Odyssey of the Mind
Congratulations to Pacetti Bay Odyssey of the Mind teams! Three teams
competed in the Manatee region Odyssey of the Mind Tournament on
March 4th. Students participating in Problem 5 (Fins, Furs, Feathers, and
Friends) earned 3rd place medals. Students in Problem 2 (Something Fishy)
and Problem 3 (Aesop Gone Viral) earned 1st place and will be representing
Manatee Region at the State Tournament at UCF in Orlando on April 9th.
Lost and Found
We are only more than halfway through the quarter after Christmas
break and already the lost and found buckets are overflowing. Parents if
your child has lost a lunch box or jacket please encourage them to come
to the clinic to look for their lost items. Parents you are welcome to take
a look also; the clinic is open Mon-Fri 7:30am-3:00pm. All items not
picked up will be donated at the end of this 9 week quarter.
Because there has been such an influx of lost and found items, I am en-
couraging you to put your child’s name on their jackets and lunch box-
es. Items that have names will find their rightful owners. Thank you so
much for help in this matter.
Results Are In!!
The results are in! In Research III, after Mrs. Freeman's 8th grad-
ers researched the pros and cons of obtaining a bachelor's degree,
discovered alternative jobs and training after high school, and
conducted a Socratic Seminar to sway each other of their views,
the votes tallied up to reveal that 68% of students believed
"Everyone should go to College" while 32% believed that "Not
Everyone should go to college" to achieve success and fulfill-
ment in life.

Blue Ribbons in Ms. Thompson’s LA class
The students in Thompson’s Language Arts are encouraged to get blue ribbons
on Study Island. This program is free to use and the operations mirror the opera-
tions that are used on computer based FSA Reading Assessment. Each week,
Ms. Thompson rewards students for their blue ribbons. (1-4 Ribbons = jolly
rancher, 5-8 Ribbons = jolly rancher/smarties, 9+ blue ribbons = jolly rancher/
smarties/blow-pop) The student is acknowledged and given a paw to place on
the blue ribbon poster.

Pacetti Bay Paracords!
Students in the InD Room at Pacetti Bay Middle School are learn-
ing to make bracelets and keychains with paracord material. This
activity is great for teaching fine motor skills, hand-eye coordina-
tion and teamwork as it takes two people to make each one. In an
effort to help support our program, we want to make paracord
bracelets and keychains with our school colors that will be for sale.
All of the materials are available at our local Michael’s store.
Please contact Mr. De Vos if you’d like to donate material or a gift
card at ([email protected]) .
8th Graders Learn about Career Planning
On March 11, our school counselors spent the day in 8th grade US
History classes to talk with the students about a wonderful new
resource that is available for College and Career Exploration: My
Career Shines. Under the umbrella of Florida Shines and according
to their website, “My Career Shines is a comprehensive education
and career planning system that will help you succeed in the in-
creasingly competitive global economy. You will learn about your-
self, discover the many options and opportunities for your future,
and gain access to the information and tools to achieve your
goals.” Students each created a personal account that will be avail-
able to him/her throughout their four years of high school. They
began by navigating through the different elements of the website
and completing the first of two career interest inventories. Please
ask your student to share with you what he/she learned, and to
show you the website so that you can work together to make sure it
is a valuable and useful resource for them in the future! Visit My
Career Shines at www.mycareershines.org.
PBMS Band
The Pacetti Bay Middle School Band conducted by Lee Sellers recently
performed at the Florida Bandmasters Association District 21 Music Perfor-
mance Assessment. The ensemble earned superior ratings from all four
adjudicators at the event. The superior rating can be compared to the letter
grade of “A.” Mr. Sellers and the Pacetti Bay community are proud of this
accomplishment and congratulate the hard working students of the band.
During the event, the students performed three prepared selections for adju-
dication in a concert-like setting. After the concert portion, the band per-
formed two selections they had not seen before for the “sightreading” as-
sessment.
The Music Performance Assessments (MPAs) provide an opportunity for
authentic assessment of music students and their teachers. Ensembles are
graded against a pre-set standard of musical excellence. Adjudicators are
music teachers who have earned high ratings at MPAs themselves and have
completed certification requirements provided by their component organiza-
tion (Band, Chorus, Orchestra). The Pacetti Bay bands are now preparing
for their spring concerts. More information can be found on their web-
site: http://teachers.stjohns.k12.fl.us/sellers-d/
