DESCRIPTION

Packet #5 Rough Draft Sometimes plagiarism is unintentional: Example source: “As one might imagine, Stegner was not in favor of the American Dream, or at least not the materialistic dream of status and possessions” Benson, Jackson. Wallace Stegner: His Life and Work. New York: Viking, Direct Quote: Use quotations marks when you use the exact words from the source. Take a look at the “Correct” and “Plagiarized” example in your packet. What is the difference between the correct and plagiarized examples? The plagiarized example has no quotations marks and the parenthetical citation is not there. Why is the second example considered plagiarized? Because the author was not given credit for their words. The information on this slide came from your packet. How would you give credit to the the author? Add a parenthetical citation to the slide. Be sure to create a citation on the Works Cited slide at the end. (Torres 46)

Wallace Stegner: His Life and Work. New York: Viking, 1996.2. Paraphrase: If you use someone’s idea but not their exact words, you must change

more than just a few words and still give them credit. Take a look at the “Correct” and “Plagiarized” examples in your packet.

What is the difference between the correct and plagiarized examples? • Both plagiarized versions are missing a citation and the quote is copied word for word or not

changed enough.

Packet #5 Rough DraftTips for avoiding plagiarism: • Don’t copy and paste information then try to change it into your own words. This is a

bad idea because the temptation is to keep most of the words that the author used.

• Use Magnet Summaries – choose the most important words then create your own statement without looking back at the text. Once you have completed your statement, double check to be sure it is worded differently.

• Read multiple sources. This way you will hear different versions of the information and have a much easier time restating the evidence in your own words.

• Not sure if you are plagiarizing??? Ask for help.(Torres 48)

Packet #5 Rough DraftConclusions• Re-read your introduction. Think, “How can I reconnect to what I said in my introduction? ”

• When you reconnect to your introduction: • Your paper is complete. • The reader is reminded of the content of your paper.• The conclusion helps the reader to think about their next step (how they will use the information that you

gave them).

• Take a look at the examples in your packet.

Works Cited Page• To create your citation use the website bibme http://www.bibme.org/ • Choose MLA as the style. • The website will prompt you for information from this point. • Remember, when you copy/paste your URL (website address) into the

bibme citation builder, it will NOT catch all of the information; such as the author, publisher, etc. • Your citation will be incorrect if you do not add these to your citation

(Automated Bibliography Maker).
