Jordan Independent - Thursday, November 5, 2009 - Page 21 police. The Jordan Police Depart- ment keeps a running log of all the bicycles reported stolen, as well as abandoned bikes officers collect. When the police receive a report of a stolen bike, they check to see if they already have it in storage. To identify a bicycle, offi- cers ask for the make and mod- el and a detailed description. The serial number, which is usually located on the un- derside of the bike’s frame near the pedals, is unique to each bike. With that number, police can distinguish between two similar-looking bikes. PRECAUTIONS Those who want to keep their bikes more secure should above all, keep them locked up. Even leaving a bike in a fenced yard isn’t enough, as kids can simply hop over the fence, Schultz said. If a bike is stolen, the po- lice will have a better chance of recovering it if the own- ers can provide all the infor- mation. Schultz recommend- ed each bike owner fill out a checklist that includes the make, model, description, se- rial number, and other identi- fiers, as well as take a photo. “Keep that for your re- cords,” Schultz said. He also suggested keeping the receipt after purchasing a bike. A more valuable bike could mean a more serious crime. If the stolen bike is valued at $1,000 or more, the crime is a felony theft. At $500, it’s a gross misdemeanor. Anything with a lower value than $500 is a misdemeanor. RECOVERY The police collect more bikes than are reported stolen. Already this year, the depart- ment has collected between 15 and 20 bikes. Schultz encouraged people to call if they’ve lost their bike. “Do call us, because we probably do have it … and the last thing we want to do is sell it,” he said. Each year during the city- wide garage sale, the police de- partment sells any bicycles it’s held for more than 90 days. COMMUNITY ISSUE Amanda called the police and reported the theft the same day it happened, Tony said, but the bike has not yet been found. Tony even searched on foot himself using a map of snow- mobile trails the police pro- vided him. “I wandered around the woods for three hours in the rain,” he said. But it’s not the first thing that’s gone missing off his property, and he knows he’s not alone. “Probably everybody in town has had something at sometime go missing,” Tony said. That doesn’t mean Jor- dan isn’t safe, he said. He just wishes parents would have more civil responsibil- ity and pay better attention to where are their kids and what they’re doing. And since he can’t find his daughter’s bike in the woods, Tony wondered if that meant it’s in somebody else’s garage. If so, he wondered, why aren’t the parents doing something? 8.
