Welcome to the University of Scouting

Dear Fellow Scouters: Welcome back to the University of Scouting in the Pine Tree Council! We are excited to have you back and appreciate you joining in on a great day of Scouting. If you are new to the UoS, you’ll see why this event creates so much Scouting excitement and has become the largest gathering of adult Scouters in our council. University is “beyond the basics” supplemental training, we hope you will gain much better insight into the world's most valuable youth programs and have a whole lot of fun doing it! We are grateful for the many volunteers who have given of themselves to organize, teach and lead this event. We give thanks to our cadre of the finest Scouting volunteer and professional staff instructors BSA has to offer. These instructors were selected for their knowledge and experience and also for their creativity and enthusiasm. It is their dedication and commitment that will make this event so magnificent. Please find tools to complete your registration for this event in the back of the catalog. Although our courses are classified by BSA program (Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, etc.), you are more than welcome and encouraged to enroll in any course offered. We are pleased to note that we are once again offering our Cub Scout pow wow event (please see pow wow description on page 3). Be sure to take advantage of the early registration discount by registering right away! It is your participation that makes Scouting programs such a valuable experience for our youth! Thank you.

Take Flight Cub Scout Leaders’ POW WOW

What is Pow Wow? PowWow is the quintessential Cub Scout leader learning experience. It is a fun­filled day of hands­on classes to supplement and enrich your program. It includes FUN, fellowship, networking and lots of great ideas. It is, in and of itself, a “mini­university.” Who should attend? Any and ALL Cub leaders! Sessions are designed to help Cubmasters, den leaders, committee members and others carry out an exciting and successful Cub Scout program for the boys in your dens and pack. If you want to play a part in the success of your pack or den, you should attend. What will I do? You will have FUN! You will take five specialized, cub­oriented classes during periods 1­5, followed by a sample pack meeting during period 6. These classes are Cub Scout Potluck, Make and Take Cub Crafts, The Magic of Songs and Skits, Fun and Games Galore, and Adventures in Ceremonies. Come prepared to DO, SING and PLAY. Bring a camera and a tote to carry all your goodies! During period 6 you will participate in and experience a pack meeting like no other! We will put together all that we’ve learned and Take Flight! Pow Wow 2015 will lift you to new heights. So, crank up the burner, jump in the basket with us and watch the envelope take us up, up and away. Who knows where we’ll land! How do I register? Register early ­ this basket will fill fast! Registration fee includes all handouts and a huge PowWow Book filled with lots of crafts, recipes, skits, ceremonies, and much more! Mail in or online registrations­ Check the Pow Wow box!

POW WOW Sessions: Make and Take Cub Crafts Each participant will have the opportunity to make theme related crafts for each level in the Cub program. Materials will be provided. Lists of what you need, where to get materials and other great ideas will be included in your hand out.

The Magic of Songs and Skits Learn how to perform unique and entertaining songs and skits that will add a magic quality to any meeting. All props and lyrics will be provided. Sing, laugh and have fun!

Fun and Games Galore! Boys love games. Participants will be asked to join in and experience games which will send them soaring: indoor games, outdoor games, games with no equipment, games for all members of the den, etc.

Adventures in Ceremonies Learn the importance of ceremonies and Wow everyone at your next pack meeting, Blue and Gold, or cross­over event.

Cub Scout Potluck Interactive info­session which includes Go­To information, myths and misconceptions, Plan B – How to de­frag hand­wringing, hair­pulling and other generally awkward times.

Up… Up… and Away… Pack Meeting! Our balloon is ready for takeoff, the airplanes are fueled and ready to go, birds are squawking, and we’re ready to show off our ceremonies, skits, games, songs and crafts as we close our pow wow with an awesome pack meeting.

What’s Happening in 2015…

The Scouting Showcase Continue your education through the Scouting Showcase, which will include a wide variety of Scouting and community related displays, program materials, high­adventure and camping programs as well as valuable resources to help bring excellence to your unit’s program. The Showcase opens at 8 a.m. and will be open through periods 1,2, 3, lunch and period 4, so come on over and take home some great ideas for your Scouting program! We have an impressive line­up of organizations throughout our council that will be showing displays and resources that you can use in your Scouting program. If you would like a booth at the 2015 University of Scouting, please complete the Showcase Request Form on page 14 or contact Steve Lunn at [email protected].

Youth Leadership Institute Boy Scouts, Venturers and Explorers 14 years old and older are welcome and encouraged to attend the 2015 University of Scouting! From how to run a PLC meeting, to Eagle advancement help, to camping and outdoor skill instruction, the University is the place for older scouts to continue to develop their knowledge and leadership skills. Youth participants should select five classes from those

marked with the icon. Service to others is an important component of leadership, so Youth Leadership Institute participants will also perform one period of service. On your registration form, fill in your 5 class choices, and write ‘Service’ in either period 3 or 6. Make sure you check the box for the reduced registration fee of $10 for youth participants.

Ever wondered how they do that? Take this course from start to finish and find out firsthand how to have a successful pinewood derby for your pack.

Webelos & the Patrol Method CS03 Period 3

Preparing Webelos to function as a patrol is an important key to the success of a first year Boy Scout. Now is the time to introduce your Webelos den to the patrol method. We will teach you how it is done and give you the tools you need to make it a success.

Fundraising CS04 Period 4

Real World Solutions to Common Troop Problems

BS01 Period 1

Most Boy Scout troops share similar challenges at one point or another. Veteran Scouters will offer tips and techniques that you can take to your troop and use immediately on topics such as recruitment, parent involvement, keeping the program fresh, youth­led and adult guided program,, and how to overcome the challenges of running a troop.

Search and Rescue BS02 Period 2

Learn some basic search and rescue techniques including types of searches, team approach and litter carrying. Also, find out how you can help yourself or your group if you do get lost.

High Adventure in Maine BS03 Period 3

We have some of the best high­adventure activities right here in Maine! This course will give you lots of ideas on how to do a simple “close to home” high­adventure trip. Topics include hiking, biking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, snowshoeing, skiing as well as how to make these trips affordable and how you can do high adventure in a weekend.

Effective SM Conferences & Boards of Review BS04 Period 4

This session will illustrate the differences and similarities of the Scoutmaster conference and the board of review. Learn how to use this time to guide and give purpose to your Scouts. Discussions will include how the Scout and the troop both benefit, what to ask, what to say, what to do and how to get the most out of these conversations.

Winter Camping BS05 Period 5

This session will cover how to plan and prepare for a successful winter camping trip with your troop. Topics will include proper equipment, clothing, tour permits, food, transportation, health requirements, fun things to do and places to camp. This course includes a discussion of first­aid topics you should “be prepared” for in the cold.

Merit Badge Counselors & What’s New BS06 Period 6

This course is designed to answer your questions about what it takes to become a merit badge counselor. Discussions topics will cover the paperwork necessary to sign up, blue cards, Youth Protection training, what the Scout’s responsibilities are in fulfilling the requirements.

Menu Planning and Cooking Methods

BS11 Period 1

The meals you eat while on an outing, whether it’s a week­long camping trip or a one day hike are a critical part of a successful trip. With the right planning, your meals should be well balanced, cooked properly and delicious. Learn how to guide your Scouts in proper menu planning, food handling and storage, and cooking methods. Ever had hamburger cooked in an orange? Steak cooked on a rock? Omelets in a bag? Come learn new and different ideas.

Life to Eagle Process BS12 Period 2

So close, yet so far away! A Scout makes Life rank with eyes now focused on making Eagle. Learn about the process to get there; merit badges, leadership and the dreaded Eagle Scout service project. Discussion will include the new Eagle workbook process and more.

Annual Planning for the Troop BS13 Period 3

This course will help you understand the importance of creating an annual plan that incorporates fun, outdoor adventure, Scout skills, camping, advancement and more! All handled by the Scouts under the guidance of adult leaders.

What to do with Older Scouts BS14 Period 4

By the time an active Scout reaches high school age, often he has “seen that, done that” and sometimes loses enthusiasm. This course will explore ways to keep the older Scout active and engaged in Scouting programs. Discussions will include the high adventure patrol concept within the troop and other outdoor adventures for older Scouts.

The Patrol Method & the Patrol Leaders' Council BS15 Period 5 & 6

Baden­Powell said “The patrol method is not a way to operate a Boy Scout troop, it is the only way.” This course will teach you the importance of running the patrol method in your troop. Learn from the teachings of William (Green Bar Bill) Hillcourt and what Boy Scout “gang mentality” is all about.

Paracord is not just a life saving tool, it can also be used to make fun and functional projects. Come and see how to have fun with paracord! Open to all ages and skill levels.

Outdoor Cooking, Period 2 GS02 Period 2

Are you are interested in learning about outdoor cooking for camp outs, outdoor events or just for your own enjoyment? This session will focus on various cooking techniques such as dutch oven and foil cooking, as well as recipes and gear suggestions. All cooking abilities are encouraged to attend.

Hammock Camping GS11 Period 1

Are you tired of looking for the perfect place to set your tent? If you wake up in the morning tired and with back pain, this class is for you. Hammocks are light weight and follow the principle of Leave No Trace. Fast and super comfortable, this may be the best way to sleep in the outdoors.

Map and Compass GS12 Period 2

Learn how to read your compass and use a map. Discover how to orient a map and see what those little symbols really mean. Bring a compass if you have one.

Autism in Scouting GS13 Period 3

A practical guide to helping leaders understand and support individuals on the Autism Spectrum and with other co­existing conditions.

Ham Radio GS14 Period 4

Roundtable Commissioner Training

CM01 Periods 1, 2 & 3

A trained commissioner is an effective commissioner. This course is basic training for all roundtable commissioners.

Effective Roundtables I CM04 Period 4

Designed for roundtable commissioners and roundtable staff members. Covers basic roundtable ingredients, planning cycle and resource materials. (BCS 108)

Effective Roundtables II CM05 Period 5

Designed for roundtable commissioners and roundtable staff members as a continuation of BCS 108. Covers promotion and publicity, roundtable location, and a variety of morale builders. (BCS 109)

Administration of Roundtable Staff CM06 Period 6

An advanced seminar for roundtable commissioners and other administrative commissioners. Includes assistant roundtable commissioner recruitment, roundtable evaluation and roundtable finance. This session emphasizes the importance of the assistant district commissioner, their responsibilities, effective people skills, and the evaluation of their work. (MCS 311)

Orienting and Training Commissioners CM15 Period 5

A session for all administrative commissioners­covers all aspects of commissioner training, including new commissioner orientation, basic training, Arrowhead Honor, the Commissioner’s Key, and continuing education. A variety of classroom techniques are also reviewed. (MCS 313)

Ceremonies the Big Picture OA01 Period 1

Ceremonies are an essential part of the Order of the Arrow program. Explore why the OA uses ceremonies and learn how they can benefit the Boy Scouting and Cub Scouting program. This course will help you better understand the OA’s version of the Cross­Over, Arrow of Light, and Eagle Scout ceremony.

Learn what it means to live by the Obligation, identify how to take home the principles of the OA and the leaderships skills to your troop.

Strengthening your Troop through OA

OA03 Period 3

Enhance your troop program through the Order of the Arrow. Learn about the benefits of having Arrowmen in your unit.

OA Involvement in Cub Scouting

OA04 Period 4

Cub Scouts are the future of the Order and there are various ways that Arrowmen can help support them. This course will help you discover and better understand the different opportunities the Order of the Arrow has with strengthening the Cub Scouting program.

Elangomat 101 OA05 Period 5

OA Members Only

Being an elangomat is the most important role an Arrowmen can fulfill during an Ordeal. Not only are you a guide to the candidates but more importantly a friend. Take this class and learn all about the elangomat’s responsibility to the Order and it’s future.

Centuries of Service OA06 Period 6

The Order of the Arrow was founded in 1915 and will be celebrating is 100th anniversary throughout 2015. With the centennial year upon us there will be many exciting program and activities offered such as NOAC 2015 and ArrowTour. Come and learn about all the opportunities awaiting you and find out how you can get involved with the centennial celebration!

Scouting Showcase

Be sure to schedule a class period to visit the great displays and exhibitions in the Scouting Showcase. We’ll have the usual showcase and exhibition areas featuring summer camp, high adventure, and many others. We’ll also have vendor displays for products and services that support Scouting.

Children: This training is for adults as well as Scouts, Venturers and Explorers 14 years old or older. No provisions have been made for childcare.
