• Why Cat 8, Class I & II with 2,000MHz over copper?• The demand for higher bandwidths such as 40Gb/s in

data centers is rising and is currently implemented over multi-fiber links

• However, this is expensive over short distances as in a ToR (Top of Rack / Top of Row) topology for the high costs of active electronics involved, i.e. transmission over copper cabling for short distances would save costs

• It is highly probable that copper cabling in support of these bandwidths will be installed within the next two to three years

• The Cat 8 / Class I & II discussion leaves still question marks

Certify – What‘s that?

• Certification refers to the verification of the compliance of products/services and their manufacturing processes with relevant standards.

• In contrast to accreditation, general certification is attested by the issuance of a certificate

• In network technology, this certification has to be performed compliant with EN50173 (topology/limits), EN50174 (quality plan), EN50436 (tester specs) or ISO/IEC11801 and typically requires the use of devices priced at around 8000 € and higher

Propagation Delay The time a signal needs to travel from one end of a link to the other end

Delay SkewThe difference in propagation delay between the longest and the shortest pair within a link

Measurement Description

Insertion Loss (IL)The signal attenuation from point of insertion to the end of the cable run

Near End Crosstalk (NEXT)

The undesired coupling of a signal from one pair of wires to another in the same cable at the near-end

Return Loss (RL)Ratio of the input voltage to the voltage of the reflected signal. Reflection is caused by physical defects in the component or the cable run.

Far End Crosstalk (FEXT)

Signal coupling from one pair of wires into another pair in the same cable at the far-end.This measurement is not reported, but needed for calculation of ACR-F
