Airbus Defence and Space y Clean Sky

Airbus Defence and Space participa en el programa Clean Sky 2 en las plataformas “Airframe”, “Regional”, “Large Passenger Aircraft” y ha participado en el “Green Regional Aircraft” (GRA) en el programa Clean Sky 1. Clean Sky 2 es la continuación del programa Clean Sky 1, dentro del programa Horizonte 2020 de la Comisión Europea siendo actualmente Clean Sky 2 uno de los programas de investigación y desarrollo más importantes aeronáuticos de la Unión Europea, en el que participan la mayor parte de empresas industriales del sector, incluyendo PyMES, Universidades e Institutos de Investigación.

Uno de los demonstradores tecnológicos más relevante dentro de la plataforma “Airframe” es la Cabina de Material Compuesto para un avión de transporte. Este demostrador fue desarrollado y fabricado en la plataforma de “Green Regional Aircraft” (GRA) dentro del programa Clean Sky 1.

GRA es una plataforma dedicada a investigar potencialidades tecnológicas en favor del medio ambiente desde la producción a la explotación operacional de una aeronave.

Las actividades de Airbus Defence and Space en el demostrador de cabina en material compuesto se focalizaron en reducciones de peso del 10% sobre estructura primaria, manteniendo o mejorando las funcionalidades de la estructura de referencia, y reduciendo los costes de fabricación y montaje. Para ello se identificaron una serie de líneas tecnológicas que permitían cumplir con los criterios ecoeficientes fijados por el proyecto:

• Procesos de fabricación de estructuras complejas e integradas en “One Shot”

• Revestimiento rigidizado (co-curado) multifuncional, integrando materiales disimilares en material preimpregnado

• Revestimientos rigidizados planos y curvos en termoplásticos ISC (In Situ Consolidation)

• Factibilidad de conformado continuo de larguerillos de configuración sencilla

• Laminados sólidos y estructuras sandwich rigidizadas en proceso fuera de autoclave (Liquid Resin infusión-LRI )

• Distintos tipos de materiales y configuración (tejido y cinta unidireccional)

Dentro del programa Clean Sky 1 y para demostrar las líneas tecnológicas descritas anteriormente, se han fabricado dos demostradores de cabina para realizar ensayos específicos y validar la madurez tecnológica de las tecnologías propuestas siendo uno de ellos el que se expone.

Durante el proyecto se han podido explorar nuevas técnicas de diseño, tales como “FuLL 3D”, utilización de nuevos materiales y nuevas formas de fabricación e instalación. La monitorización del proceso de ensamblaje ha permitido una reducción de costes recurrentes superior al 15%.

También se han desarrollado nuevos conceptos de herramientas de simulación para realizar predicciones en cuanto a impactos dinámicos, vibro-acústica, desarrollos de SHM (Structural Health Monitoring) o complejos modos de fallo. Para ello se han trabajado en refinados modelos FEM (Finite Elements Model) con elevados índices de computación.

Igualmente, durante la fase de ensayos del demostrador, se han aplicado técnicas innovadoras sobre la estructura del demostrador:

• Valoración del comportamiento de ondas de alta frecuencia debido a impactos (ondas Lamb) en el desarrollo del Structural Health Monitoring System

• Caracterización dinámica de materiales (micro, meso, macro)

• Técnicas avanzadas de inspección termo gráfica para control de calidad de estructuras complejas altamente integradas así como su gran potencial de uso (sin contacto) durante los ensayos de calificación.

El proyecto Clean Sky/GRA, financiado por la UE, ha supuesto un paso importante en el desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías relacionadas con la utilización de nuevos materiales compuestos multifuncionales en estructuras complejas altamente integradas y nuevos procesos de fabricación y de montaje más eficientes aplicadas a la estructura de una aeronave, reduciendo su impacto medioambiental. En la plataforma Airframe de Clean Sky 2 se da continuidad al proyecto de la Cabina de Material Compuesto, con el objetivo fundamental de elevar el nivel de madurez tecnológica a través de la realización de ensayos en un entorno industrialmente más representativo de la estructura de la cabina.

Airbus Defence and Space and Clean Sky

Airbus Defence and Space is involved in the Clean Sky 2 program in the “Airframe”, “Regional”, “Large Passenger Aircraft” platforms and has participated in the “Green Regional Aircraft” (GRA) program Clean Sky 1. Clean Sky 2 is the continuation of the Clean Sky 1 within the Horizon 2020 of the European Commission and currently one of the most important aeronautical research and development programs in the European Union, involving most of the companies of the aeronautical industry, including SMEs, Universities and Research Institutes.

One of the most significant technology demonstrators “Airframe” ITD is the Structural Composite Cockpit for a transport aircraft. This demonstrator was developed and manufactured in “Green Regional Aircraft” (GRA) ITD during Clean Sky 1 program.

GRA is a platform devoted to researching technological potentialities with positive impact on the environment applied from the production to the operation of an aircraft.

In order to achieve improvements in the environment, the new design of an aircraft requires a greater eco-efficiency in its life cycle which imposes requirements to be incorporated into the design and manufacturing processes:

The activities of Airbus Defence and Space in the Composite Cockpit Demonstrator were focused on 10% weight reductions on primary structure, maintaining or improving the functionalities of the reference structure, and reducing manufacturing and assembly costs. Several technological lines were identified that allowed to meet the eco-efficient criteria set by the project:

• Manufacturing processes of complex structures and integrated in “One Shot”

• Multi-functional stiffened (co-cured) Skins, incorporating dissimilar materials in prepreg

• Flat and curved stiffened Skins in thermoplastics ISC (In Situ Consolidation)

• Feasibility / suitability of roltrusion process for simple shape stiffeners

• Liquid resin infusion (LRI process Out of Outoclave) both for solid laminates and sandwich for primary structure

• Different material & configuration (Fabric and Unidirectional tapes)

In the Clean Sky 1 program, to demonstrate the technological lines described above, two cockpit demonstrators were manufactured to carry out specific tests and to validate the technological maturity of the proposed technologies. One of the two cockpits is being exposed.

During the project, new design techniques, such as “FuLL 3D”, use of new materials and new manufacturing and installation processes have been explored. The monitoring of the assembly process has allowed a recurring cost reduction of more than 15%.

New concepts of simulation tools have also been developed to make predictions about dynamic impacts, vibro-acoustics, SHM (Structural Health Monitoring) developments, or complex failure modes. For this, we have worked on refined FEM (Finite Elements Model) models with high computing rates.

Likewise, during the testing phase of the demonstrator, innovative techniques have been applied on the structure of the demonstrator:

• Assessment of high frequency waves due to impacts (Lamb waves) in the development of the Structural Heal Monitoring System

• Dynamic characterization of materials (micro, meso, macro)

• Advanced thermo-graphic inspection techniques for quality control of highly integrated complex structures as well as their great potential for use (non-contact) during qualification tests

The EU funded Clean Sky / GRA project has been an important step in the development of new technologies related to the use of new multifunctional composite materials in highly integrated complex structures and new more efficient manufacturing and assembly processes applied to the Structure of an aircraft, reducing its environmental impact. The Clean Sky 2 Airframe ITD platform will be the continuation of the Composite Cockpit Project, with the main goal of raising the level of technological maturity through a test campaign in a more representative environment of the structure of the cabin.

Principales proyectosMain ProjectsTecnatom Taurus Robot-based Ultrasonic Inspection Systems: An automatic system designed for the ultrasonic inspection of aeronautical components using water jet through-transmission and/or pulse-echo phased-array techniques.

• TAURUS SINGLE - This systems can perform ultrasonic inspections by means of pulse-echo phased-array technique. For parts with a simple geometry (almost flat or single curvature) and small or medium dimensions, water-jet through transmission technique can be applied using a U-shape yoke mounted on the robot twist.

• TAURUS TWIN - For parts with complex geometry (double curvature) and large dimensions, two robots working in a cooperating mode are proposed to apply through transmission technique. Pulse-echo inspection can be performed simultaneously in two different parts, using both robots independently.

UMI AERONAUTICA es una compañía consolidada dentro del sector aeronautico como proveedor de OEM´s y otras empresas de primer nivel en el montaje de con-juntos y subestructuras aeronauticas, diseño y fabrica-ción de útiles, desarrollo de proyectos I+D y mecanizado de piezas de precisión.

La empresa comienza su andadura en 2006 en Se-villa, España, como resultado de la unión de dos sólidas empresas del sector: Inespasa y Meupe. Muy pronto co-menzó a crecer tanto a nivel nacional como internacio-nal gracias a los diversos proyectos desarrollados con éxito para los clientes más exigentes y sobresalientes del campo aeronáutico. En la actualidad, UMI AERONAU-TICA cuenta con grandes y modernas instalaciones entre las que se incluyen 3 plantas de mecanizado, un cen-tro dedicado a proyectos I+D, una planta para montaje y una planta para procesos finales, un total de 15.000 m2 repartidos en el área de Sevilla (Aeropolis, Umbrete) y Marruecos (Tanger Zona Franca).

UMI AERONAUTICA is a company dedicated to the design and development of tooling projects, R+D projects, the manufacturing of precision machined parts, sub-assemblies and substructures for the Aerospace sector.

The company began its operations in 2006 in Seville (Spain) as the union of two solid companies in the sector, Meupe and Inespasa. It soon started to witness growth on an international level as much as on a national level, thanks to the diverse successful projects undertaken for the most demanding and outstanding Clients in the field. At the present time, UMI AERONAUTICA currently has extensive, modern facilities, which include a centre dedicated to R+D+I projects, 3 machining plants, a surface treatment plant, an assembly plant and which total a surface area over 18,000 m2 located in the Aerópolis Business Park, Seville area and Tanger Free Zone.
