The couple work in television, and have

picked up a ew tricks or inventing great

environments along the way. They also

    shared an awesome puppet-making project

with us, and their un and playul creativity

A cool credenzacarved rom a single

piece o limestoneplus a warm stove

make the ront rooma great place to

    hang out in the all.

the silver lining o building almost rom scratch is

that every inch o the house is imprinted with their

    bright and extroverted personalities.

Todd is an actor and puppeteer; Caitlin is a pup-peteer and puppet builder. They met on a YTV

show called Big and Small, were riends or years

and then kept separate places in the Annex. We

really liked our old places, says Caitlin. My

apartment was bright, light and airy, while Todds

was parlour-like with deep, rich tones and beauti-

    ul old wood mouldings.

W e love houseswith character, and somethingbuilt out o love, experience and time. Todd andCaitlin bought their east-end home six years ago;it had been a rooming house and was charitably

described as needing a lot o work.

We thought some things would be salvageable,

says Caitlin, sitting with son Emmett, three, in

their sunny living room. We didnt expect a total

gut job. Renovating has been a long process, but

It turns out that Todd and Caitlin had

    no trouble marrying their design

ideas. They decided that a ormer din-

ing room was the coziest space in the house and

turned it into a living room. They tore out cheap

parquet oors and covered the suboor with ber-

ber carpeting. Woven-grass-mat wallpaper wrapsthe walls, and sophisticated leather and teak bal-

ance rough-hewn pieces like the mantel. And they

used this neutral palette throughout the house.

The natural hues and materials mix together art-

ully to create an eclectic eect, but the space is

used cleverly too. Above the mantel, decorated

barn wood doors disguise the TV set. Were lm

and media people, says Caitlin, but we dont want

to live with it 24 hours a day.

Another benet o a complete redo is being able to

make the rooms ow more efciently. Ater carry-

ing out 14 tons o debris, they were able to betterimagine how to open up the rooms. Were pret-

ty handy, says Caitlin. Todd is a carpenter and

learned everything rom his dad. We built a lot o

houses together, but this was the rst time I got to

call the shots, he says. It was Todds idea to try

the rounded wall (in the opposite photo) and it was

up to his dad to nd the best way to do it.

Ned the cat relaxesby the freplace.

My avourite thingin the house is the

mantel, says Caitlin.I we move Im

    taking it with me.

The kitchen was the last room that

the couple renovated on the main

oor. It was a unny little room with a chimney

and a staircase that led to the second oor, so

some time was needed to gure out exactly how

to make it over. The process was also compli-

cated by the act that an eight-month-long job

came along, and Todd and Caitlin had no time tocomplete the task. (We were washing dishes in

    the bathtub, she recalls.)

We knew the kitchen was built as an extension to

the original house, says Todd, so the day we took

possession Cait picked up a sledgehammer and

smashed away to expose the brick. Understanding

the newly revealed exoskeleton led to a middle-o-

the-night realization that they could switch the place-

ment o the back door with a window to let in more

light and allow or unbroken counter space. They

let exposed brick where they could and installed

    rich-looking but inexpensive wood countertops.

The entrance to the ormer staircase to the upstairswas made into built-in shelving, complete with a

wine rack. Caitlins dad is a wine connoisseur and

initially chided us on the height o the wine rack and

how much light it would get rom the window across

rom it, but ater a moments reection he withdrew

with Hell, you kids wont let a bottle hang around

long enough to go o, anyhow.

    WE TRIED TOINCORPORATEAS MANY FOUND

    ELEMENTSAS NEMATERIALS

    the space

Todd and Caitlin did the majority othe renovation beore the arrival

o their son, Emmett, but his inuence has had

a huge impact on the look o their house. For

example, the dining room table has been moved

to one side to make room or a beanbag chair.

And Caitlins ormer studio became a kids room.

Creating a kid-riendly space was not stressul.

We were still trying to gure out who he is, she

says, so in no way was it a stretch to bring in

pieces we already had and evolve with them.

Part o that evolution will involve Emmetts

emigration rom crib to big-boy bed. An amazing

upcycled daybedcurrently used as a couch

awaits that milestone. The daybed is the best,

says Caitlin. The legs are made rom banisters

rom the old King Eddy hotel. The two-by-ours

    were salvaged rom the house.

Another reason the couple nd it so easy to

ow between child and adult space is that they

are kids at heart themselves. Everything in the

house reects a part o our lives. We love bring-

ing in all the puppet and kid stu, but we take

an adult approach to thinking about how it all

    comes together.

Having a sense o humour iscrucial when one is trying to

outt a home on a budget.

Years o working on sets o TV shows and con-

structing puppets have helped them reimagine

    rooms as well as urnishings.

In the bathroom, Caitlin has repurposed shoe

stretchers or use as jewellery holders. A sense oplay is also apparent in the toilet humour depart-

ment. Todd loves that the Big Brother Is Watching

You prints eyes ollow bathroom visitors. Its a

wonderully cruel thing to hang above a toilet.

Back on the main loor is evidence that Todd

and Caitlin really love objects with history and a

story behind them. One o the rst things you seewhen entering the house is a big old antique seed

counter rom a general store. Caitlin discovered

it on Craigslist and ell in love. She was working

on a show at the time, so Todd said hed call to

inquire about its availability. To surprise her, he

told her that it was already sold.

For two weeks Caitlin was lamenting this terribleloss, says Todd. She even had space on the

oor taped o or it. Then, once the drywalling

in the ront room was nished, he sneaked the

counter into the house. Caitlin still loves it. Its

100 years old and the cloves drawer still smells

like cloves, she says. Its housing kids movies

    and cowboy boots now.

Luck also plays a role in creating

a happy home. A lot o the art

and objects in Todd and Caitlins

bedroom are ortuitous nds. A drawing o peas

in a spoon was an advertisement they ound in

Japan. The painting over the bed was a piece o

street grafti they discovered in Montreal.

Wed allen in love with two pieces the artist had

nailed to an old ence that we passed on our way

to work. One day I noticed that someone had

appropriated one o them, and earing that the

same would happen to the second I pulled over

and, acting like an annoyed city worker, ripped

it o the wall and sped away, he conesses. He

later went to an art show by the same artist and

bought some pieces to realign the art karma.

Still, many o the best things in the bedroom are

the couples own inventions. The dressers are

straight-up Ikea, but Todd added new tops to them.

Hacking Ikea stu can work so well, says Todd.

Anyone can mix it up with even just paint.

And then theres a large and prominently placed

Godzilla on the nightstand. He was Todds teddy

bear when he was a kid, says Caitlin. When they

moved in together, she suggested that they give

the lizard pride o place in their room. Todd says

thats when he knew hed ound the right girl.

I they are not on set, Todd and Caitlin

work rom home. When Emmett was

born, Caitlin moved her studio into the

basement (which unortunately we didnt shoot

as it was getting dark). Todds ofce was the very

last room to get redone, as they used it as a wood

    shop during the renovations.

Like the rest o the house, it had to be completely

redone, but this room had the added challenge

o being completely crooked. To solve one prob-

lem, a coered ceiling was installed. And letover

grass-mat wallpaper helps unite the downstairs

    palette with the upper rooms.

The studio also provides storage space or Todds

toys. He has a collection o gures rom classic

TV shows and movies like Ghostbusters, Buckaroo

Banzaiand The Six Million Dollar Manthe very

things that made him want to make lms and that

still inspire his work. He also wanted to showcase

    his sculpture over the years.

What makes this lovely little house Todd, Caitlin

and Emmetts dream home? The renovations

took time but also allowed them the chance to

understand how the space worked and let them

imagine the many ways to create a un and wel-

    coming home.

    4. 6.

INSTRUCTIONS1. Use the bamboo skewer to pierce a hole

almost all the way through one Styrofoam

ball. This will be the head portion of the

puppet. Keeping the skewer in the ball, use

the utility knife to slice the ball completely

in half. This will keep the holes in line.

    2. Cut o the sharp end of the bamboo skewer

and use some of the spray adhesive to attach

it to one side of the Styrofoam ball. This will

be the top half of the puppet.

    3. Use the circumference of the sliced Styrofoam

ball as a circle template and cut 2 circles

out of the black craft foam. Use the holepunch to match where the holes were in the

Styrofoam. Attach to each side of the sliced

ball. This will be the mouth of the puppet.

    4. If you are using a bendy straw, cut o that

portion. Insert the straw through the other

half of the ball, ush with the mouth palate.

This will be the lower half of the puppets jaw.

Use masking tape to attach the ball to the

straw. Put the two sides of the ball back

together and you have your puppets head.

    5. Poke the second Styrofoam ball through the

straw/skewer to create the puppets body.

Firmly tape the body to the straw.

    6. Time to sculpt. Keeping the mouth closed,

spray the whole puppet with a light layer of

adhesive. This will help the Model Magic

adhere. Start sculpting by applying a thin layer

over the top half of the Styrofoam ball and

forming ears. Continue by applying a thinlayer to the bottom half of the ball that forms

the lower part of his jaw. Next, form the body

by covering the second Styrofoam ball with the

sculpting material, and add arms and legs.

Once the Model Magic has hardened (about

72 hours), paint and attach eyes with the pins,

and you have your very own talking monster!
