By night...This is the venue to meet yourfriends and socialise. Gigs, quizzesand theme nights in the 400-capacity venue take place on aregular basis. The state-of-the-artDJ gallery overlooking the bar areaattracts a range of DJs from acrossthe region.

Newcastle is a great place to bea student. But don’t just take ourword for it. Be a part of it, live it!

Pubs, clubs and entertainment

Where do you start? The famousBigg Market and Quayside arebursting with pubs, clubs and bars,while a variety of trendy venueshave sprung up on the doorstepof Central Station.

For everything under one roof;including a 12-screen cinema, bars,restaurants, a casino and clubs,head to The Gate - a £75millioncity-centre entertainment venue.

A short metro ride away is the livelyOsborne Road in Jesmond with agood choice of bars and restaurants,and lots of student life.

Eating out

All tastes and budgets are cateredfor at the city’s hundreds ofrestaurants and cafés with Spanish,Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Frenchand Indian to name a few. For anauthentic Chinese meal headfor Newcastle’s own Chinatown,you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Theatre

In addition to showcaseperformances at our PerformanceAcademy, there are three majortheatres in Newcastle – the TheatreRoyal, the Tyne Theatre and theNorthern Stage, along with themore intimate Live Theatre. All playhost to touring plays and local actsand have great relationships withour own Performance Academy.

First-class culture

Stroll across the award-winningMillennium Bridge and explore theBALTIC Centre for ContemporaryArt and The Sage Gateshead -an international home for musicaldiscovery and more concerts.

Take a trip out of the city towardthe coast and you’ll find Tynemouthand Whitley Bay. Our ‘2+2’ pledge

If you are a Level 3 studentcurrently studying at NewcastleCollege and you successfullycomplete a two-year course,such as A Levels or a BTEC NationalDiploma, we will offer you a placeon an appropriate FoundationDegree subject to a satisfactoryinterview or course audition.

Foundation Degrees

These two-year qualificationsinitiated by the government aremore career-focussed thantraditional degree courses.

Normally studied after A Levelsor National Diplomas, they havebeen developed with employersand industry professionals to meetthe country’s need for a trained,knowledgeable workforce.

Equivalent to the first two yearsof an Honours Degree, there arelots of reasons why studying aFoundation Degree will benefityou. Here are the five main ones:

1. They’re exactly the qualificationsthat employers want.

2. They have agreed progressionroutes to Honours Degrees.

3. You’ll receive first-rate support.4. They provide the right mix of

academic skills and practicalexperience.

5. They’re exciting and relevantto the world of work.

Honours Degrees

Foundation Degrees have an agreedprogression route onto the final yearof an Honours Degree course

(also known as Bachelor Degree)with us or at one of our partneruniversities (subject to interviewand a relevant two or three-monthbridging course in some cases).

Honours Degrees come under fourtitles: BA - Bachelor of Arts, BSc -Bachelor of Science, BEd - Bachelorof Education, and BEng - Bachelorof Engineering.

Certificate of Higher Education

Studied for one year, thesecertificates are equal to the firstyear of an Honours Degree.

Postgraduate

These courses are for graduatesand usually involve one or twoyears’ additional work after anHonours Degree and lead toa Masters Degree.

We don’t believe in huge,anonymous classes. Instead,we favour plenty of individualattention and lots of one-to-onesupport. Most of our teachingtakes place in small, informalgroups. You’ll also meet yourpersonal tutor on a regular basis.They’ll give you feedback on yourwork and help you to solve anyproblems you might experience.

In addition, we have a range of extrasupport services to help you if youneed it, all of the highest standard!Our extra support services include:

We can give you advice onbudgeting, making the most outof your money, and where to go tofor other sources of help. Pages 30to 33 describe loans, bursaries and

Whether you want to continuestudying or get a job when yourcourse finishes, we can help yousort out your future. Connexionspersonal advisers are based at ourmain Rye Hill Campus. They’retrained in careers guidance andcan give you impartial advice.

If you are over 19 years old, NewPathways Tyne and Wear advisersprovide an information andguidance service to adults who wantto improve their skills, undertakelearning, look for work or improvetheir career prospects. We alsoprovide plenty of information onfurther study, job vacancies andgraduate start-up programmes.

Support with personal issues

If you have a problem which isaffecting your learning we can referyou to a range of specialist agenciesthat can support you, dependingon the nature of your problem.

Childcare

If you have children aged 0-4years old, our day nursery providesa friendly environment. It isconveniently located on ourRye Hill Campus. Our staff are wellqualified and regularly attend furthertraining courses. The nursery is wellequipped and in a recent Ofstedinspection was graded good inhelping children achieve well andenjoy what they do. Helping childrenmake a positive contribution wasgraded as outstanding.

Newcastle College, RNIB and LSCpartnership

The aim of this partnership project,with The Royal National Institute ofBlind People (RNIB), is to provideblind or partially sighted learnerswith the best possible learningexperience, whatever course ischosen. The base is beingdeveloped as an information centrefor the north east region with theaim of ensuring that blind orpartially sighted people are able togain the skills and qualificationsthey need to progress in life.

The team includes NewcastleCollege specialist support staff anda partnership co-ordinatoremployed by the RNIB. It also hasinput from other RNIB advisersincluding regional educationtraining and assistive technologyofficers. This team can providespecialist technical assessments,staff training, advice and guidance.

Route A and Route B options

What does the course cover?This course takes a three-way approach. First comes real work;through freelance, placement, live briefs and client-based projects.

Secondly, learners are asked to reflect on industry experience,develop personal and professional skills and become critically awareof the requirements of the industry and their personal readiness tofulfil those requirements. Finally, all students complete adissertation, under the tutorship and mentoring of expert staff.

Learning and assessment methodsLearning methods are a combination of formal lectures, supervisedpractical sessions, group and individual work. There will beopportunities for work placement within the industry and businessstart-up. There are two key assessment points during the year, thefirst in January/February and the second is towards the end of thesecond semester in May/June.

What career or further study opportunities are available?We believe that students completing this one-year programme willhave the skills and be equipped to work in a range of roles withinthe events industry. The course is designed to encourage andenterprise-minded approach, so self-employment and freelancework are realistic for graduates. This course aims to develop your culinary, patisserie andmanagement skills and ultimately enable you to gainemployment in the field of senior kitchen management. You’llhave the opportunity to undertake work placements within thehospitality industry and some of the modules will be deliveredduring work-based practice.

What does the course cover?The course is challenging, interesting, varied,career-oriented, hard work and very enjoyable. The course covers;study skills development, food design and advanced skills (culinary,patisserie and bakery), work-based learning, professionaldevelopment, food hygiene, health and safety, nutrition, menudevelopment principles, human resource management, financialmanagement, catering technology, gastronomy, food and societyand marketing management.
