in the beginning12 to 6months

Your wedding day will likely be the mostmemorable day of your life. But in order tomake your big day just as you’ve alwaysimagined, you will want to start planninganywhere from six months to a year ormore in advance. Doing so will also helpensure that both you and your guests areable to relax enough to enjoy the celebra-tion of your magical day.

Before you begin planning, you maywant to remember two things: Don’t panicif you fall behind schedule and don’t getcaught up in trying to make things tooperfect. Instead, try to enjoy the process ofplanning with your future spouse and re-member the wonderful things about himor her, which made you want to marrythem in the first place.

To do this, you may want to create gamesaround wedding preparations and settingaside time each month anniversary beforethe wedding and do something incrediblyspecial as a couple such as a romantic din-ner or a bike ride. It can be a lot of fun and it can be a real intimacy builder at thesame time.

ESTABLISHING A BUDGETThe first and most important thing you

will want to do is establish your budget. This is crucial as expenses often add upquickly and without notice.

You may want to try keeping track of allexpenses and organizing your budget usinga spreadsheet program such as MicrosoftExcel.

Many brides start out with a budget inthe beginning but then don’t continue tokeep track of expenses. As a result, thebrides often run out of money and end upskimping on more important items at thelast minute. A little organization can helpyou avoid this pitfall.

Once you and your partner have decidedhow much money you have and are goingto spend, you should itemize and decidewhat percentage you want to spend oneach aspect of the wedding. You may wantto spend a large proportion on a grand cer-emony while your partner may have his orher heart set on an exorbitant spread offood and drinks. You will both want to be

aware of each other’s priorities beforebooking any vendors in order to avoid anypotential conflict.

CHOOSING A LOCATIONBooking a location for your wedding

should also be done in the beginning of theplanning stage – especially if you plan on asummer wedding. The northwest region ofWashington state and lower mainlandBritish Columbia have some incrediblevenues at competitive prices if you comparethem to venues of similar size and locationin larger metropolitan areas. You may optfor a seaside wedding on a cliff overlookingPuget Sound, in a vineyard overlooking therolling hills of Whatcom or Skagit coun-ties, in a historic church, a luxurious yachtor an elegant hall. Either way, there are

only so many weekends in a year and pop-ular venues are often booked as much as ayear in advance, so if you have an absolutelocation in mind, book it as soon as possi-ble. You will also want to ask about the fa-cility’s catering and liquor policies, theirpolicy on photography and if they providea coordinator for the event.

WEDDING PLANNERS The beginning is also the time to seek

expert advice. Many people feel that hiringa wedding planner is an unnecessary, addedexpense, but then end up hiring one towardthe end anyway.

Hiring a skilled wedding planner canoften guarantee paying a fair retail price oreven a lower price for vendors. Weddingplanners are experts in their field and have

time to research various vendors and thedetails of their contracts. In addition, some, with their pre-established connections tovendors, are able to negotiate special dis-counts you may not otherwise receive.

You may think that you can save moneyby managing all the details of your wed-ding yourself or with the help of friendsand family. In the end, this might leave youand your family frazzled and exhaustedduring the days before and on your big day.You probably won’t be able to relax if you’rethe one responsible for making sure all theloose ends are tied the day of the ceremony.

A wedding planner, on the other hand, can guide the photographer around, coor-dinate with various vendors and ensureeverything runs smoothly so you and yourfamily can relax and enjoy the celebration.

They can also help you stay within yourbudget and keep you on schedule the dayof your wedding so as to avoid the exorbi-tant overtime fees many vendors charge.

If your wedding budget is at least$10,000, if you have more than 100 guests,or if you can’t spare 12 hours per week toplan your wedding, you may want to con-sider hiring a wedding planner. Whenchoosing a consultant, look for experiencein budgeting, accounting, event planning, catering and other wedding-related as-pects. Hiring a consultant early in theprocess is likely to save you more money, but many planners are also available foremergency coordinating the day of yourwedding. Most planners are also availablefor an hourly rate or offer a special packageto help you find the most cost-effective

vendors to suite your taste. If you plan on hiring a consultant for one

day only, be sure to give them at least twoto six weeks notice, as they might bebooked with other events.

Questions for a wedding coordinator:• Will you be designing the overall theme ofthe wedding or help to execute the schedule?• Do you accept commissions or kickbacks fromthe professional vendors you refer?• How will you bill at the end of the event? • Will you personally attend the wedding?• What is your refund policy in case of cancellation?

THE PERFECT DRESS You may search all parts of the region for

your perfect dress. And when you find it,you will know it. Start your search bychecking out bridal magazines and get afeel for what appeals to you. Weddingshows are also a great source of inspirationas well as valuable contacts so you maywant to look at the list of regional weddingevents in the back of this book. Whileyou’re at it, bring a notebook to write downcontact information about the vendors youmeet as they could come in handy. Also, many bridal shows offer drawings forprizes that could wholly compensate forthe price of admission.

Not only willit guarantee that particular artist but willalso be one less thing to worry about in theweeks prior to your wedding. Make sureyou check references and ensure the ven-dor’s taste and style matches your own.

You will also want to find out how in-volved the DJ or band will be in the cere-mony. Will they cue you on when to cutthe cake or announce the first dance? Also, how flexible are they in playing requests? Finally, get everything in writing, includ-ing hours, deposits, overtime fees andplaylists and then pay for it with a creditcard so you have it on record.

Questions for the DJ:• What is your experience/training?• Will you also emcee the reception?• Do you also provide lighting and soundequipment?

will do. When choosing an MC, the couple

should first reflect the atmosphere they arehoping to create. Also, be clear about whatyou expect from him or her, especially inregards to the jokes he intends to use. Youneed only go on the internet to go overother MC speeches to realize how easily anembarrassing one can occur.

Finally, establish an agenda for the re-ception. Generally, the MC will welcomethe guests and ask them to rise as the wed-ding party makes their entrance. This isusually followed by a toast to the new cou-ple, a blessing, an introduction to the headtable, cake cutting and toast by the bridalparty’s friends or family.

THE WEDDING MCThe master of ceremonies is one of the

most important roles of all. The MC is re-sponsible for ensuring the reception un-folds in the manner in which it is plannedand, like most things, the more preparedthe emcee is, the better the job he or she

Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a lotto make your wedding food memorable –just don’t skimp on the quality or quantity.

If catering is in your budget, you shouldstart your search for a caterer early in theprocess. Ask for recommendations fromfriends, wedding planners, chefs or othersin the industry.

Once you decide on a minimum of twopotential caterers, you will want to ask anumber of questions to ensure their styleand taste matches your own.

Of course, you should also keep in mindthe tastes of your most important guests.Get a sample of the palettes of your mostimportant guests by bringing them alongfor a menu tasting and ask about thecaterer’s policy on leftovers.

You may also want to select a caterer thatis flexible enough to incorporate your owntastes into the menu. Keep in mind sea-sonal availability of local produce and theclient’s taste including options for vegetar-ians, vegans, and people with food allergies.

If catering is not within your budget, youmay want to have your ceremony in theearly afternoon after people have eatenlunch. If you can’t afford to cater, just havecake and mints instead.

Questions for the caterer:• How involved will you be on the day of thewedding?• Will you provide linens, dishes or glassware? • Will you cue the band or tell you when tocut the cake? (If not, hiring a day-of coordinator might be helpful.)• Will you package leftovers to be takenhome?

THE CAKEThe wedding cake is usually a three-

tiered sponge cake but, as the cake needsto be dense and strong enough to supporteach of the layers – and the centerpiece ontop – finding a delicious, yet functionalcake can be difficult. Not to worry, several

vendors are sure to pass the test. Tradition-ally the wedding cake is white with buttercream frosting, but many couples are nowopting for chocolate, strawberry or carrotvarieties. ETIQUETTE Many people worry about the intricacies

of wedding etiquette. There are the stead-fast traditions of tossing the bouquet andseating parents in the front row, as well asthe more nebulous traditions of whichparty pays for what.

The most important etiquette, however,is simply being considerate of your friendsand family. Keeping your most importantguests in mind when you plan your wed-ding will likely elicit positive memories ofyour wedding in the future. When makinga gift registry, for example, be sure tochoose a store with items in a price rangeeveryone will be able to afford ($50 to$150 is the standard price range). It’s alsoin good etiquette to keep your bridesmaids’budgets and body types in mind whenchoosing the dresses.

The best thing you can do is just enjoythe ability to design your wedding the wayyou want it. And just because you’ve neverseen it done doesn’t mean you shouldn’t doit. Weddings tend to get generic and runof the mill. Try to find things to make ityour own.

OFFICIANTSThe most important part of your wed-

ding is the part where you and your futurespouse exchange your vows of love and loy-

alty. It will also set the tone for the rest ofyour ceremony. Depending on your reli-gious beliefs, you may either want to writeyour own vows, modify traditional weddingvows or have an officiant guide you in whatto do and say.

Many couples have opted to modify tra-ditional vows to make their ceremony morepersonal or meaningful. Although it can beoverwhelming and intimidating, it can alsobe a phenomenally creative opportunity. And there are officiants out there that willwalk you through the steps one at a timein a way that makes it fun and meaningful.

If you choose to write your own vows, you might want to make a list of words todescribe your spouse-to-be, write downsong lyrics or poetry or research traditionsof your own ethnic heritage.

You may also want to consider incorpo-rating friends, family and children into theceremony. One way to do this is to inviteyour guests to share their blessings vocallyduring the ceremony or you could create ablessings basket so guests can write wordsof good will. In the end, you’ll have a bas-ket filled with blessings of love from fam-ily and friends. Your guests will feelimportant in doing so as well.

Whatever you decide, though, it will beimportant to find an officiant who is in linewith your own religious or spiritual beliefsand personal style.

PHOTOGRAPHYThe photographs of your wedding will

last long after the ceremony is over. Thatsaid, it is one area where you should try notto cut corners. It might be tempting to hireyour friend who takes “really good pictures”but hiring a professional will likely have abetter outcome (and it will give your frienda chance to enjoy the wedding).

during busy season, you should start yoursearch as soon as you make your engage-ment. If you’re working with a smallbudget, some photographers will shoot thewedding and give you the negatives to de-velop as you wish. Others charge less forthe actual photography and a piece rate forenlargements. Either way, you should askpotential candidates about their copyrightpolicies and find out how much theycharge for prints before signing any con-tracts. You should also ask if the photog-rapher works with assistants and if thoseassistants are going to be taking photos. Itis most important to be photographed bythe person you meet with and the person-ality that you approve. You will also want tomake sure the photographer’s stylematches your own. Viewing the photogra-pher’s portfolio or their web site will give asense of their particular slant or ‘eye.’ If youare not sure what type of photographicstyle you want, try browsing several wed-ding magazines and note what type ofphotograph appeals to you.

Once you determine who you want tophotograph your wedding, you should taketime to discuss the details with the pho-tographer. You should also invite the pho-tographer to the wedding rehearsal as thiswill keep your images consistent and allowyour guests time to warm up to them.

Questions for the photographer:• Will you personally be photographing the wedding?• Will you be using black and white?• What is your policy on reprints or enlargements?• Is there an overtime charge?

With four to six months left until thewedding, you are probably in the middle offull-on planning and for most brides, youare counting down the days. Major plan-ning is now underway and it is an optimaltime to tie up as many loose ends as possi-ble in order to avoid last-minute panick-ing. If you haven’t yet, you should beginordering invitations, planning your honey-moon and shopping for the perfect ring.

ORDERING INVITATIONSThis is one area where you might think

you can save money by opting to makeyour own invitations. Be warned though, that making your own invitations is notonly incredibly time consuming, but canalso cost you more money than havingthem done professionally.

You may want to visit a cozybed and breakfast in the San Juan Islands,or embark on an adventurous hiking tripto one of the many natural hot springs inthe Olympic Peninsula or the Canadianwilderness. Or maybe you want to head toa far-away, tropical destination such as Ja-maica or the Cayman Islands. If you antic-ipate accommodations and activities, however, you may want to consider a travelagent. ring on the left hand began in ancientEgypt. There, it was believed the circle rep-resented a continuing and eternal bondand the left “ring” finger connected directlyto the heart by a vein.

Depending on your style and budget, onebride’s perfect ring is likely quite differentfrom another. Many brides opt for theclassic diamond ring but you may wantsomething different. Some couples evenget wedding ring tattoos on their left hand.Keep in mind, though, in case of the un-thinkable, laser surgery removal can bevery costly - and painful.

Start your search for the perfect ring fourto six months away to ensure adequatetime for fitting. If you miss this deadline, however, many jewelers will rent you a“loaner ring” for your wedding day. Youshould also research the various types ofmetal and finishes in a ring as some wearlonger than others. Either way, you shouldtake time to decide what is the right ringfor you. After all, you’ll most likely wear itthe rest of your life.

Call your local newspaper and ask aboutthe appropriate format for sending your

For ideas, lookthrough magazines and not just bridal onesand talk to your hairstylist about what theythink might look good. If you don’t like aparticular style, you will have time to goback to the drawing board instead of beingstuck with a mess the day of your wedding.

REHEARSAL DINNER RESERVATIONEvery wedding needs a rehearsal to allow

all guests to get acquainted with everyoneinvolved. You should make your reserva-tions at least three weeks in advance for adining atmosphere that is relaxed and inti-mate enough to serve as an icebreaker. Tra-ditional etiquette dictates that you inviteall those who attended the rehearsal, in-cluding the photographer. Many peopleask if they must feed the photographer andwhile the answer is technically no, doing sois not only a nice gesture, but will make thephotographer feel more included and allowattendants to warm up to him or her.

Ifyou are moving into a new house together, you may want to begin moving your be-longings at this time. While this is not amust, it will make for one less task youhave to complete when you arrive homefrom the honeymoon.

In the final week, you’ll want to reviewyour arrangements with your vendors andgive the final guest count to the receptionfacility and caterer. If you have hired awedding planner, he or she will most likelydo this, depending on the type of planningpackage you specified. You will also wantto arrange for all name and addresschanges on personal accounts, identifica-tion cards and policies and start packingyour bags for the honeymoon. Then getsome rest and spend some time with yourfamily and friends.

Your big day is finally here. You’vebeen planning for months and monthsand the fruits of your labor are payingoff. When you get ready, make sure youhave a number of friends and family atarm’s reach to help you with small buttime consuming tasks such as calling theflorist or photographer just to make surethey are on schedule. This is also wherehiring a day-of wedding planner wouldcome in handy.

You will still want to make sure youleave yourself enough time to dress, bathe and get enough sleep the night be-fore. If that isn’t possible, however, takecare of that sleepy look by applying some

concealer underneath your eyes alongwith a hefty coat of mascara to give themthe appearance of being open and alert.Using a dark red lip liner to color in yourlips before applying your usual lipstickwill also ensure your lip color lasts all dayand that your lips show well in photo-graphs. After all, you may not have an-other excuse to wear bright red lipstickfor some time. Having some eye dropson hand might also be helpful.

But most of all, try to enjoy the dayand don’t expect perfection. Your guestswill have the best possible time only ifyou are having your best possible time.

Congratulations!

your wedding day!Your big day!
