leave valuables in your car that can be seen.Remember if you see something suspicious please call the Sheriff non-emergency phone number of 352-754-6830.
