BOOKS, ARTICLES AND CHAPTERS

This bibliography covers books, articles and chapters which have appeared in 1978 and the early part of 1979, with some of earlier date sighted too late for inclusion previously. The book section includes some works of restricted availability, but excludes official publications, except for a small num ber of readily obtainable reference books. Works of fiction are also usually om itted, unless they are considered likely to be of special interest to Pacific historians. To reduce annotations to a minimum, articles and chapters have been classified by geographical area, unless the theme covers more than one island group. In this case they will be found under a subject heading. An attem pt has been made to supply complete and accurate bibliographical details of books and articles, based on personal exam ination, but this is not always possible if the work has been published outside Australia. In addition, the effects of financial cuts on library purchasing in this country have begun to result in an as yet small bu t nonetheless significant decrease in the availability of many new scholarly books and journals, particularly those from overseas. Inform ation on newly-published, articles and books, especially material prin ted in the Pacific Islands and Papua New Guinea, or written in Pacific Island languages would be welcomed.
