PSLE
PSLE - a placement exam
• To reflect the relative achievement level of
pupils within their peers.
• Enables posting to secondary schools by
merit and as far as possible into a school
of their choice.
20
The PSLE Aggregate Score
• Incorporates performance of
pupils in all 4 subjects
• It is not a raw score
21
Why can’t the raw score be used?
• Different subjects have different
levels of difficulty
• So are the spread of marks from the
average mark, i.e. the standard
deviation (spread = standard
deviation)
22
A child scores 85% in both
English and Mother Tongue
Scenario
23
A child scores 85% in both EL and MT
85%
EL
EL ave
= 60
MT
MT ave
= 70
0 100
24
A need for standardisation of the
raw scores
Transformed Score
or T-Score
25
What is T-Score?
• T-Score gives the relative position of a pupil’s
performance as compared to the
performance of all the other pupils in that
subject
• The raw mark obtained in the exam
only shows how good the pupil is in
that subject, not how good he is as
compared to others
26
T-Score MT
ave = 70
85% 85%
T-Score converts average mark of each subject to
a common score of 50 points. It also converts
other marks taking into consideration the extent to
which they differ from the average and the size of
spread of the marks around the average 27
57
68 ave = 60
EL
50
T-Score
How is T-Score calculated for
each subject?
where
X: pupil’s mark for the subject
Y: average mark (mean) scored by all
pupils
Z: spread of marks around the average
mark (standard deviation)
Z
Y) - (X 10 50 T + =
28
Example: MT 85%
• Pupil’s mark (X) in exam = 85
• Average mark (Y) scored by
all pupils = 75 • Spread of marks (Z) around the average
mark (Y) = 14
T = 50 + 10 (85 - 75)
14 = 57
29
Example: EL 85%
• Pupil’s mark (X) in exam = 85
• Average mark (Y) scored by
all pupils = 60 • Spread of marks (Z) around the average
mark (Y) = 14
T = 50 + 10 (85 - 60)
14 = 68
30
How is the Aggregate Score calculated?
By adding the T-Scores of
the 4 subjects
31
Example:
Subject Total Mark T-Score
EL 200 190 68
CL 200 180 66
Maths 100 80 58
Science 100 86 55
Aggregate: 247
32
T-SCORES & GRADES:
Is it possible for a pupil with
3A*1A
to be ranked lower than another
pupil who has only
1A*3As?
33
Subject Pupil A Pupil B
Marks T-Score Grade Marks T-Score Grade
EL 182 60 A 190 68 A*
MT 185 67 A* 180 66 A
MA 91 61 A* 80 58 A
SC 92 56 A* 86 55 A
Aggregate
T-Score 244 247

Direct School Admission (DSA) - Sec
DSA-Sec is an admission exercise to
allow participating schools to select some
P6 students for admission to Secondary 1
based on their achievements and talents
before the PSLE results are released.
40
Can I apply for direct admission to any
secondary school?
Not all secondary schools are
participating in the DSA-Sec Exercise.
You may refer to the list of
participating schools in this year’s
exercise on the MOE Website.
41

- Apply directly to school (s)
- Attend interview/test/camp to assess applicants
- Will be given confirmed offer or put on a waiting list or not successful
Sit for the PSLE (Oct)
Exercise School Preference Stage (Late Oct)

Results Stage (Nov) 42
Gathering Information on Schools
Student obtains information on DSA-Sec schools, such as niche areas, selection criteria, dates of trials / tests / interviews, etc, through the following:
Checking the schools’ websites,
calling the schools, and / or
visiting the schools
43
Considerations when making decision
Since posting is done based on aggregate score first, it
is important to choose schools that are comparable to
the child’s academic ability
Last year’s posting aggregate ranges of the schools
Academic performance of the child
Distance
Affiliated schools
Programmes and schemes offered
Special needs/interests of the child 44
Important points
Parents and their child attend the schools’
open houses.
Know what the schools are offering, the
electives, the programmes for the gifted
learners, the culture of the school, the CCA
programme, etc.
Do discuss with your child of the choices
