part of the journey for 80 yearsThis year Paddy Pallin will celebrate 80 years of service to the Australian outdoor community. A lot has changed in this time, however Paddy Pallin the company has always followed the vision of Paddy the man. Our commitment is to provide quality and innovative product to help Australians explore this amazing continent and the world.

In 1930, Paddy lost his job due to the Great Depression and he later saw this as one of the best things that had ever happened to him. Sometimes we all need a push to find a calling that becomes our life’s work. The story goes, that when Paddy returned from a canoeing trip down the Shoalhaven River south of Sydney, he found his name on a list of retrenchments pinned to the front door of the office building. On his way home with a little reflection, a smile broke out and his hat went into the air. Paddy never looked back.

Paddy started from humble beginnings and was a humble man. He was never an elite athlete nor even excelled in his chosen activities. More importantly he was a man who loved exploring Australia’s

wild places and enjoyed the deeper relationships that time with people in the bush creates. Paddy was very involved with Scouts and Youth Hostels Association of Australia for he enjoyed introducing people to the activities that gave him so much joy. This is a trait that I believe continues in our business and is essential to providing the best gear and advice to customers from all ages and skill levels. You do not need to be an expert to shop at Paddy Pallin; nothing gives us greater pleasure than helping someone safely enjoy their first outdoor experience.

Throughout our history the Paddy Pallin company has maintained close relationships with our customers. I believe that our customers and club members have shaped this business just as much as the family and our passionate employees. I first heard about Paddy Pallin at an early 1990s travel night featuring New Zealand’s Milford Track.

A Pallin representative was distributing the company’s famous catalogue and was excited about the new season range of ultra-cool Polartec fleeces.

One glance and I was hooked and a Wilderness Polartec was soon mine. “It’s made from recycled PET bottles. The ones that milk comes in.”

I’d repeat this line many times in the following weeks. Just how could something so well-made and so warm have started life as a plastic bottle?

18 years later and that fleece is still going strong, looking almost exactly like it did the day I bought it, though it was soon joined by a heavier Pallin fleece bought while visiting a wintery Great Ocean Road. And the Milford Track?

It took until April 2010 when New Zealand’s Fiordland National Park trio of Great Walks - the kepler, the Routeburn and the Milford tracks were my destination.Three tracks, 165 kilometres and my two fleeces.

With New Zealand’s icy gale-force southerlies, bucketing rain, sleet, and snow, the heavy Pallin fleece was my warm layer on the track, while the lighter one kept me warm in the common room at night.

In the chilly bunkroom both fleeces were rolled into a rough, but warm, cushioning pillow. Now that’s versatile!

But apart from versatility, my fleeces gave me something else - confidence. With my other well-chosen tramping gear, including Scarpa boots and a superb North Face pack, I tackled something many people told me would scare them witless. Yes I was nervous - for five minutes.

My well chosen gear quickly proved its worth, inspiring me to tackle anything New Zealand’s tracks or unpredictable weather could throw at me.

CLUB member story

A note about a living testament to the durability of Paddy Pallin products. I bought my ‘Golden Tan Era Wall Tent’ from Paddy’s in 1960 and fifty years on it is still going strong after some frequent use over the decades. I used it for instance for a bush walk in May this year at Wilsons Promontory.

Here is a photo of the tent from a 2007 trip in which, with my son Robin, I completed a walk through the Alps (Canberra to Walhalla) begun in 1971 when Robin was only two.

Some people tend to scoff at the tent and wonder how I can survive without a sewn in ground sheet. I also have to look around for suitable tent poles at each stop, another cause of bewilderment amongst younger walkers. If walking above the tree line I do of course carry poles.

I suppose like myself it is a bit of an old timer but why worry if it still serves the purpose well?
