Curriculum for Excellence

In Scotland we have four strands of the curriculum for excellence and we strive to be:

Successful learners.Confident individuals.Effective contributors.Responsible citizens.

Responsible citizens.

As responsible citizens we are aware of the importance of being citizens of the world.

Scotland and it’s place in the world.

As responsible citizens we are aware of Scotland and it’s place in the world.

The Roman god Janus

Our month January is called after the Roman god Janus. He has two faces – one looking forward and one looking backwards.

The Romans in Scotland…

The Romans lived in Scotland 2000 years ago. They built a wall to keep the Picts ( the painted people) out. Parts of the wall can be seen in Bishopbriggs and Kirkintilloch. One theory is that there was a Roman encampment in Springburn, it is said that the seven hills of Springburn reminded the Romans of Rome – their capital city and its seven hills.

2009 A special year for Scotland.

2009 is the Year of Homecoming and we will be hearing a lot about it on the television and on the news.

Why is 2009 so special?

Robert Burns

Robert Burns was born 250 years ago and is Scotland’s National Bard. His birthday on the 25th January and it is celebrated all round the world wherever Scots may meet. Although he lived over two hundred years ago his poems and songs are still performed all over the world this day.

Songs and poems of Robert Burns.

Up in the morning.

Up in the morning’s no for me

Up in the morning early

When all the hills are covered wi’ snaw

I’m sure its winter fairly.

Scotland at the time of Burns….

Moving away….

The building at the end of Abbey Lane in Edinburgh is the Palace of Holyrood home of Queen Victoria and the houses are where those of her subjects lived in the 1840’s and 1850’s. Many people moved away to start new lives in other parts of Edinburgh, parts of Scotland and other parts of the world.

New life elsewhere…….

Songs and poems of Robert Burns.

The Selkirk GraceSome hae meat and

cannot eat.Some cannot eat

that want it:But we hae meat

and we can eat, Sae let the Lord be

thankit.

Successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens …

Songs and poems of Robert Burns.

Ye banks and braes o bonnie Doon,

How can ye bloom sae fresh and fair?

How can ye chant, ye little birds,

And I sae weary fu o care!

Thou’ll break my heart, thou warbling bird, That wantons thro the flowering thorn!

Thou minds me o departed joys,

Departed never to return.

Getting “home”.

Did you get the clues?

The Romans called Scotland Caledonia. Those who moved away still told the

old stories and sang the old songs. Those who moved proved the points

that needed proving. Some know what they will do tomorrow

being a part of the year of homecoming. – They will be coming “home” to Scotland.

Caledonia

Let me tell you that I love you and I think about you all the time

Caledonia, you’re calling me and now I’m going home

For if I should become a stranger you know that it would make me more than sad

Caledonia’s been everything I’ve ever had.

Scotland’s legacy to the world

Scotland has a population of about 5 million people.

It is thought that around 40 million people in the world can claim that their ancestors came from Scotland.

Caledonia

Let me tell you that I love you and I think about you all the time

Caledonia, you’re calling me and now I’m going home

For if I should become a stranger you know that it would make me more than sad

Caledonia’s been everything I’ve ever had.
