NEWS FROM THE PACIFIC DIVISION2003 NHRA Pacific Division Jr. Championship Series

The 2003 Pacific Division Jr. Champi-onship Series will consist of seven races ineach of two regions within the division –North and South.

Regional champions will be determinedby counting the best six of eight events.Only two of the six events may be from outof the racer’s home region. A racer can onlyclaim points from his or her first eight races.A racer will claim his or her home region athis or her first event of the season. Racerswho do not wish to claim the region of theirfirst race must declare so, in writing, on thetop of the tech card top at that first race.

The division championship will bedetermined at a runoff among the toppoints earners from each region in eachage bracket at the Automobile Club ofSouthern California NHRA Finals atPomona Raceway, Nov. 6-9. Divisionchampionships will be awarded for agegroups as follows: 8-9, 10-12, 13-14, 15-17.

Wally trophies will be awarded to thechampions of each age bracket at eachof the events. Trophies will be awarded tothe runners-up and semifinalists of eachevent.

The four Pacific Division championswill receive a Gold Card, jacket, twotickets to the banquet, and a Wallytrophy. The four runners-up will receive ajacket and plaque. The third- throughfifth-place finishers will receive a plaque.The champions and runners-up willreceive their awards at the 2003 divisionawards banquet in December in LasVegas; each will be offered two compli-mentary tickets. The third- throughfifth-place finishers will receive theirplaques in the mail.

Track opera-tors and Jr. coordinators areasked to mark that date ontheir calendar. Roster formsand event entry forms will besent to each track by theNHRA National Field Officeseveral weeks before thedeadline. Once again, eachtrack will able to send threeteams of 10 racers.

SPORTSMAN GRADING SYSTEMDue to the growing numbers of contestants, constraints on pit space, and scheduling time, a certain criteria must be met before

a contestant enters an NHRA national event. The NHRA grading system determines who gains entry to the national events and,subsequently, rewards national event aspirants who support divisional activity.

A driver receives one (1) grading point for attending a divisional NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series or National Open event.The grading points earned in either the previous year or the current year (whichever is greater) stand as the driver's "grade."

Provisional entries: 1) A contestant with a valid NHRA Gold, Silver, orBronze Card will be guaranteed entry to any national event. 2) Thedefending event champion will be guaranteed entry to the event he/shewon. For example, last year's Super Gas winner at the Finals would beguaranteed entry into 2003's Finals (entry would not be guaranteed to anyother event, however). 3) A former national champion (Pro or Sportsman)will be guaranteed entry to any national event. 4) A Professional driver whoearns top 20 status in the current or previous season will be guaranteed aSportsman entry to any national event. 5) Owner credits may be awardedin cases involving a driver change from one season to the next (contestantmust receive approval from their division director). 6) A contestant in thetop 20 and still in contention for a possible top 10 year-end position will beguaranteed entry to any of the final four national events of the season(Chicago 2, Dallas, Las Vegas 2, and Pomona 2). These policies do notexcuse the contestant from any late fees, gate entry fees, or insurance sur-charges. For example, if a Gold Card holder shows up at the gate for anevent, the $75 late fee, $75 gate fee, and $40 insurance fee will still beapplicable.

To accommodate certain hardship cases or a former racer's return toactive competition, an averaging system has been developed. Theaverage grade is calculated by adding the racer's grading points from threeprevious years and dividing them by three. For example, for a racer who

ran one division event in 2002, none in 2001, and five in 2000, his gradewould be determined by adding the number of events attended in thosethree years (1 + 0 + 5 = 6) and dividing the total by three, which wouldequal to a grade of 2A (the "A" indicating the averaging calculation).

To accommodate foreign contestants, grading points will be issued forparticipation in select foreign events. Those events are the FIA EuropeanChampionship, Australian Drag Racing Championship, Nordic Super CupChampionship, and Japan Drag Racing Association Championship. Eachentry application must include a written confirmation from the host countrysanctioning organization verifying participation in its series.

A contestant competing in one category at some events and anothercategory at others should notify the division director of the situation so thatall grading points are awarded. Similarly, if a contestant competes at anNHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event outside his/her division, it is thecontestant's responsibility to make sure that grading points for all eventsattended are awarded.

Division directors handle the administration of the grading system.Contestants make their request for national event entry forms for the yearby filling out the National Event Request Form (NERF) and returning it tothe division director, who "grades" the contestant based on the criteria out-lined above.
