Selection
Product Overview
TYPE AND SIZE – Select the best type of valve for the intended service (gate, globe, or check). Gate and globe valves are available with
a selection of wedge or disc and body configurations for different services. Valves may be sized to match existing lines, but they shouldalso be sized according to flow conditions for maximum service life.
RATINGS – Valves must only be used in design conditions within the appropriate ANSI pressure-temperature ratings for valve class
rating and body/bonnet material (see Technical Data section).
TEMPERATURE LIMITATIONS – Only use valves within the temperature limitations of their construction. Temperature limitations ofbody/bonnet materials, trim, bolting and packing and gaskets must all be considered. Special construction for extended service temperatures
are available on application.
MATERIAL AND SERVICE – Pressure Seal valves are available in a variety of body/bonnet materials and trims. Specified materials
should be compatible with the service.
1. Gate valves are normally used for on-off service. They are not recommended for throttling service.
2. Gate valves are normally installed in horizontal pipe runs with the valve stem vertically up. They can also be installed in vertical or
horizontal pipe runs with the valve stem other than vertical, but special construction may be required depending on valve size, serviceconditions and material. When purchasing valves for other than the normal installation, valve orientation should be specified when
consulting the factory.
3. After closing a gate valve with sufficient force to develop shutoff, the stem should be backed off slightly ( 1 ⁄ 8 to 1 ⁄ 4 turn) to relieve stem
load. This will enable the stem to expand slightly without bending or damaging the valve and will not affect valve shutoff.
4. Gate valves are offered in two designs: Parallel Disc and Flexible Wedge. Parallel Disc are position seated; Flexible Wedge are torqueseated when closing.

Pressure Seal Valves
1. Globe valves are normally installed with flow and pressure under the disc. Always consult with the factory before installing valves
flow in the other direction. Under certain service conditions or when valves are equipped with cylinders or electric motor actuators, thmay be a cost advantage in designing and installing the valves with flow over the disc. If actuators are sized for these conditions, cmust be taken to assure valves are installed correctly.

. Check valves are suited for moderately high velocity applications. For optimum performance, however, these valves should operate within
a flow range sufficient to hold the valve open fully, but not so high that it produces excessive turbulence and pressure drop. Either extrememay damage valve internals, and shorten operating life.
. Service involving frequent flow reversals or fluid pulsations should be avoided. Locating check valves no closer than five pipe diameters
from elbows and other flow diverting means can minimize or eliminate problems in most installations. Where this is not possible, it may
be necessary to reduce the maximum velocity by as much as 50%.
. Excessive fluid noise is usually an indication that cavitation is occurring.
. Check valves are normally designed for installation in horizontal pipe runs or in vertical lines where flow is up only. When valves are used
in vertical pipe runs, this should be clearly specified.
. If severe conditions are outside these recommendations contact Pacific Valves for further information prior to use.

Parallel seat gate and seat ring construction can be furnished
for high differential pressure services or where high pipingloads or thermal expansion may cause sticking of a wedge
type gate. The parallel seat gate assembly consists of two
interchangeable spring loaded discs, a fully guided disccarrier, and retaining pins.
Position seating eliminates stress and potential bindingdue to thermal expansion of the stem. Spring loaded discs
help affect a tight seal in low differential pressure services.Discs are interchangeable which simplifies in-line mainte-
nance and eliminates the need to custom fit the seats tothe discs. Internal stops provide positive over travel protec-tion for power actuated valves and act as a reference to posi-
tion the discs in the open and closed positions. This designfeatures low seating torque which reduces actuator size and
cost. Hardfaced seating surfaces provide high cycle capabil-
ity in very high differential pressure services.

The flex wedge is a one piece, fully guided cast wedge with a central hubto allow the seating faces to move relative to each other thus compensatingfor distortion of the body seats due to thermal expansion or piping loads.Seat ring and wedge seating surfaces are set on a 5 degree angle from

vertical to minimize sliding contact of thewedge and seat ring during opening andclosing. Wedging actions help affect a tightseal in low differential pressure services.Flexible wedge construction resists wedge

GENERAL DESIGN FEATURESHighly EfficientThe Pacific tilting disc check valve uses gravity to rapidly close
he disc upon reversal of flow. Unlike most other tilting disc checkvalves which must swing through a 90° arc, the Pacific design fully
opens or closes through an arc of only 45°.
This short-arc coupled with the low pendulum effect achieved by
pivoting the disc through a point near its center of gravity assuresapid closure.
Tight ShutoffConical seating at an angle to flow is self aligning, tight andalways closed in a no-flow situation. Even in vertical (flow-up) pipe
uns, this valve provides exceptionally tight shutoff.
Long LifeHardfaced seating surfaces, large diameter hinge pins, and corro-
sion resistant bearing surfaces help lengthen operating life in toughsurfaces. There are no springs to break or bind. A positive internal
disc stop prevents flutter.
Internal Disc HangerProvides adjustable alignment, eliminates body wall penetrations.
The unique Pacific tilting disc check valve internal disc hangernot only eliminates potential leakage through external hinge pins,
but because the hanger shelf is machined parallel to the seating
surface, it allows adjustment of the disc/seat if seat repair is everrequired. By adding or removing precision stainless steel spacers
between hanger and shelf, the disc can be “dropped” into the bodyso as to provide perfect alignment and shutoff. No other design
offers this combination of features.

Service Recommendation
1. The swing check valve shall be operated in a manner to avoid thefollowing troubles:
1) formation of excessive high surge pressure as a result of valveclosing, and
2) rapid fluctuating movement of valve closing member. The exces-sively high surge pressure by valve closing is prevented by closingthe valve fast enough not to develop a significant reverse flow ona sudden shutoff which is a source of the surge pressure. Thus,the closing speed of valve should match closely with the speed offorward flow retard.
The rapid fluctuating movement of valve closing member must beavoided to prevent the moving valve parts from excessive wearwhich may result in early failure of valve. Such movements can beprecluded by sizing the valve to a flow rate which forces the closuremember not to move.
2. The swing check valve can also be mounted to the vertical position,provided the disc should not reach the valve position. However, the
closing moment of disc by weight is very low in fully-opened posi-tion, so the valve tends to close late. In order to overcome suchslow response to flow retardation, the disc may be supplied with alever-mounted or with spring loaded.

The sealing mechanism through spindle
is the same construction as the pressure
seal bonnet.
By inserting knockout pin into a drilled
hole, segmental thrust ring can be easily
driven out of the retaining groove.
The gasket can be removed freely withoutany damage to the sealed area of the
body. The bonnet joint shall remain tight
under all operating conditions as thesealing pressure is always much greater
than the fluid pressure in the line, therebyeliminating any leakage. The higher
internal pressure, the greater sealing
pressure.
Seat rings are stellite faced and securely
welded in place.
Inner row of studs establish the initial seal of the
pressure seal joint.
Segmental thrust ring absorbs all the thrustsapplied by internal pressure.
A hardened stainless steel protective ring
prevents deformation of the top portion of the
soft metallic gasket.
To ensure a secure connection between the
arm and the disc nut, split pin is used.
Design Data Features. Comply with the following standards; ASME B16.25, B16.34, MSS-SP-25, API 600 Style A.
2. The butt-welded end details of PK standard product shall be prepared in accordance with ASME B16.25.
