ED ITOR IALIf last month was Shanti Peetham, this month was the day of Swami Ramdev. In the Guru Gaurava Samarambha he hypnotized the audience with his practical session and hour-long speech emphasizing on the Yama and Niyama on one hand and efficiency in all actions. He inspired the students of Prashanti to resolve to memorize Gita, Patanjala Yoga Sutra, etc. and announced prizes for those who could completely memorize the whole texts. This surely is the needed link in our education system.

Sri V Nagaraj lauded the great achievements of Swamiji in popularizing Swadesi products and the big sweep made even in abroad. Justice Rama Jois was very happy to see large number of students come to trod the path of Dharma through Yoga and appreciated the achievements of S-VYASA during last three or more decades.

The NMB Abhiyan has completed screening of 2.5 Lakhs of people and blood tests for nearly 50,000 people. Yoga camps have started in 60 districts across all the states. The delay in the project due to elections is resolved and the project is as scheduled.

Bhakti Yoga is a science to gain mastery over emotions. If the person has faith in God it is fine, but is not a mandate one may not have a faith in any god but still can be a great bhakta. This is most essential in modern society in absence of emotional training at schools / colleges. Thus students are stressed and suffer from emotional imbalances and are in to depression, to overcome this Bhakti Yoga should be included in the curriculum.

The following schematic summarizes the essential components of the Science of Emotions. The first step is to analyse and recognizing our strengths and weaknesses called as Daivi (virtues) and Asuri (vices) Sampats, One must develop strengths – Virtues and reduce weaknesses - the six enemies kama, krodha, lobha, moha, mada and matsarya. As they bind us enslave us leading to suffering, misery and bondage. The virtues (selflessness, sharing and giving, peace and poise, love and magnanimity,

positive thinking etc) elevate us by freeing us from the bondage of emotions. Hence one should set habits of giving and giving.

The proverbial saying ‘a friend in need is the friend indeed’ becomes a reality in our behavior. The society will become an ideal one. Swami Vivekananda has said that the twin ideal of India is Tyaga and Seva., which will help us to move up in the ladder of growth, to give up ego is the most difficult. Swami Vivekananda gave us the secret ‘Surrender is expansion’; by this we can easily give up our arrogance and gain self confidence. Surrender is a process of resonance of our mind and emotions with great virtuous beings that we revere the most. Bhakta of a god may develop all the grand qualities of Ishta devata: a hanuman Bhakta may develop great strength and will power, devotee of Goddess Saraswati may gain great intelligence and wisdom, worshipper of Lakshmi may become a billionaire, etc.

The culmination of devotion or Bhakti is Sakshatkara – Realisation of Truth, God Realization in form as Kali Sakshatkara of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and later the Nirguna Sakshatkar of formless all pervasive blissful silence and peace as Truth. The end of Bhakti Yoga is freedom from cycles of birth and deaths called Moksha.

Meaning: The Lord (cannot be the efficient or the operative cause of the world)on account of the inconsistency (of that doctrine)

As it is known, in this traditional scriptural structure, in the beginning one comes across the Vedas, Rik, Yajus and Sama. Mantras from Rg Veda are set in different Chandas, Yajurveda is in prose and poem form and Sama Veda is mostly in the musical or singing mode. Atharva Veda Mantras are set in all three forms. At the second level of scriptures, the knowledge is passed on to the future generations in the form of Sutras and Karikas. These two types of scriptures are followed by Bhashya, Vartika, Vritti and Tika etc. as various forms of literature. Then came Vada granthas (texts in debating style), Prakarana Granthas (introductory notes) followed by Gadya (prose), Padya (poetry) and Nataka (Drama). In general, all these deal with four Purusharthas, namely Artha-Kama and Dharma-Moksha. In this context Brahma Sutras are unique presented in 555 Sutras by Veda Vyasa; Shruti (scriptural authority), Yukti (logical analysis) and Anubhuti (experiential experimentation) are the source of knowledge.

Maharshi Veda Vyasa Badarayana after refuting many theories such as Sankhya, Bauddha, Viasheshika etc. takes up Shiva Tantra Agama

schools / theories for refutation. In this process, great masters such as Panchacarya Parampara, Aradhyas, Renukacharyas and others in the later stages of development, turned to Hatha Yoga Tantric method of practices including Goraksha Natha and Swatmarama. All these texts started projecting Shiva to be Sarvajna, Sarvashakta. According to these texts Ishwara is capable to create, maintain and destroy with unlimited powers. Ishwara is beyond Prakriti and Purusha and does not depend on anything.

Shaivagamas have two schools; Ishwara Vada and Brahma Vada. Adya Shankara projects the second which considers Brahma does everything with the help of Maya. The second one is projected by Agamikas; Ishwara is great pot maker. For this theory the world is not just a pot and it is divine pot, hence the lord Ishwara is divine pot maker. The Lord is cause for everything. But Veda Vyasa Badarayana counters this theory also to be ultimately true. There are some inbuilt limitations and drawbacks in Shaivagamas when they claim, ‘Shiva does everything’.

Yoga should become Peoples’ Life StyleYogrishi Swami Baba Ramdev Ji Maharaj

‘Several programs have been designed by a number of Indian Yoga organizations to make our country free from diseases and narcotic drugs. Hence teachers would be trained and employed in every city and village of India’ said Yogrishi Swami Baba Ramdev Ji Maharaj while receiving Gurugauravasamarpanam and also inaugurating fountain called Vivekadhara organized by S-VYASA Yoga University, Jigani, Anekal Taluk, Bangalore on Thursday 20-04-2017.

Swamiji said that Yoga should be imparted to children from the very young age and it should become their life style and even children of nine years can also learn Yoga. Yogrishi Swami Baba Ramdev Ji Maharaj further said that Yoga would become a powerful means for promoting Indian culture and tradition. Yoga should not

be taught very seriously. It should be imparted with humor and analogies which would appeal to people of all ages.

Justice Dr. M Rama Jois Ji, former MP of Rajya Sabha, former Governor of Uttarakhand, former Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court in his presidential remarks said that Swami Ramdev ji’s Yoga methods, his books and health products are popular in the USA. He called upon the youth to imbibe the moral values and especially dharma in their lives.

Dr. H R Nagendra Ji, Chancellor in his welcome address said that S-VYASA Yoga University is popularizing four streams of Yoga, the practice

of which would calm down body and mind and release of stress. The Chancellor said that S-VYASA University is the only University in the entire world engaged in promoting Yoga academically and through R and D, training,

awareness and extending medical assistance to people of all sections of society and for all ages, irrespective of race or national barriers. Dr. H R Nagendra Ji said that ‘Anvesana’ a State –of- the –art Science Lab at S-VYASA has done pioneer research in this regard.

invokes the pot-makership, the Lord Ishwara also merge with psychic rotation of the world though he got unlimited power, and becomes Paradhina (dependent). Worldly affairs and communications make him just a manager. Ishwara manages the world and may lose the power of omniscient, omnipresent. Ishwara may become crisis manager, in this wheel of world he may become a normal human like any other common person. So, Badarayana says that by accepting this theory of Shaivagamas we may underestimate the real power of the Lord Ishwara and denigrate his powers. Thus, Brahma should be projected above all these worldly affairs. With limited power and knowledge, Ishwara

may succumb to worldly common man.

In order to go beyond these entire limited theories one must accept Brahma Vada, not Ishwara Vada. Scriptures also do not approve Ishwara Vada idea though it seems very much logical. In this context one should decide to accept either of these; reality to be cause of creation, sustenance and destruction in the form of Iswara or Sat-Chit-Ananda Brahma! To avoid this logger-head between these two theories and logical exercises, one must ensure to accept Brahma Vada which is the essence of all the Upanishads.

Arogyadhama Success StoryImproved Case of Section - A (Neurology & Oncology)

His condition was poignant. Unable to stand, barely able to talk and faced with involuntary bowel and bladder functions he was perhaps not even aware that he had been brought to Arogyadhama as he had lost his sense of orientation as well. He was stricken with a nerve disease and perhaps partially paralysed as the function of muscles to perform a given task was diminished. But he was responding to verbal commands. The young man, Bharat (name changed), was just 35. He was reduced to this condition following a head injury in a road accident a month earlier and was diagnosed with cerebrovascular accident.

The patient underwent a right ventricle peritoneal (VP) shunt for post-traumatic hydrocephalus (PTH) which is a frequent and a serious complication that follows a traumatic head injury.

A known smoker he reported he had a poor appetite. During his 11-week treatment he underwent yoga practices based on Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy. We prepared a special yoga module for his neurological ailments based on our research into yoga therapy. Simultaneously he was given

treatment in Ayurveda, naturopathy and acupuncture and given physiotherapy as well. There were counselling sessions to sublimate his inner emotions and control his stress levels. He was given biweekly cleansing procedures (kriyas) to cleanse his system completely.

Beginning with pranayama and meditation at 5.30 am his schedule of various treatment procedures continued till 7:30 pm. The treatment included special techniques designed to heal his ailment (asanas, loosening exercises, relaxation techniques, pranayama, counselling,

cyclic meditation, trataka, mind sound resonance technic (MSRT) and pranic energisation technic (PET). His parameters like Blood Pressure, Respiratory Rate, pulse rate etc were monitored daily to track his progress.

Parameters: Within two weeks of his stay with us in Arogyadhama there was considerable improvement in his unsteady gait, sensory function and other activities of daily life. After three weeks he started developing mood swings and emotional outbursts which continued for around

two weeks came under control by holistic counselling sessions. By the end of the second month, there was a lot of improvement in his complaints related to speech, gait, orientation, bowel and bladder functions. He was discharged at the end of 2.75 months by which time his recovery was 80% complete on all counts and remarkable improvement in his cognitive and mental functions as well.

There is an ultimate crisis that all of us have to go through; as the famous American writer Mark Twain said, there are only two things certain in life: death and taxes. Both will haunt us if we are not true to ourselves; as the father says to his son in the lines of the famous play, Hamlet: “Above all, my son, be true to yourself; for it follows, as night the day, ye shall be true to all men”.

Some diseases have the opportunity to give a glimpse of the other side (of life), especially to people who are receptive in opening one’s own consciousness. Alzheimer’s is one such; there is sometimes profound memory, confusion (so it seems) of time and space; all these are due to our limited adjuncts. We have shrouded Reality with our own limited senses. We see the fleeting time and along with it, disappearance of our favorite scenes, people and even our pet dog. Change is permanent; and we merely observe the scene while the screen is out of focus.

Dr. Elmer Green and his wife, Alyce Green formed a wonderful team of clinical psychologists who tried to understand siddis of Yogis so that some of the diseases could be controlled through mind-

body methods. They travelled extensively in India in 1974 with a portable EEG lab that Elmer designed and built, traversing the length and breadth of the country with the intent of wiring Yogis with special powers in controlling their p h y s i o l o g i c a l

variables that are supposed to be autonomic. They could find a few Yogis who were willing to undergo tests in the make shift laboratory of the van. Swami Rama was one of them and he was invited by Dr. Green to visit their full-fledged lab in Kansas, USA. Swami Rama obliged the Greens; he could demonstrate his heart beats stopping and going into a flutter; raise and lower skin temperature of the hand several degrees and move objects without any physical contact with them.

All the above experiments led Dr. Green to believe that the autonomic nervous system is after all not very autonomous; perhaps, they argued, just as Yogis, we could also change the physiological parameters if we are aware of them. Thus, biofeedback procedures were introduced; we could change a physiological variable (through an instrument), by having a knowledge of it and by mere thinking! If one wants to change the heart rate or hand temperature, the person gets to be aware of his parameter through a heart rate monitor or a temperature monitor; and through proper thinking, he could change the outcome as measured by the instrument.

This instrumental Yoga is still quite different from a samyama-based physiological control. In the former, the person cannot change his outcome without the instrument, at least not at the start. However, once one is aware of the inner workings of the body-mind, the next step is to understand the role of consciousness in health and disease. This is important since search for seeking the Truth is after all the ultimate frontier of human endeavor. Reverting back, biofeedback

is in use for many psychosomatic conditions and one could say it opened the doors for Mind-Body medicine to be introduced in clinics.

Dr. Green then went on to measure the electrical correlates of healing. Specifically, there is an ancient Buddhist text that gives a glimpse of training methods of novice priests by advanced Yogis. The novice is made to sit on a glass cube (an excellent electrical insulator) and a finely polished copper plate is hung in front of the novice and the novice is made to look at the image in the copper plate. In deep meditation (with eyes open), one’s image disappears providing a feedback to the novice the level of meditation he/she has achieved. Dr. Elmer Green presumed that there should be an induced electrical potential on the copper sheet and he started measuring this field. Thus, the copper plate is not only a visual reflector; it is a reflector of electrical charge generated at the body surface of a person going through any mind-body procedure. He did this at his laboratory using high sensitive devices that measure electric charge (see figure 1). This is still a very unique and interesting way to determine the amount of electric charge when a person intends to heal another, the charge seemingly accumulating at the surface of the body. He could measure up to 110 volts equivalent in some healers indicating an unusual charge distribution on the body surface. The copper wall acts as a ‘charge mirror’ and perhaps this is being monitored by both the novice and the guru in ancient Buddhist monasteries [1, 2].

A recent note in the internet says: “Elmer E. Green (October 10, 1917 to March 5, 2017) devoted his life to the idea that people can develop voluntary control over internal physiologic functions that are normally involuntary, and to research and teaching about states of consciousness and spiritual development. He was one of the scientists who invented biofeedback and began research of it, working alongside his wife and colleague, Alyce”.

In a condition known as A l z h e i m e r ’ s disorder, the person slowly loses the current reality as projected by his/her senses; he/she moves into what seems to be another, perhaps more sustaining reality. However, most patients are not able to bridge the two states and are not able to connect the two seamlessly. However, Alyce Green, Elmer’s long time associate and wife was able to bridge these two realities. She was able to glide in and out of the two; she was able to narrate ‘the other side’ as it were. Elmer made extensive notes of the experiences shared by Alyce when she came back to current reality. This resulted in a massive book, The Ozawkie Book of the Dead: Alzheimer's Isn't What You Think It Is (3 Volumes) published in 2001 [3]. He thought that this crisis had given Alyce the ability to enter the realm of bardo [4] as she was highly spiritual and was able to receive the teachings from another realm. “The book also presents his synthesis, distilled over a lifetime, of spiritual teachings, Eastern and Western, ancient and modern. He focuses in particular on the nature of the self, the soul, and the spirit, and the process of human spiritual development”.

Can we achieve this expansion of consciousness in the final crisis that we all will be going through? Yes, says the author who himself crossed over to the other realm recently. Deep meditation focuses our awareness and ability to see the flip side of the life processes we are aware of now. Most people in India who read Bhagavad Gita know about anitya (impermanence) of all things we deal with; however, to implement such thinking in a crisis is not easy. Meditation,

Background

Mudras signify a gesture with hands, eyes and the body. Different configurations of the joining finger tips are also termed mudras and are used by yoga practitioners for energy manipulation and for therapeutic applications. Electro Photonic Imaging (EPI) captures the coronal discharge around the fingers as a result of electron capture from the ten fingers. The coronal discharge around each fingertip is studied to understand the effect of mudra on EPI parameters.

Introduction

A mudra can be perceived as a hand posture with a specific pattern of finger configuration. Using modifiers, complex mudras could be constructed from relatively simple mudras [1].

Mudra means seal or a lock in Sanskrit. Positions of the body (and even the entire body) that have influence on the subtle energy in the body, mostly the fingers of the hand could constitute mudra.

Yogis use mudra for channelizing energy from the base of the spine (mooladhara) to top of the

head (sahasrara). This physical based sadhana called hatha yoga is a well-known type of yoga. Kriya yoga uses visualization, gesture and ritual worship. Laya yoga explains how the concentrated mind can lead to forgetting the materialistic world and enjoy the Samadhi state. A mudra is a physical equivalent/representation of

a mantra. In hatha yoga, mudra is used for connecting two points of energy in our body.

According to custom mudras are typically used during meditation and pranayama as a way to direct energy flow throughout the body. In yoga philosophy, different areas of the hand stimulate specific areas of the brain. By applying light pressure to these areas of the hand, we could ‘activate’ corresponding region of the brain, similar to reflexology. Mudras also symbolize various feelings, emotions and representatives of various states of being[2].

Hatha Yoga Pradipika deals with bandhas and mudras together and ancient tantric texts also make no distinction between the two. Bandhas are extensively incorporated in mudra as well as in pranayama techniques. Their locking action, however, reveals them

as a fundamentally important group of practices in their own right[3].

Any living body is made of five distinct elements: fire, wind, aether, earth, and water. Several ancient health systems are based on the concept of the balance of the five elements. According to Ayurveda, distortion or impairment of the 5 elements creates outer disturbance and inner sickness in the body. The 5 fingers of the hands represent these 5 elements : the thumb symbolizes fire, the forefinger symbolizes wind, the middle finger aether, the ring finger earth, and the little or small finger symbolizes water[4].

meditation [5]; it is also used to distinguish diabetic subjects from non-diabetic subjects[6].This paper discusses the use of EPI device shown in Figure 2 for analyzing Prana Mudra practice.

Classification of Mudras

Mudras can be classified based on the use of fingers, mind and the body. Hasta Mudras use the fingers to manage the five elements, Mana mudras use the eyes, ears lips nose and tongue for concentration and focus, Kaya mudras use the whole body. The other variant of mudra is the bandha mudra to arrest or limit the flow of prana in a specific region. These are generally used along with corresponding Asana and Pranayama.

As stated above the five fingers represent five elements and they can be increased decreased or balanced. Similarly the pancha pranas can also be manipulated. Touching the finger tips balances the elements. Folding the fingers and pressing it with the thumb decreases the corresponding elements. Figure 1 shows Prana Mudra placing the thumb on the folded ring and little fingers.

Method

The participants were from Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthanam (SVYASA) and Sushrutha Ayurveda Medical College both in Bangalore, India. There were 29 volunteers in the mudra group and 32 in the control group. There were two designs: one was a pre-post design with control the other was pre-post with repeated measures with 18 subjects

practicing Mudra for 3 consecutive days. The duration of intervention for the pre-post design was 10 minutes on the first day, 15 minutes on the second day and 20 minutes on the third day. A neural network classifier was used for classifying Mudra and Control samples.[7]

Mudra group practised Prana mudra in the same sitting posture and for the same duration. The control group also followed the same procedure, except for not practicing the Prana mudra, they sat quietly, closing their eyes, in a similar sitting posture. Pre and post assessments were made on both the groups.

The subjects were explained about the nature of the study and were given basic information about the EPI technique as well as the procedure for assessment. They had to keep all the ten fingers one by one on the glass surface of the EPI equipment and data recorded. See Figure 2 for a representation of EPI equipment The study was approved by the University Ethics Committee.

The second part of the research was a pre-post repeated measures study with varying duration of Prana Mudra practice. The practice was for 10 minutes on the first day, 15 minutes on the second day and 20 minutes on the third day.

Results

The result of the mudra intervention showed statistically significant changes in the mean values on the third day compared to the first day on the EPI parameter known as Average Intensity. It was also observed that prana

mudra produces perceivable results with EPI instrument only when it is performed for a minimum duration of 20 minutes

The difference in pre-post intervention values of the first day were compared with the difference in pre- post intervention values of the third day of Mudra practice using independent sample t test. The mean value of the EPI parameters Average Intensity and Entropy showed significant changes (p<.05), indicating the possible effect of mudra intervention. The effect size was high for the variable Average Intensity.

Discussion

Mudras are used for energy manipulation in one’s own body. The energy manipulation will have both immediate and long term effects. This study has focused on the immediate effect just after the intervention and also on the third day of the intervention.

The first part of the experiment was to study the difference between sitting quietly with eyes closed with attention on breath (control group) with that of sitting quietly applying Prana mudra (Mudra group) and with attention on the breath. This practice done for 5 minutes had a consistent change in effect size for the three variables of EPI, namely, Normalized Area, Average Intensity and Entropy. Change in these variables is an indication of possible energy manipulation.

The increased effect size for Mudra is an indication of a possible chance of recognizing this intervention from the control when the experiment is repeated for a longer duration. The Neural network based classification was able to classify the Mudra and Control groups after the intervention more accurately than before the intervention.

The statistically significant difference in the means of the variable Average Intensity demonstrates the effect of mudra on the level of quantum activity or the inner energy,

The second part of the experiment which involved repeating the Mudra intervention

with varying duration for 3 days showed a statistically significant difference in the EPI parameters Average Intensity and Entropy (p<.05) on the third day compared to the first day. The difference in pre- post values of the first day were compared with the third day. This is an indication that Mudra must be practiced for durations of more than 20 minutes in one sitting to see an appreciable change.

It is said that Prana Mudra is used for curing eye related problems. In future studies the EPI parameters can be extracted for the related organs like the eye to see the corresponding changes.

Conclusion

Adopting a mudra and sitting quietly with eyes closed for 5 minutes did not have a large difference in the EPI parameters. However, Mudra practiced for a longer time showed significant increase in the overall energy in the subject. Mudra must be practiced for more than 20 minutes in one sitting for observing a detectable change in the EPI parameters.

Apr 1-30: With the aim of all round personality development of the children every year VYASA – Bengaluru conducts Personality Development Camp (PDC) in the serene atmosphere of Prashanti Kutiram. Camp is conducted for the children from 10 – 15 years age group. In the month of April, during the summer vacation, the camp is conducted in 3 Batches, each batch for 10 days.

Energy and EnjoymentEnergy is Shakthi. Shakthi is power. Enjoyment is Ananda. Ananda is pleasure. Shakthi is vigour and vitality. Shiva is enjoyment and happiness. Shiva denotes enjoyment. There cannot be enjoyment when there is no energy. Energy is useless without enjoyment. In other words Shakthi (energy) and Shiva (enjoyment) are always inseparable. They are always the two sides of the same coin, Atman or self. Therefore, in Indian mythology, Shakthi and Shiva are shown as Ardhanarishvara. Naari is Sthree or Prakruthi. Ishwara is Lord or Purusha. It is only when Prakruthi and Purusha are together, there is Shivashakthi.

Shakthi or energy is available at various levels. At the physical level, the physical energy gives the physical pleasure. At the emotional level, there is emotional energy and it gives emotional enjoyment. At the intellectual level,

it is intellectual energy and it gives intellectual happiness. When the energy is full and silent, it is calmness, powerful poise. It gives peacefulness.Beyond that is the flowering of the energy, giving rise to spiritual force and it gives spiritual bliss. This bliss is the highest and the greatest.Therefore, it is called Brahmananda.

As long as the higher dimensions of happiness (Ananda) are not experienced, the lower level of pleasures only will be sought after. Ordinary people want to be physically energetic and strong to indulge in sense pleasures. Sense pleasures are such as the pleasure of eating, the pleasure of drinking, the pleasure of hugging, etc. As long as emotional enjoyments, such as fulfilment of love are not experienced, physical pleasures alone will be considered to be the goal of life. When love in its pure form, with all its energy, gives enjoyment, bodily pleasures appear to be secondary. For example, patriotism is an emotional energy. This emotional energy gives emotional enjoyment and physical pleasures will be dropped by a good patriot. Mahatma Gandhi, on account of his patriotic love for the country, gave up all desire for physical indulgence in bodily pleasures. Intellectual happiness is much more subtle. Intellectual energy is required for research and for the discovery of truth in any area of knowledge. Mathematician Ramanujam, physicist Sir C V Raman and the great scientists like Newton and Einstein, used their intellectual energy for enjoying the subtle intellectual happiness. They don’t prefer either the physical pleasures or the emotional enjoyments. All their physical and emotional energies are preserved

giving up desire for living at any cost (giving up abinivesa, clinging to life as Yoga Sutra puts it), loving kindness towards all – both living and nonliving – could take us seamlessly from here to there!

In the year 1987, Dr. Elmer Green was responsible for starting (along with the present writer and another clinical psychologist, Dr. Carol Schneider) International Society for the Study of Subtle Energy and Energy Medicine, long before Energy Medicine became a fancy name. He was also the founder of Association of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback. His meetings at Council Grove in Kansas are wonderful gathering of like-minded people (small in number and by invitation only) attracted intellectuals who searched for Reality through discussion on Aurobindo, Vedic studies, Eastern and Western philosophies and healing techniques. be done with capacitive coupled electrodes on the chest and back of a meditating or healing subject. Such electrodes are already used in special environments for assessing ECG and other vital parameters in humans. and heightened to be of intellectual energy to enjoy the intellectual happiness. Later, all the energies require to be lulled into silence, as the day’s hard work requires rest in the sleep. And that sleep is nothing but “energies in silence” or in store. They get their rest or peace only to be rejuvenated and reverberated in a greater form, with higher intensity to blossom as spiritual energy. When once a person has accumulated and transformed all the energies into spiritual energies, the result will be spiritual bliss, and this is the highest

Brahmananda experienced by a yogi.

Yoga enhances not only the physical energy and the physical pleasures, not only the emotional energy and the emotional enjoyments, not only the intellectual energy and intellectual happiness, not only the silent energy and psychic peace, but also the spiritual energy to experience the spiritual bliss. Since yoga is a promoter of energy and the corresponding Ananda, it is Shakthi and Shiva. Let us practice yoga to be always peaceful and blissful.

Understanding the Biophysics of Pranain the light of the Self and Pure Consciousness

I would like to share two amusing incidences with you, when I began a research in the field of Consciousness and Self. I recollect Dr. Kenneth Heilman, while I was at University of Florida, at Mc Knight Brain Institute, US, in our Interns training and writing chamber, he calls me and with characteristic “Amusement” & gestures reflecting from his sharpest and brightest eyes, “If I knew Stuart Sutherland’s definition of Consciousness, ... I did not.

Sutherland a British Psychologist, famous for his dismissive and devastating remarks for various issues and challenges, had published in his “Dictionary of Psychology” a starting definition that I proceeded and thought of sharing it to Dr. Alex Hankey, my PhD mentor, it goes like this ...... “Consciousness is a fascinating but Elusive Phenomena, it is impossible to specify what it is, what it does or why it evolved...... Nothing worth reading has been written about it”, (Stuart Sutherland, International Dictionary of Psychology, 2nd Ed, (New York; Continum,

1996).

We laughed heartily and before we discussing something more on this topic and considering merits of his masterpiece of enthusiasm, Dr. Alex, quickly read me Sutherland’s definition of Love, here it is for the curious reader, it goes like this, “A form of Mental Illness not yet recognized by any of the Standard Diagnostic Manuals “.We laughed some more. Even by the standards of the day, Sutherland’s statement was extreme , quote Damasio, although it captures a widely held attitude , the time for Consciousness Research, by which everyone really meet research on How Brain accounts for Consciousness, had not yet come.

shared to my second guide Guruji (Dr. H R Nagendra), and get his insights on the expansive area of the research, who is an aviator in the field of ocean of Consciousness research. Particularly Physics, Meta Physics and Vedanta. We shared the quotes along with our laughter and sooner one unique vibration was felt by me and Dr. Alex. I got back to my desk and started writing.

The following idea and insights came from Guruji, mind to mind, brain to brain, heart to heart, to both of us. This was the “Magic of Guruji’s Logic”. Our preliminary ideas into the Consciousness research and mainly experimental research were simplified to an unbelievable level, where everybody can experience Consciousness within the Inner Space of One’s Self. Guruji a Space Scientists, the greatest teacher of Vedanta and he often dives us into the Space, Chidakash and Chittakash. This was in complete sync with my Swamiji’s Dr. Nagarkar’s teachings on Science of Meditation and Ashtangyoga. It was in complete sync and coherence, the connectome with the Gross with that of the Subtle.

Albert Einstein proposed concerning matter, “we have been all wrong, what we have called matter is Energy, whose Vibration has been so lowered as to be Perceptible to the senses. There is no Matter. Indian Philosophy considers the entire Universe to be made up of two materials – Akasha and Prana (Quote NVC Swamy). Akasha is the omnipresent all pervading existence. Anything gross, which has form and is the result of combination, comes out of Akasha. But, by itself, it is so subtle that it cannot be perceived. “It exits by itself” at the beginning of the cycle of creation, and at its end everything dissolves back into Akasha. What motivates and activates Akasha into creating and transforming the Universe is Prana.

It is known to all of us, that Life is felt through the breath, experienced via Prana. Everything starts from Prana (Kena Up - Pranasya Prana) and the secret of our Self is in the interaction within and between this Space inner, during

inhalation and outer during exhalation, we don’t need any science to test this personal experience – you can watch a complete talk by our beloved Guruji Dr. H.R. Nagendra, on this topic given at NIMHANS Symposium on Self and Mind 2015 and Molecules to Mind, National Brain Research Center Delhi.

The past four centuries to understand and unravel this great mystery has been the greatest challenge, The quest for reality has been the endeavour of humankind at all times. The 17th Century initiated new surge, a new line, a new approach in “Search of Reality”. The forefathers of the present era of science and technology: Descartes (1596 – 1650) and Newton (1642 – 1727) decided to systematically unravel the mystery underlying the physical aspects of the Universe, physical down-to-earth, concrete things of the world. A tradition of experimentation, observation, objective verification was set up by many scientists in different places at different times before coming to a conclusion and presentation of the results as possible. This systematic approach was accepted and adopted by all those scientists who carried on the task of search, maintaining continuity. After four centuries of challenges, upheavals and breakthroughs, we have now understood the physical universe, its structure and the dynamics, as well. Newtonian laws of motion govern the physical universe around us. To find a cause a phenomenon became the core of scientific investigations. Early 20th centuries came the breakthrough enlarging the spectrum of classical mechanics with deterministic approach into Quantum Mechanics as we entered into the subtler world of this Physical Universe.

Space-time continuum and the Uncertainty principle enlarge the vision of science into realms of greater freedom and flexibility. As the probe into subtler world of fundamental particles intensified and the scientists started looking into the mechanism of creation. The observer cannot observe without disturbing

the observed – the facts which have shaken the entire objective experimentation as the basis which formed the core of science for the last four centuries. And now we are at the turning point. Subjectivity is somehow to be fitted into the scientific experimentation, say many Nobel Laureates, and this is the challenge before the scientific community.

Deeper insights were brought in by the uncertainty principle, knowledge of DNA and RNS molecules, their behaviour etc., brain cells and their functioning started bringing in deeper insights. Thus, after nearly four centuries, growth of science has led us to enter into subtler dimensions of the Universe. We are now to unravel the mysteries related to ‘the subtler than the physical world’: life (Prana), mind, emotions, intellect, ego, spirit, soul, consciousness and so on. It is into this realm of creation that seers on ancient India had made headway, by not only understanding the structure of the inner world only, but also the dynamics which govern different layers of consciousness; this wisdom is contained in Science of Vedanta and Yoga.

Prof. Josephson, the Nobel Laureate from Cambridge University, believes that Upanishads can give modern physicists new directions while probing into subtler dimensions of this creation. Prana should be studied and its mysteries unravelled to progress in search of reality that governs individual’s nerves, brain and self. One should inquire what is that which makes one to breathe, the neuron to fire, how the brains makes mind , what makes the equilibrium of the tri doshas , pulsations , heart beats and what is it , that brings the connect into our five Koshas to form a character of our self as one Unique Individual.

Modern physiologists tell us that the eyes are not the organ of vision, but the organ is one of the nerve centres of the brain, and so with all the other senses as well; they also tell us that these centers are formed of the same material as the brain itself. The Samkhya also tell the same

thing. The former is a statement on the physical side, and the latter on the psychological side; yet both are the same. Our field of research lies beyond this. The point where the sciences pauses the Vedanta appears as a turning point to drive our Conscious Awareness further into the deeper and subtler layers of the truth of the existence, life and reality. This it is an Evolution; a Creative Innovation of the Nature, the life here is the experience that the entire Universe is witnessing.

Vedanta says “Consciousness is our ability to form Conscious Expereince”. Wherein the subtle are the causes, the gross the effects. Consciousness has two different areas of manifestation. When it is in the form of movement and in an activity, it has definite pattern and structure known as Chitta. With the Technique of Yoga the Meditation, the mind can develop the skill to stay in its original source that is in its Swarupa, this is “the highest level of creative ability” of the Prakriti. When it is free from the modification and any kind of form, pattern or structure, it is known as Chitta, this is the understanding of Chitta shared as Antahkarana (Swami Madhavananda). Chit represents Consciousness with a Capital “C” which we call Atman and Chitta represents consciousness in a small ‘c’ which we call mind. This can be accessed, experienced and witnessed by the reflexive power of the mind, via our depth of perception.

The one who thinks and perceive is the Self. What is refered to as Self is Atman, the mind always exists in dependence on something gross, it cannot stay alone. It is the mind that is called the Subtle body or the souls i.e. Jiva. Thought indeed is the Nature of Mind, breath if gross of the mind – Ramana Maharshi. Individual Soul Jiva enjoys the three planes of the existence 1. The Causal, 2. The Subtle and 3. The Gross planes of existence, A, U and M, with the help of five layered body i.e. Panchakoshas.

Subtle is the Creativity of the Consciousness; we call it the dance or a play of Shiva and Shakti, wherein Consciousness is the sole reality of Universe. The Energy of Consciousness i.e. Para Shakti” in the form of 1.Will, 2. Wisdom and 3. Action creates, sustains and dissolves the Universe. Parashakti is in the three original forms to act out the play of Consciousness they are 1. Mother Lakshmi, representing Iccha Shakti – Energy of Will, 2. Mother Durga – representing the Kriya Shakti – Energy of Action and 3. Mother Saraswati – representing the Jnana Shakti – Energy of Wisdom. These three are responsible for the Universal Creativity. This is systematically mapped in the Human Brain in the frontal lobe, this area is the frontier of Lord Ganesha, the Riddhi and Siddhi are the two sides, left and the right, of our Brain, the one who brings in the integration and the coherence between the two sides of the brain the frontal lobe space of Lord Ganesha, we anchor this by always praying first to lord Ganesha, the result of this are the various sidhis, enjoyed by the Jivatman. This is incorporated and acted upon with the medium of the Self, Atman and Jivantman, each one of us being the part of this dance and creativity.

We witness this dance by the process of Yog, connecting Jivatman with the Paramatman, where the brain through meditation drives into the deeper and deeper layers of Prana transcending the Para Shakti, just by the technique of focus and attention into the ajna chakra, the direct entrance of the Individual Consciousness into the Universal Consciousness, the journey of the Jivatman into the Paramatman, by the process of Self Transcendence.

Quickly, let me go back to the lectures and the collection of works by Swami Vivekananda on the topic of Prana and Raja yoga, on getting to this most beautiful journey of the “Art of Creative Living”, in order to understand deeper levels of reality. But, this Science can only be safely learnt by direct contact with a teacher, because our Vedanta Knowledge is based upon direct experience. This Knowledge is the knowledge of the Mind, of the internal nature of human being, of thought, by observing the facts that are going on within, by being aware of the breath; in the internal world we have no instrument to do the analysis, it is the experience of the Self – Self knows itself through Self only, (Mun Up 1.2) in the company of one’s Guru.

We have to go back to this hotspot i.e. GPS - Guru Parampara System to explore and unravel the mysteries of the connect of and between the Gross and the Subtle, situated within the atom of the atom, by giving the fullest concentration, attention and focus by refining our reflexive entity in the brain. The deeper journey within and into this dimension we shall see next time, with the blessings of all the Gurus and Param Gurus on this most auspicious land of Bharat.

News from VYASA - Kolkata

Mar 10, a Awareness Programme on SUJOK Therapy was conducted at VYASA - Kolkata. Session was conducted by the Sujok Therapy Specialist Dr. Preeti Ganatra of Kolkata. Both the students and teachers from Millennium Mam’s and VYASA Kolkata were participated in the programme.

Mar 11, 21 students of Post Graduate Diploma in Yoga Therapy (PGDYT) from Jadavpur University were deputed to S-VYASA University, Bengaluru for their one month intensive training on IAYT.

Weekly Teachers Meetings were conducted in the presence of the Chairman of VYASA - Kolkata.

Mar 17-19, there was a National Yoga Fest / Mela 2017 (Awareness Programme on Holistic benefits of Yoga) at Belur Math. It was organized by the Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University, Belur under the aegis of CCRYN New Delhi, Department of AYUSH, Government of India,

Examination for Yoga Teacher Level – 2in Japan by Quality Council of India (QCI)

Under the Scheme of Voluntary Certification of Yoga Professionals supported by AYUSH and managed by QCI, examination for Yoga Teacher Level - 2 was conducted at Japan. Including Dr. Karuna Nagarajan, Asst. Professor from S-VYASA, Bengaluru, there were totally Three Examiners. One is Mr. Ikata Hiroshi, Mentor from Kaivalyadhama, Lonavala and another one is Mr. Manoj Thakur from VYASA Yoga & Ayurveda Singapore.

The examination was conducted by Indian Yoga Association (IYA), personnel certification body to carry out certification as per Yoga Profession Certification Scheme. IYA is a self-regulatory body established in 31st Oct, 2008 approved by Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India & Min. of Health & Family Welfare and aims to develop and promote the knowledge, education and applications of Yoga for the benefit of all sections of the society.

The examination was scheduled for 4 days, from Mar 31 – Apr 4, in two places, Osaka and Tokyo. Totally 81 candidates were examined, out of which 44 from Osaka and 37 from Tokyo.

Integrative medicine is grounded in the definition of health. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Patient centered care is the core belief of integrative medicinal approach and addresses the full range of physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental influences that affect a person’s health. Employing a personalized strategy that considers the patient’s unique conditions, needs and circumstances, it uses the most appropriate interventions from an array of disciplines to heal illness and disease as well as regain and maintain optimum health. Through personalizing care, integrative medicine goes beyond the treatment of symptoms to address all the root causes of an illness. In doing so, the patient’s immediate health needs as well as the effects of the long-term and complex interplay between biological, behavioral, psycho-social and environmental influences are taken into account. With a growing demand in the field of Integrative medicine, it can be considered a global priority in the research and development of long term, cost effect medical care and disease management.

Pain ManagementPain management has become a major challenge for the health care provider communities as well as for thousands or patients. On one hand pain has increased in various areas – from Rheumatoid Arthritis to Cancer to sports medicine. Usage of opioid has significantly increased in last one decade. However, it has become a challenge as well in the form of drug overdose and abuse.

Recent studies indicate that over 30% of the American population ages ranging from 12 – 75, suffers from chronic pain. The gold standard for pain management are opioid group of drugs, however with the rising incidence of opioid dependency and abuse, alternative methods are in demand.Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the US, with 55,403 lethal drug overdoses in 2015. Opioid addiction is driving this epidemic, with 20,101 overdose deaths related to prescription pain relievers, and 12,990 overdose deaths related to heroin in 2015
