Description:

A two-sided, printed brochure.

Date:12/6/2014

Course/Instructor:COMM 130 Section 05

 Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.

Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:I opened up InDesign and created a grid layout for my brochure. I thencreated text boxes for my information about my company and laidthem out in an order with a good ow. After creating the layout I in-serted images into ellipses I made with the ellipse tool and arrangedthem. I then used various tools to create claw marks, and then usedthe text wrap tool to wrap text around the claw marks and front coverimage. Afterwards I used the rectangle tool to insert the color back-ground.

Description:Three different logo designs for the same company.

Date:11/1/2014

Course/Instructor:COMM 130 Section 05

 Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:

Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Create three completely different, original logos to t a company orpersonal image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate exist-ing logos or use previous designs.Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illus-trator pre-fabricated ares, symbols, etc.. No photos or live-tracing.You may use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/

pencil, but delete the image before submitting.)Gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals mostto them.

Process:The program I used was Adobe Illustrator. For the rst logo I just usedthe text tool and used a decorative font to give it an older feel to goalong with dragon ghters. For the middle logo I used the text tool tomake the D and then used the ellipse tool to make the head, and then

used the direct select tool to make it look more like a head. I thenmade another ellipse and used the twirl tool and eraser to make thetail. After I completed the tail, I made one more ellipse and used thecrystallize tool to make the wing. For the third logo I made two el-lipses, used the twirl tool and eraser to make a thinner looking dragonshape that also appears as a D and F merged together, and then addedthe text.

Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document tokeep links in InDesign intact.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills):I created sketches to help plan ideas, and then used one of my sketchideas and enhanced it in Adobe InDesign . I used different shades ofellipses for repetition, contrast, and to add to the ow. I also empha-sized one word in my title for more contrast, and to help with the ow.I left white space and kept my body copy small. I was given the image,

logo, and content for this ier.

Program(s)/Tools:

Photoshop

Objectives:Learn basic photography skills.Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incor-porate the colors into the layout.Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on sepa-rate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)

Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.5×11 page layout.Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photo-shop.Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all foursides.

Process:I started out this project by taking my photos rst since I was worriedabout getting a camera. A friend let me borrow their Nikon D3000.

After receiving inspiration from the photos, I formulated a plan withthe complementary color scheme in the Visual FOCUS template. Ibrought the photos into Photoshop and practiced using the levels, sharpness, saturation, and color balance adjustments. I then openeda 8.5 x 11 document, inserted my photo and added an inspiration-al quote in the bottom. I then used multiple rectangles to add to thephoto and design. After adding the nal touches I inserted the colorswatches on the top and side adding my color scheme.

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and owUnify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual messageLearn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masksDemonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multipleelements

Use a mask to apply a lter to one part of the imageApply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scriptures…yourchoice)Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size.Theme word(s)Select good quality images

Process:I imported and cropped the background image to make it 8.5×11. I

then imported the image of the lilies and created a mask over it. Usingthe brush tool and black paint I created a soft-edge with the brush atan opacity of 100%. After softening the edges I lowered the opacity to40% and went around the circular edge again to give it a more gradualfade. I then used the opacity on the image and lowered it from 100%to 70%.

Description:Matching business card and letter head with personally created logo.

Date:11/8/2014

Course/Instructor:COMM 130 Section 05

 Joel Judkins

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign.Create a new logo to t a company or personal image. Do not imitate ex-isting logos or use previous designs. Don’t use photos or live trace.Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card andletterhead. Photos are okay on business card and letterhead as additionaldesign elements. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed optional, buttrim only .125. Business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above centeron a vertical page.Apply typography rules, keeping small copy.Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop shadows and plentyof white space.Include contact information: name, address, phone, and email on eachpiece. Use periods, bullets, or spaces in phone number; no parentheses/hyphens.

Process:

I created my letterhead with the same information and design from thebusiness card. I added a dotted line to make the information stand outmore and create space between the letterhead and the rest of the docu-ment. I then took my logo and inserted it into the document. I gave itaround a 15% opacity due to it’s darker color, reected the logo, and putit in the bottom right side of the document to create better asymmetry.

Process:I rst created my business card design. I created two rectangles withthe rectangle tool and then added my new personal logo into the rect-angle representing the of the back business card. I also added the logoto the front of the business card, but I minimized it allowing there tobe more room for the information and create even white space. I thenadded the text with the business information on the card, and addedcolor to the back of the card to make it more visually appealing.

Program(s)/Tools:TextWrangler

Objectives:Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 –500 pixels.Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals toa target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal totarget audience, design skills, etc,)Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags – Doctype (pro-vided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or ul (with li

tags), img, hr, and a link to blog)Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the provided CSS provided to for-mat the HTML to complement the logo design. Change at least the following: Theh1 text color & background color, font colors for the paragraphs & list items, thebackground color, font families and add at least one css comment.)Identify hex colors to match logo, using Photoshop color picker.Open the HTML page in a web browser and capture a quality screen shot with .5inch margins for printing.

Process:

Using TextWrangler I learned how to create HTML and CSS code to create a webpage. This was a very interesting task since I was given the outline HTML and CSScode and then just had to edit them with the correct information. To do this I lledin the desired message into the HTML code and also inserted my logo into the code.I then moved over to the CSS code and changed the hex colors to match the colorscheme of my original logo, changed the font styles, and changed the alignment for

the logo.
