Adam Carolla Garage Tour and 10th Anniversary of the CarCast Podcast and Show by PCMC Member Rob Steinle

I flew to Los Angeles, California for a full day of cars, movies and live podcasting. The day was initially going to be a car show, documentary screening and 10th anniversary of Adam Carolla’s podcast. Several weeks before the event, two additional events were added, a tour of Adam’s personal collection and garage along with a tour of the Petersen Automotive Museum’s “Vault”. The Vault is where they keep cars not on display in the museum and store vehicles for, I’m guessing, those of means to pay them to store their vehicles there. By the way, the Petersen Automotive Museum is pretty special. It is the Petersen of Petersen Automotive Publications. A converted department store, it has about four floors of museum, gift shop, restaurant, four floors of outdoor parking garage along with underground parking that is… The Vault. It is a very unique and well put together venue. When done with all the screaming kids at Disneyland, I highly recommend checking the museum out, even if it means staying an extra day or two: https://www.petersen.org/about

The morning started extra early (stupid daylight savings) at Adam Carolla’s garage. We were initially escorted around by Adam’s Carcast Podcast co-host Matt “the Motorator” D’Andria. Adam has collected almost all of Paul Newman’s race cars from his racing career. Datsuns, Nissans, Oldsmobiles and a 4+ million dollar Porsche 935. Adam arrived soon enough, and led the group of 25 or so of us around to each vehicle, providing its history and providence.

The garage/showroom is attached to an equal sized man-cave, with a wet bar, game area, televisions and memorabilia from Adam’s TV work and racing.

It has Newman Racing, Tom Cruise Movie and other racing memorabilia.

The actual working garage is in a separate building, with mill, lathe, welding, and painting among other capabilities. There were four cars in work there. One was a tribute car being built to duplicate the Hawaiian Tropic 935, only in the famed “Tim Apple” livery (these race cars can have several different owners, sponsors, drivers and liveries). So, you have to have several to see the entire history of one.



That is not Adam Carolla, but Matt, the aforementioned co-host of the Carcast podcast (and me). Probably the highlight of the day so far, we are in front of Matt’s 93 Fox Body Cobra. He’s done extensive modification on the suspension, drive line, engine and soon the induction. Next, I’m in front of Adam’s 935 as it is fired up for the car show later in the day. If you’re a Porsche person or road race aficionado, definitely in heaven, if you’re a car person, fantastic to see for sure. We’ve been to some pretty amazing garages, and this one is up there for sure. The thing is, Adam, while infrequently, does drive these cars in races around the world (the 935 was taken to the Goodwood Festival of speed for a couple of runs up the Hillclimb at Goodwood House (https://www.goodwood.com/), something all owners should do, I think…

From there, I made my way down to the Petersen museum vault tour. As I said, it is like the basement parking garage (because it was). Looked at some 150 cars in 90 minutes. A lot of automotive history from around the world. No photos or video allowed (which is good, because, for some reason, my card got corrupted, and the photos from the day ended before the end of Carolla’s garage tour, FFS). They had a 427 cobra that was one of the left (continuation?) over Shelby cars, a gold 66 next to a gold, and I mean a 24 carat gold plated Delorean. Apparently it was an AMEX gold card thing that didn’t go too well. A lot of old cars you would see in Lemay, some Hollywood cars and many one of several and one of one pieces.After the Vault tour, it was on to the CarCast car show on the roof museum garage. Jay Leno brought a Jensen, the comedian Jeff Dunham brought a purple 2018(19?) Ford GT, there was a sweet Icon Bronco (photo lost), another pile of Porsches (an electric conversion that was fantastic) and even a crazy drift car. It wasn’t a huge car show, but there was a lot of variety. I talked to a guy who drove his gnarly modified Mustang from Vegas. It turned out to be a 4cyl Ecoboost Mustang. I should have parked my rental next to it for a before and after (the white one below).



The car show ended with several awards, people’s choice, Matt and Adam’s favorites and show favorite. During the show there were several interviews of celebrities who had brought their cars. Below you can see Jeff Dunham’s purple Ford GT and a beautiful pearl white Aston Martin in the background.

After the car show we saw a documentary on Willy T. Ribbs, Uppity, the first black Indy driver. We also learned that Jack Roush was a complete douche. Guess I won’t put any of his stuff on my stuff... This isn’t just a racing documentary, but a history lesson on the equity of racing. The doc is primarily through the eyes of a black racer (Willy), but also gives insight on the business of racing. It is very good and very thought provoking. Willy was there with Adam and the producer, answering questions from the audience. Carolla and his crew have put together other racing and auto related documentaries, the 24hr War (Ford vs. Ferrari) and Winning, the Racing Life of Paul Newman, among others. https://chassy.com/

This was the end of the car related events and the 10th Anniversary of the Adam Carolla Show Podcast was next in one of the other galleries of the museum. This had the history of Porsche in it, and those photos are now lost to the X-ray gods (FFS). The selfie below closed out a long and fantastic day (yeah, it’s me).

Monday I saw a really rough 68 California Special in San Clemente. How did I know it was a 68? Not being Dick Knight or a Dagan, I looked at the standard issue California personalized plate.... SPCL 68... But must be a driver. Likely not for sale. Took a photo Tuesday.

Thanks to my wonderful wife, Victoria, for encouraging me to go on this excursion for my birthday.

PCMC Representing the Pacific NW on MOM’s Drive to 55By Linda Hallberg

Tom Rowley and Gary Hallberg will be driving to Concord, NC for the 55th Anniversary of the Mustang in Gary’s 2012 BOSS 302.

The ‘Race Red’ Mustang was purchased from Tri-Country FORD in Mabank, Texas. Gary picked her up on October 31, 2011 and drove home visiting family and friends along the way with wife Linda. Tom and Gary drove to Alabama for the 45th in Tom’s 2005 ‘Fire Red’ GT Premium Convertible, which Tom bought new in April of 2005. Each drove their own Mustang to Reno’s 50th Anniversary.

Tom and Gary are members of MCA and Pacific Cascade Mustang Club in Kent, WA, sponsored by BOWEN SCARFF FORD. Gary joined the Club in 1967 and Tom in 2000. Both live in the Renton area.

Congrats to PCMC Member John Chudy, whose ‘68 Coupe was featured in the Readers Album of the latest issue of Mustang Monthly (page 72)!


Meeting Minutes: March 1st, 2019by PCMC Secretary Kristen Martin

Total membership signed in: 32Willi King called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm on 3/1/19.

Gary Dagan moved that Club meeting minutes as printed in the Pegasus newsletter would be approved. The motion was seconded and carried.

President’s Agenda: Willi King introduced an amendment to the PCMC constitution which was discussed at the February 2019 PCMC Board meeting, approved by the PCMC Board to be published in the Pegasus newsletter and brought to the club membership for a vote. The proposal was that the board position of Car Show Committee Chairperson would replace the board position of Media Coordinator in the PCMC Constitution. Having been submitted to the membership for a vote and having 32 club members present at the meeting, a show of hands vote was taken, and the change amendment was approved unanimously.

Vice President Jacob Astorga confirmed that he and Dave Reinhart will share the running of the PCMC Club Store. Come see what there is available – T-Shirts, Sweatshirts, some hats and small PCMC Patches. More will be coming soon.

Ken Martin gave the treasurer’s report, showing that the bank account is healthy. We continue to hold a reserve for car show expenses that will need to be paid before the actual event.

Membership: Linda Hallberg introduced 2 visitors for the evening. Arnaldo Perdomo works near Amante’s and came in for pizza, and Willi King invited him to come to the next club meeting. He had been looking for a fun club to join! Peter Shearer was invited by Mark Mathews during a visit to Revolution Speed Shop. He said he needed a group to go to shows with – it’s no fun going alone! Linda then presented PCMC Trivia questions, which stumped some but not all.

PCMC Pegasus –Tiffany gave everyone a reminder to let Linda Hallberg and Tiffany know about any email changes. She also said that the garage tour at Frank Stubbs house had AWESOME cars and COLD snow!

Tours & Events: Margaret Petersen invited everyone to the Almost St Patty’s Day Dinner Out on March 13 at The Harp Bar. Coming up very soon is the 55 Years of Mustang Anniversary Event April 16-20 in North Carolina. Margaret and Mark Mathews are working on a run to Ellensburg on July 13, including a stop for burgers at a great place there.

MCA: Chris Johnson encouraged people to get tickets for the Children’s Charity cars- MCA gives away a pair of cars each year. This year it is a 2019 Bullitt and a ’68 Bullitt Replica! He reviewed the MCA shows scheduled for the year and reminded that the Saturday after the meeting would be the Tech Session in Graham, and of course more burgers – this time at Big Daddy’s new spot, which happens to be in Graham!

Car Show: Dick Knight reviewed the current status of the Car Show sponsors: Bowen Scarff has already provided a check for the August show! He is contacting more businesses to sponsor the Show and the Trophies

and has commitments from several locations. The Show Flyer should be ready by April 1, and the volunteer book is ready NOW – all it needs is your names filled in! Samples are being lined up for goody bags, a host hotel will be available in Kent for people to come to town the night before, and MotoSho Registrations are open.

Old Business: Mark Mathews investigated pricing for large patches for the Club Store, so that people can buy a patch and sew it onto the jacket of their choice.

New Business: Dawn asked if the club was going to have a portable microphone and speaker so that members can hear better in the meetings. Jerry agreed that he will bring the portable microphone.

Website: Mark Mathews asked for photos of the members’ cars for the website. Please send your pics to Mark or to the PCMC email.

Mark Palmore had sold tickets for the 50/50 split the pot. A 45$ prize went to two winners – Helen Heathman and Larry Lee. Other winners chose between classic books and Chilton guides for prizes.

Willi King announced that Amante’s Pizza stays open for us on club nights, so please move quickly so the restaurant is not at a disadvantage.

Gary Dagan moved that the meeting be adjourned at 8:35 pm, and the motion carried.

Brakes Tech Session Recapby Tiffany Dagan

Eleven club members gathered at Sorensen’s Automotive in Graham on a cold but sunny morning to learn about brakes. We started with Chris Johnson’s 65 convertible, and learned that the bigger brake shoe pad always goes IN THE BACK! Believe it or not, this is one of the things that people tend to get wrong on early model brakes. Chris also showed us his collection of tools to make the brake replacement process easier, including tools to remove/reinstall springs, make adjustments, and automatic brake bleeders for those of us who don’t have another person sitting around to repeatedly pump the brakes.

We then moved on to Margaret Petersen’s 98 coupe, where we learned how to check for signs of normal/abnormal wear and tear on the discs, and when it’s a good time to replace brakes. Chris had another handy tool to measure the amount of brake pad left, which helps eliminate the guesswork of when it’s time to replace. Turns out Margaret had plenty of brakes left on her Mustang.

Afterward we went to the “new” Big Daddy’s in Graham, which is now in a strip mall. The restaurant is smaller than when it was in Auburn, but the food is better, and there’s no teriyaki on the menu (perhaps because there’s now a teriyaki resturant next door)...this time they stuck to more of the “drive-in” staples, like burgers, hot dogs, fries, onion rings, and shakes. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals.

Thank you to Chris Johnson for spearheading the tech session, as well as providing the coffee and donuts! We appreciate Chris sharing his Saturday and some car knowledge with us! Thank you to Margaret for bringing her car to use as our “late model” guinea pig. And thank you to Brent, the owner of Sorensen’s Automotive, for allowing us to invade his shop for a few hours (and for bringing his dog so we could play a little catch in the sun, too!).

About Pacific Cascade Mustang ClubBased in Kent, Washington, Pacific Cascade Mustang Club is the only original Mustang club in the Puget Sound area, and the oldest Mustang club in the nation. We are a group of Mustang and Ford enthusiasts who are dedicated to the enjoyment and preservation of Mustangs young, old and in between.

Membership MeetingsMeetings are held the first Friday of every month at 7:30pm at Bowen Scarff Ford in Kent (1157 Central Avenue North).

Community SupportPacific Cascade Mustang Club has donated tens of thousands of dollars over the years to support local charities through our activities, events and annual car show. We have supported Pediatric Interim Care Center in Kent, Northwest Harvest, Kent Firefighters Toys for Joy Drive, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, among others.

Annual Car ShowPCMC and Bowen Scarff Ford in Kent host our annual All Ford Show and Mustang Roundup in August. The show is open to all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury-powered vehicles.

Tours and EventsPCMC takes part in numerous events including garage tours, recreational outings, car show caravans, tech sessions and a monthly dinner night out. Dinner night out takes place on the 13th of every month. If the 13th falls on a weekend, we try to organize a local trip or tour for the day.

Tech SessionsThe club hosts various tech sessions for members to learn more about restoring, repairing and maintaining their Mustangs. Tech sessions are typically held on an as-needed basis and have included topics like cleaning and detailing, front-end suspension, electrical, wiring, brakes and differentials.

Membership Requirements• Attend 2 functions,

one of which must be a membership meeting.

• Be a currently licensed driver with valid insurance.

• Own, drive, or be an enthusiast of Mustangs or Ford-powered vehicles and have a desire to enjoy companionship with other Mustang and Ford enthusiasts.

• Pay dues of $30 per household per year.
