“Success means we go to sleep at night knowing that our talents and abilities were used in a way that served others.” ~~Marianne Williamson

What you might not know about PA Services here at Cleveland Clinic is that we are looked upon by other major hospital systems throughout the U.S. as a leader in PA organiza on and prac ce.

We receive requests from hospitals, businesses and individuals to come and tour our facili es to see just what you are doing and how are you doing it. Throughout the years, we have shared our policies, prac ces and u liza on guides with mul ple groups.

Recently, we hosted Lippinco /JAAPA business partners here on main campus. We toured many different areas of the hospital and outpa ent areas. The PAs within these areas were extremely engaged, recep ve to their ques ons and gave a great deal of their me to talk about what they do.

The day went seamlessly mostly due to the PAs who stopped their work and took the me to talk with our guests. The work they do (all of you do) is beyond amazing! The teams you are leading, the research in which you are par cipa ng, and the com-plexity of the pa ents whom you care for is truly remarkable. Like a proud parent, we showed off all that you do. The Lip-pinco folks were completely impressed at the professionalism, the wealth of knowledge and the compassion shown by our PAs.

And they should be!

You have made Cleveland Clinic one of the top hospital systems in PA organiza on and u liza on. Health Care systems and private prac ces throughout the U.S. look to us to see how we recruit, interview, onboard and u lize our PAs in all prac ce se ngs. Our leadership organiza onal model is viewed as a gold standard for PA repor ng structures.

And our PA student ini a ve is the only one like it in the U.S.; a program administrator dedicated to PA students, centralized scheduling and onboarding, a preceptor council and monthly face to face mee ngs with all PA students onsite, enable us to engage, a ract and retain new graduates and matriculate them into em-ployees. This ini a ve will soon begin to be emulated by other hospital systems.

They say the biggest compliment is imita on. Systems throughout the U.S. are imita ng our organiza onal struc-tures. You have set the bar and it is set high! We will con nue to assist those who want to model our ways, as that is our PA Services Mission and Vision:

For the Spring 2014 issue of the PA Newsletter the spotlight is on Corey Merrill. Corey is a PA student from Ohio Domini-can University. Corey knew right away that Ohio Domini-can was the program for him. He was treated as an individual and the faculty "showed such passion in educating students to become well-rounded PA's". He is fortunate to be a student in the first PA class at Ohio Do-minican and he is striving to set a high standard for future stu-dents. His interest in medicine, leading to the PA program, be-gan when he experienced a medical issue while a sopho-more at Ohio State University, then continued while he was working at The Ohio State Uni-versity Wexner Medical Center as a Family Support Coordina-tor. "The diagnosis was a moving experience that had a positive impact on my life" and through these experiences he learned the importance of being compassionate, working through difficult times, and helping others in need. "These experiences gave me the drive to be able to relate to others who struggle from illness" and to realize the im-portance of working as a team and to better under-stand the importance of human relationships. "I truly love to help people and work with them to improve their overall health."

He has completed 2 rotations and is currently working in his third and last rotation here at the

Clinic in Orthopaedics with Ted Omilanowski. Corey is interested in several areas of medicine but mainly in Orthopaedics. Thanks to his dad having a 'tool friendly' gar-age and himself being involved in sports when he was younger he spent a good deal of time in ER's and doctor's offices which to him equaled Orthopaedics. Ted has instilled in him the importance of putting patients first and being a life long student. He has gained much insight and hands on experi-ence with surgical skills from Ted.

In the little spare time he has, you most likely will encounter Corey on his bike. He enjoys stopping at small coffee and pizza shops to talk and get to know people. He is tru-ly a people person and is always searching for what someone else

can bring out in him. "I believe everyone I meet has an attribute that I can learn from and use it to improve myself as an individual." He also loves to travel, his last trip taking him backpacking through Western Europe - 8 countries and 11 cities!

Corey is honored being chosen for this highlight. He is appreciative and grateful to all the precep-tors and everyone he has encountered while ro-tating, for the time, patience, and vast medical knowledge and experience they have imparted on him. Corey states "it is an honor to be able to learn from one of the nations best hospitals, this is an experience I will never forget."

Program Administrator’s Corner

Why am I recruiting for more preceptors all the time?

The most basic answer I can give, is because the number of requests for ro-tations keeps increasing. In Ohio we currently have nine PA programs: Baldwin Wallace University, Cuyahoga Community College/CSU, University of Findlay, Kettering College, Lake Erie College, Marietta College, Mount Un-ion College, Ohio Dominican Universi-ty, and the University of Toledo. There will also be three more PA programs in the next couple of years requesting ro-tations; Ohio University, The Ohio State University, and University of Day-ton.

There are currently 181 PA programs throughout the United States. The Ac-creditation Review Commission on Ed-ucation for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) estimates 75 more programs by 2018. The average class size across the country is 45 students. There are approximately 700-800 applications to each program. Most students apply to multiple programs so those numbers include the repeat applications. There is the Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA) which the applicant fills out and sends to as many schools as they wish. CASPA is a service of the Physician Assistant Edu-cation Association (PAEA).

Not all PA programs ac-cept CASPA applica-tions. In 2013 there were 19,968 CASPA ap-plications according to PAEA.

There were over 7,000 students accepted into the graduation class of 2012, with an estimated 6,822 that graduated. With the continued in-creasing number of programs and stu-dents, there is a projection of 10,382 PA graduates for 2016-2017.

All students wishing to match a clinical rotation here must apply. Our applica-tion process enables us to match the student we believe fit the best for each rotation. It is important for us to be proactive rather than reactive with the impending influx of PA student appli-cations. With the preceptor council es-tablished last year, we are hoping to ease any reservations people may have becoming preceptors. I encourage all of you to become involved in the fu-ture of our profession by precepting these exceptional students.

Please contact me regarding precept-ing opportunities or any questions you may have. We have several preceptors who would be more than willing to help you become an outstanding pre-ceptor.

IT’S RE-PRIVILEGING TIME!

• Once again (every two years) all PAs, APNs and Physicians must be re-privileged.

• The PAs are divided into two groups for re-privileging: the first group will receive their email no ces beginning this week (Jan. 13) and must complete their packet within two (2) weeks of receiving the email.

• The second group will begin to go through re-privileging in August of this year.

• Even if you were just hired last year, you MUST go through re-privileging. We have all of the PAs on the same schedule and every even year, you will re-privilege.

• The process is all electronic this year, including your QA forms and com-petency forms.
