MORE ADDITIONS TO THE PABST MANSION STAFF...

Over the course of the last year, a number of original pieces to the Pabst Mansion’s

collection have returned to the house after an absence of over one-hundred and ten years. We cannot thank the descendants of Captain and Mrs. Pabst enough for their generosity and forethought in sharing these objects with us and our guests, allowing them to once again be beautifully displayed in the atmosphere for which they were originally chosen.

It is almost unheard of for a house museum created some seventy years after the family departed to have so many original objects return. Two of my favorite often-repeated comments from our visitors are that “the mansion feels like a home” and “we really can feel the Pabsts presence in this house”. The welcoming feeling that one derives from a place is created by the entire atmosphere and it is indeed palpable to those who enjoy their tours here.

Most recently, Joyce and Nick Pabst have donated not only an original painting to our collection, but also a 19th century cast brass desk set that once sat upon (and now does again) the boys’ library desk that we reacquired over five years ago. The painting is of a Hussar and his horse by Guido Sigriste (1864-1915), painted in 1895. Still in its original frame, Sigriste’s Hussar will once again be placed in the Music Room where it originally hung in the 1890s. Purchased from Milwaukee’s great 19th century art dealer, Henry Reinhardt, Hussar was a favorite of Frederick Pabst, Jr., who inherited the painting from his father’s estate. Fred, Jr. placed the painting near his favorite chair in his Oconomowoc home, where he would see it every evening when he sat down to enjoy the newspaper. We are thrilled to have it back at the Pabst Mansion!

In April we welcomed two new staff members to the Pabst Mansion team, Janet Henning and Dana Hansen. Janet has been engaged to serve as the organization’s Controller, responsible for maintaining the Mansion’s financial records. Prior to coming to the Mansion Janet has worked in similar capacities at Fortune 500 companies such as Metavante, Northwestern Mutual and MMAC in addition to running her own marketing and finance business. When not working, Janet enjoys skiing, hiking, and playing tennis as well as spending time with her husband and two sons.

Dana Hansen, who comes to us from her most recent position as Site Manager for Brew City MKE, will now serve as the Mansion’s Event and Gift Shop Manager. As a graduate from the UW-Milwaukee/Museum Studies Graduate Program, Dana will utilize her background to coordinate gift shop products, displays and events that present the Mansion in its best light as well as protect the integrity of the museum. Dana considers herself infinitely lucky to be joining the Pabst Mansion so she can continue to show her love of Milwaukee history.

Exciting Treasures are Welcomed Home by john c. eastberg

On April 9th, Lorna Pabst Acosta traveled to Milwaukee so that she could attend the uncrating of the Adolf Schreyer painting that she recently donated to us. Her heartfelt remarks touched all of us and we were so grateful that she could witness how much joy she gave to us by sharing this meaningful painting. She is pictured with Keith Raddatz, art conservator, who will undertake the restoration of the Schreyer later this year.
