1 IntroductionProtection devices in the MiCOM 30 Series are described in detail in the respectivetechnical manuals as regards technical properties, functional characteristics, and properhandling during installation, connection, commissioning, and operation.
However, the technical manuals are very comprehensive due to the innumerable features ofMiCOM 30 Series devices. Beginners may have a hard time with learning how to operate adevice.
The present documentation is intended to help those users get started. The intension is toaccompany the user by learning basic operating procedures and enabling him to continueoneself.
2 How to UseThe concept of this documentation is to learn step by step, i.e. each exercise requires thatthe previous exercise has been carried out successfully.
So please dont jump!Start at the beginning. The number of pages is 20 only.

3 Local Control Panel3.1 BasicsMiCOM 30 Series devices incorporate a comprehensive package of individual functions inorder to permit an extensive and universal scope of application. This results in a hugenumber of data points (setting vales, signals, measured values, etc.) which are arranged intwo ways:
Function groups:All data points are grouped in function groups according to the function they areassociated with.
Folders:All data points are also organized in different folders based on practical controlrequirements.
The description of all data points in their entirety is called data model which is structured inthe way of a menu tree.
The menu tree begins with the device type at the top and then branches out below into thethree main folders entitled 'Parameters', 'Operation', and 'Events', which form the first folderlevel. Below the first folder level are two more folder levels, so that the entire folder structureconsists of three main branches and a maximum of three folder levels.
At the bottom of each branch of folders, below the folder levels, are the various function
groups in which the individual data points are combined. Two different types of functiongroups are provided:
Global functions:Functions operating globally allow the adaptation of the devices interfaces to theprotected power system, offer support during commissioning and testing and providecontinuously updated information on the operation, as well as valuable analysis resultsfollowing events in the protected system.
Main functions:Main functions are autonomous function groups and can be individually configured ordisabled to suit a particular application. Function groups that are not required and have
been disabled by the user are masked completely (except for the configurationparameter) and functional support is withdrawn from such groups.

3.2 Selecting ParametersAll data points (setting values, signals, measured values, etc.) are selected using the menutree. As the user navigates through the menu tree, the first two lines of the LCD displayalways show the branch of the menu tree that is active, as selected by the user. The datapoints are accessed at the lowest level of a menu tree branch. They are displayed with theirplain text description. The value associated with the selected data point, its meaning, andits unit of measurement are displayed in the line below.
The desired parameter (e.g. MiCOM Px3x / Parameters / Config.paramters / LOC /Decimal delimiter) can be selected by pressing the keys Left, Right, Up and Down:

3.3 Changing ParametersAlthough it is possible to select any data point in the menu tree and read the associatedvalue by pressing the keys, it is not possible to switch directly to the input mode. Thissafeguard prevents unintended changes in the settings. For that prior to any parameterchange password has to be entered.

3.4 Cold RestartMany problems may occur due to the fact that the setting status of the device is difficult forthe user to see whats going on. Regarding these problems its recommended to intialize acold restart in order to put the device in its default status.
Prior to initializing a cold restart please ensure that the device is disabled(MiCOM Px3x / Parameters / Functionparamters / Global / MAIN / Protection enabled):

3.5 LED ALARMAfter the reboot of the device the ALARM LED is on due to a deliberate distortion of theparameter checksum which initializes the desired cold restart automatically.

3.7 Configuring and Enabling of Function GroupsAfter the reboot of the device the function groups of all main functions (such as IDMT, DIST,DIFF, ) are disabled.
In order to enable a function group (e.g. DIFF: Differential Protection) the desired functiongroup has to be configured first. Please select the corresponding configuration parameterand change it accordingly by the procedures described in chapters 3.2 and 3.3(e.g. MiCOM Px3x / Parameters / Config.paramters / DIFF / Function group DIFF):

3.8 Tripping Matrix and Configuration of Output RelaysIts important to know that the trip signals of the various protection functions are not suitablefor trip command purposes due to their undefined timing.
Note: Never use a trip signal to operate the circuit breaker directly! Always use a tripcommand!
For command purposes MiCOM 30 Series devices provide at least 2 trip commands. Thefunctions to effect a trip can be selected by setting an 'm out of n' parameter independentlyfor each of them (e.g. MiCOM Px3x / Parameters / Function parameters / Global / MAIN /Fct.assig.trip cmd.1):

4 Operating ProgramMiCOM 30 Series devices can be operated via module S&R-103 of MiCOM S1 suite. Forthis please connect a serial port of your PC to the front port of the MiCOM 30 Series devicevia a standard serial PC connection lead and start S&R-103 on your PC.
4.1 Checking Communication SettingsPrior to start communicating with the device please open the dialog box CommunicationSettings (Communication / Communication Settings...):
Check the following settings:
Link Type:Ensure that Link Type Direct is selected.
Serial Interface:Ensure that the corresponding Serial Interface of your PC is selected.

4.3 Readout of the Data ModelIt may happen that S&R-103 cannot create the default setting file due to the lack of thecorresponding data model:
In that case you can readout (Communication / Read Data Model...) and store the datamodel in the preset folder:
Now a new default settings file can be created manually (File / New...):
by selecting the desired combination of device type and SW version (which has to be equalto the data model version):
or you repeat the procedure described in chapter 4.2.

4.4 Identification of the Fitted ModulesThe number of inputs and outputs of any MiCOM 30 Series device varies depending on theordered optional modules. S&R-103 will display always the maximum if the design versionof the particular device is unknown. Therefore we recommend to readout the design versionfirst before changing parameters. Assignments to inputs and outputs which are notavailable will be avoided.
In order to readout the fitted modules please open the dialog box Design Version (Tools /Design Version) and click the button Update:
Now S&R-103 starts in communication with the device:

5 Increasing your ExperienceNow you have the best opportunity to increase your experience on operatingMiCOM 30 Series device by yourself:
Configuration of Measured Value Panels:Configure the 'Operation Panel' (MiCOM Px3x / Config.parameters / LOC / Fct.Operation Panel) in order to display cyclic updated measurand values at the LocalControl Panel automatically.
Cyclic readout of values:Open the corresponding window (Communication / Cyclic Readout of Data),configure a set of data points (should be those values which are grouped in the folderCyclic measurements of the menu tree) and start the cyclic readout.
Operating data recording:Readout operating data memory (Communication / Readout of Log / Operating DataRecording).
Fault recording and fault data acquisition:Trigger a fault record manually (MiCOM Px3x / Operating / Control and Testing /FT_RC / Trigger USER) and readout the fault record from fault memory (Communication/ Readout of Fault).
