The department also provides access to the highest quality services that help keep Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable citizens safe and healthy. The Challenge The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW) has a very busy Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence team. The group is tasked with providing support to more than 2,000 internal users, as well as citizens that utilize COMPASS (Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Access to Social Service). COMPASS is an online site where Pennsylvanians can apply for, access and query a range of health and human services. This critical environment is built on Microsoft Windows Servers, Oracle Databases and IBM Cognos Business Intelligence. The Pennsylvania DPW team needed to ensure a successful migration from IBM Cognos Impromptu to IBM Congos 10. They also wanted to reduce system bottlenecks and optimize performance for both internal ad-hoc queries and pre-packaged external queries from COMPASS. Additionally, the team had to deliver granular data usage analysis to meet HIPPA regulations related to PROMISe (Provider Reimbursement and Operations Management Information System), which supports several terabytes of Medicaid claim information. Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare Boosts Performance with AppfluentThe Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare supports families’ efforts to break the cycle of dependence and find permanent employment and move from welfare to work. The department also provides access to the highest quality services that help keep Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable citizens safe and healthy.

The ChallengeThe Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW) has a very busy Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence team.

Case Study

The SolutionThe Pennsylvania DPW selected Appfluent to support their efforts. Appfluent profiled actual user activity—down to the database column—of Cognos Impromptu. These user activity insights allowed the team to identify which users to migrate and helped the team to devise the best migration plan.

Appfluent also provided a ranking of the most active applications by user. This data allowed the Pennsylvania DPW to manage ‘unauthorized’ or ‘prohibited’ activity. They quickly identified users running prohibited applications against the data marts and were able to take corrective actions.

With Appfluent, query performance for both ad-hoc and pre-pack-aged reports has also been maintained and enhanced based on complex query analysis and table usage information. Now, the Pennsylvania DPW can deliver better service and access to infor-mation to their staff and constituents.
