Dear Friends,
When we as Church come together to celebrate the liturgy, there is a need for dedicated ministers to takecharge of certain responsibilities so that the presider can give his attention to leading the assembly in prayer. These dedicated ministers are called altar servers. At Padre Serra we have 115 dedicated young ministers, ranging in age from 10 to 19. Half are high school students and there is an equal mix of girls and boys.
During their training period, the servers learn the order of the liturgy so well that they can anticipate eachaction and need of the presider. They are not just mechanical helpers working in and around the altar. Eachserver has special roles and responsibilities. They have been taught to understand what their roles are andhow to perform them. They know how to move, carry things, and keep stillness and silence. The altarservers can influence the atmosphere of prayer by their presence in the assembly around the altar of OurLord. Rest assured that the assembly definitely admires the altar servers. This is a ministry that goes all theway back to the early church. As trained young ministers they come to the altar of God to be close to ourpublic prayer life.
The church is the center of community life, both sacred and secular. It is in our parish church that weconduct the business of our faith. So what is it we do? We have processions. We listen to God’s Word. Weconfirm our faith. We respond with acclamations: Amen, Alleluia. We ask for God’s help in our lives. Wegive witness and affirm relationships. We celebrate the Eucharistic banquet. We bring new members intothe faith and bid farewell to those who have died. During all these activities, the altar servers are thereserving and assisting.
So what types of functions do the altar servers perform? They arrive early so that they can assist thesacristan with taking the sacred vessels to the credence table and the gifts to the gift table. They check to seethat all the required seats in the assembly are reserved. They retrieve the processional cross and light thetorches. They make sure that the Roman Missal has been tabbed and ready for the presider. The teamcoordinator makes sure that each assigned altar server has a unique responsibility. Once everything is in itsproper place, they assemble in front of the baptismal font for the entrance procession. Processions areimportant in our liturgies. They give us a sense of transition and mission and our altar servers are involvedin all them: entrance, gospel, offertory, communion and exit processions.
Serving is a privilege and with a privilege comes responsibility. Ouraltar servers have been called to serve during our liturgies. Padre SerraParish is grateful that they have responded to this call with a real senseof dedication. They help the entire community celebrate the Eucharistby their humble service. It is my hope that our altar servers will spenda lifetime serving the Church in many other ways and remember thisministry as a time when God gave joy to their youth.
In Christ,
Bob ShadduckAltar Server Ministry Director
