Berlioz: La Grand Messe des Morts -Berlioz was undoubted ly one of Thomas Beecham's favourite composers. He conducted Berlioz's

music even when it was unfash ionable, and after t he wa r he was one of severa l conductors responsible for a reassessment of Berlioz's merits. In 1947 he conducted a radio performance of

Berl ioz's epic opera, Les Troyens, and throughout the 1950s regu larly programmed pieces by Berlioz

in his concerts.

Beecham conducted Berlioz's La Grande Messe des Marts on several occasions, but this is the sole

recording of his interpretation of this work. He had conducted the piece in 1958 in t he Roya l Festiva l

Hal l but found t he resu lts rather disappointing. The space was too const ricted to permit t he fu ll

orchest ral requi rements from the score, and the LPO chorus was not as polished as he wou ld have liked. Beecham decided to try again in late 1959, this t ime in the much larger Roya l Albert Hall, with a

sign ificantly larger orchestra, and a smaller but better-t ra ined chorus. The resul t was a triumph. The

Times pra ised his 'remarkable ea r of orchestra l ba lance' that produced a 'magn if icently vita l

performance.' The Times wished that the radio audience had been able to hear the work in stereo to appreciate Beecham's careful spacing of the instrumenta l forces in the ha ll , inc luding some in the

boxes. The BBC did not record it in stereo, unfortunately, though t he ambient stereo version

presented here gives us some sense of how the aud ience in the ha ll hea rd it at the ti me.

The so loist is the Welsh tenor Richard Lewis, a wel l-known rec ita list, concert and opera performer in

Britain in t he 1950s and 1960s. He was particu larly famed fo r his Gerontius (see PASC525) and his

Mozart ro les at Glyndebourne, but was also one of the few able to cope wit h com plex ro les in new

operas such as King Priam and Moses and Aaron .

This was Beecham's last concert in the Roya l Albert Hall. He gave his last concert (in Portsmouth ) less

than six months later in May 1960, and died in March 1961.
