PURPOSE• The main purpose of Sense 8 is to entertain however it also

educates as it centers around current affairs and problems people have to face. It makes the audience feel attached to the ‘sensates’ and feel for the relationships and situations the characters get in to.

FORM & STYLE• Each episode runs from 46 – 60 minutes.

• It’s a fast paced drama, jumping from character to character.

• As it’s shot in 8 different countries. Each scene is stylized according to the country/city the scene is taking place in. This is done to create the sense of the character and where they are from and also so that there is no confusion to the audience, as they know exactly where they are at this point as the show involves lots of jumping between countries and characters.

CONTENT• It’s about 8 strangers living in different parts of the world, who

have the same vision and then find themselves connected with each others thoughts and actions. Throughout the show they try to search for answers while helping each other out in problems that arise in their life. As they hunt for answers, an organization hunts them down, intent on destroying them.

• The ‘sensates’ - Jamie Clayton plays a trans woman Naomi from San Francisco, Tina Desai plays Kala from Mumbai, Tuppence Middleton plays Riley born in Iceland but living in London, Max Riemelt plays Wolfgang a locksmith from berlin, Miguel Ángel Silvestre plays Lito an actor from Mexico, Brian J. Smith plays Will a police officer from Chicago, Aml Ameen plays a bus driver from Nairobi, Doona Bae plays Sun from Seoul,

MEANING

• Their aim was to explore subjects that its writers feel science fiction shows tend to ignore or skip past like gender, sexuality, politics, identity and religion.

• It’s a sci-fi but set in present times in major cities we are all aware of.

• The issues discussed are all issues we are aware of, like gang crimes in Nairobi, and the struggles of being transgender or a gay actor in Mexico.

GENRE• Sci-fi drama – As all though it is set in the present and on

earth in countries like America, Germany, India etc that we all know of, the storyline consists of people being connected mentally and telepathically which makes it science fiction.

• The issues and the situations the characters deal with show a dramatic element making it a drama.

TARGET AUDIENCE

• As the entire series is released at the same time on Netflix, it is targeting the netflix subscribers or targeting to attract people to subscribe to Netflix. This would be an age group of 14-30.

• A family might subscribe to Netflix and have separate accounts for the kids and the parents.

• The complex issues and strong language, violence and sexual acts makes it an 18 rated show.

FREQUENCY

• A netflix original and the whole season was released on Netflix on the 5th of June 2015.

• It’s been renewed for season 2 set to be released in June 2016.

• It’s a serial narrative, so you need to watch the episodes in order, as the storyline gets resolved throughout the season.

PRODUCTION PROCESS• Sense 8 was made as a Netflix original. As it’s not screened on a

television channel it has more leeway to explore topics that tv channels would restrict.

• As there are many locations used in this show, the 4 directorial duties of the 4 directors are divided by location, rather than episode.

• This means every script is finalised before production begins.• Filming took place in 9 different locations, Chicago, San

Francisco, London, Reykjavik, Mexico, Nairobi, Seol, Mumbai, Berlin Actors and crew members were hired from the respective location to keep a realistic atmosphere.

• A single scene would be filmed over weeks/months, in different parts of the world, with different directors/DOP/crew, then brought together in the editing process.

• Scenes were often shot in front of a real crowd.
