emotion, social needs, or something else? PRESSURE - We feel pressure when the doctor gives us the bad news, "Lose 50 pounds or die," or the boss says, "Improve your performance or you are out of here!" The problem with pressure as a motivator is that it does not last. When the pressure subsides or the problem is fixed, your motivation comes to an end. All seems right with the world and you can resume life as usual, back into the rut! PERSPECTIVE - Perspective comes when you become able to see the big picture, or when you are deeply inspired by a challenging vision or purpose. Perspective takes hold when you realize that you are wasting your potential and squandering promising opportunities that have come your way. We don't have to wait until we suddenly receive motivation from pain, pressure or perspective. As the Bible reminds us, "If you wait for perfect conditions, you'll never get anything done" (Ecclesiastes 11:4). Here are four steps for breaking out of a rut: 1. Assume responsibility for your own life: Refuse to be an Excuser (rationalizing your failures) or an Accuser
(blaming others for your failures). Instead, be a Chooser and choose to break out of the rut you find yourself in. Start exercising, increase the distance, run a race, accept a challenge.
2. Believe you can: Stop saying I can't, and start saying I can. When you do, you may be surprised to discover that you truly can.
3. Clarify what you really want: Write down specifically how you would like to change, what goals you would like to achieve. Is there a marathon in the future?
4. Do not wait for ideal circumstances: Stop saying, "I will do it one of these days, when things settle down." Do it now! "One of these days" is really NONE of these days.
Anthony Campolo says, "What you commit yourself to will change what you are and make you into a completely different person. The future conditions you, not the past. Therefore, the questions are "What are your commitments? Where are you going? What are you going to become?" Show me somebody who hasn't decided, and I'll show you somebody who is facing "identity theft!"
This March brings the running of the 34th annual Azalea Trail Run. For many, this is the only organized "race" event in which they participate. For some, it is the first opportunity to participate in a race "along side" world class competition. For many, this will be their first 10K effort or perhaps their first race of any distance. Regardless, it is an event that gets us out of the hum-drum of a typical Saturday morning. It is easy to get stuck in a rut with our running and walking; the same old courses at the same old speed produces the same old results. We can become too comfortable because the routine is so familiar and change can be so difficult. Settling into a rut is dangerous, however; humorist Will Rogers used to say, "Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there!" When you find yourself stuck in such a rut, what does it take to get you moving to the next level? For the majority of people, there are three common motivators for bringing about change, whether they like it or not: PAIN - Pain in any of its many forms can motivate us to seek change. Often it is not seeing the light that gets us moving, but feeling the heat. Is it related to health,
RUT OR STRUT? YOU DECIDE

Welcome to the crusade against child abuse. We
are a group of believers. We believe that it is
possible to break the chains of abuse with the
right educational programs, the right awareness
campaigns, stricter abuse laws, the right support
for those who fight abuse and help rehabilitate
the victims of abuse. And most of all we believe
in hope and love....which is what every victim of
child abuse deserves.
It is our belief that small actions can make a big
difference, especially in the lives of our most
vulnerable citizens, the children. We believe that
with a little effort ordinary people can produce
super heroic results. Based on our motto that
abused children need a superhero, the Superhero
Foundation conducts "SUPERHERO" runs,
encouraging participants to run, walk or jog
dressed as their favorite superhero.
The Superhero Foundation of Mobile (SHFM) is
a non-profit organization established to raise
awareness of the fight against child abuse and to
provide support to local agencies that assist in
the prevention of child abuse and treat victims.
The Superhero Foundation began in Austin, TX
in 2008 and, as of today, has chapters in
Pittsburg, PA; Richmond, VA; and most recently
here in Mobile.
The latest figures show that there are
approximately 3 million reports of child abuse
made each year. Of these reported cases,
approximately 1500 result in fatalities - that's 4
children who die each day as a result of child
abuse.
Sadly, these statistics represent only the reported
cases and it is believed that the actual number of
incidents of abuse is much, much higher.
Additionally, it is believed that at least 96% of
children who suffer at the hands of abuse are
likely to experience a recurrence of abuse.
We need to raise the awareness of the all-too-
frequent instances of child abuse in order to see
it stopped. By supporting the Superhero
Foundation, you are helping to raise the
awareness needed to break the cycle.
In April of 2007, the Center for Business and
Economic Research at the University of
Alabama reported that the total cost of child
abuse in Alabama is 520 million dollars
annually. We are working to raise awareness of
the child abuse problem in Alabama.
The SHFM has partnered with the Port City
Pacers for the 2011 Azalea Train Run, which has
been a Mobile fixture for over 30 years. Last
year the ATR had 6000 participants from 29
states and 7 countries. This year the Port City
Pacers has selected the Superhero Foundations of
Mobile as the charitable organization to benefit
from the proceeds of the 2011 ATR. The SHFM
has selected Saint Mary's Home in Mobile to be
this year's beneficiary.
Founded as an orphanage in 1838, Saint Mary's
Home serves as the first and oldest
residential treatment facility for children in
Alabama. Saint Mary's Home continues to care
for children who have been abused, abandoned
or neglected by their families.
Saint Mary's Home has offered shelter and
nurturing care to children who had and still have
nowhere else to turn for help. Our children
continue to rely on the kindness of others, not
only to meet their daily needs but to provide
them with the loving guidance to heal and to
grow into productive members of our
community.

Ragnar Del-Sol by Kenny Pfeiffer
In August of 2009 I had the privilege of running Hood to Coast with Team Spiridon. Hood to Coast, a
200 mile relay race covering most of the state of Oregon, was my first experience running an overnight
relay race and proved to be a very unique experience. It was a once in a lifetime type of race…or so I
thought.
In 2010, we began tossing around the idea of doing another relay event. We decided on a relay put on by
Ragnar, a company that specializes in producing these types of races. The race we chose, Ragnar Del-Sol,
took place in Arizona, running from Wickenburg to Tempe. It totaled 197.3 miles through desert,
mountains, subdivisions, and industrial areas, as well as highly populated cities. Most of this running was
done on paved roads but there were some legs run off-road on trails which can only be described using
some choice words and expletives. At least that’s how they were described as the runners were running
them.
For those unfamiliar with these long distance relay races, the course is divided into 36 total legs. There
are no fixed distances for these legs. In fact, most times the exchange points are placed wherever there is
a parking lot, dirt lot, or whatever is suitable for parking a multitude of vans. Most teams consist of 12
runners (there are some crazy ultra teams that do the whole race with a team of only 6). Each of the
runners runs 3 legs each. The race consists of running, riding in a van, eating whatever foods you can fit
into a small styrofoam cooler, and trying to rest whenever possible (very difficult when crammed into a
minivan with 5 other sweaty, nasty runners).
This year, Team Spiridon took a coed team made up of the following runners: (Van 1) Justin Parker,
Lauren Grant, Kenny Pfeiffer, Alice Parker, Jon Bowie, Amy Huff, (Van 2) Courtney Fox, Ray Hickman,
Rebecca Massie, Ali Stevenson, Daniel Gardner, & Samantha Gardner. We ended up finishing as the 2nd
coed team and the 5th overall team out of 306 teams that finished the race. Along the way, friendships
were made or strengthened (you tend to form pretty tight bonds with people that you ride in a van with for
24 straight hours…especially when un-showered), sleep deprivation was in full effect, inside jokes were a
plenty, and after the race many celebratory beers were consumed.
If you ever get the chance, I would highly recommend doing Ragnar Del-Sol or any other overnight relay
race that you can find. This type of race presents a truly unique race experience unlike anything we have
on a local level. Just be sure to go with people who mesh well together and prepare to have fun.

Corporate Cup
By Will Wright
CORPORATE CUP UPDATE We have completed 12 races, but at this writing the results of the Joe Cain 5K are not yet available. For the first time in the last seven years the SEEDS 5K and the Joe Cain Run fell on the same weekend with one being on Saturday and the other on Sunday. This, along with bad weather leading into the Saturday event, resulted in the lowest participation we have ever had at a race. Only 21 Corporate Cup runners ran for their teams. Since the best nine of the 15 races are used to determine final standings, many teams will omit this one! Our average runners per race dropped from 119 to 110 after SEEDS, but several popular races coming up including the Azalea Trail 10K should move our average back up. Standings based on all 11 races along with Participation Leaders are as follows: DIVISION I 1. Bombers 2. Port City Pacers 3. Team PE -- Participation Leader 4. Bay Area Runners 5. CHARR DIVISION II 1. Spring Hill Baptist Church 2. Sheriffs -- Participation Leader 3. Univ of South Ala 4. Evonik 5. All Sts Episc Church
DIVISION III 1. Mobile Police -- Participation Leader 2. Hargrove 3. PEI (Precision Engineering) 4. The SSI Group 5. Shipbuilders DIVISION IV 1. Dupont 2. CPSI -- Participation Leader 3. Dayspring Baptist 4. Providence 5. Standard Furniture DIVISION V 1. Bodies By Cindy -- Participation Leader 2. White-Spunner 3. Crimson Shipping 4. Automotive Computing 5. Amerprise Financial Services 6. Airbus 7. BALEU/ERA 8. CPA's The last three races along with finishing line duties (passing out of Corp Cup finishers' cards) are as follows: 13. Azalea Trail Run - Team Captains responsible 14. Old Mobile 8K - April 9 - Bodies by Cindy 15. Do It In the Bush 5K - May 14 - All Saints
Please note the Corporate Cup Standings and Division Results are posted on the Port City Pacers web site. Go to the PCP
home site and click on Corporate Cup.

Your legs can save lives....
Runners don’t just run to run. We all
have some type of goal in mind.
Better health, better time, time with
friends and/or helping others.
If you are looking to add a new
dynamic to your run to keep you
going, why not help our local
children being treated by St. Jude
Children’s Research Hospital. This
May, for a second year, local runners
will challenge themselves for St. Jude
with a 391 mile relay. The run starts
in Memphis on May 11 and ends in
Mobile on May 14. May 10 is a
travel day and a chance for you to
tour St. Jude’s Research Hospital.
You don’t have to be fast and you
don’t have to run marathons to
participate. Runners are split into
two teams and each runner runs three
to six miles at a time. In between
runs, runners enjoy a nap or a good
meal in the Memphis to Mobile
motor homes.
Can’t commit…you can still help.
The 2nd
Annual Running for St. Jude
5k will be Sunday, April 10 at
Bellingrath Gardens. It is a new
course along Rebel Road, flat and
fast, a perfect place to push for a PR.
