Dear Colleagues,

Springtime in Birmingham is the place to be for this year’s RCPCH Conference and exhibition. Taking place from 13-15 May at the ICC Birmingham, our flagship event takes on extra importance as we navigate through turbulent times in paediatrics.

The theme for this year’s conference is: ‘Paediatrics:

pathways to a brighter future’, which I feel is especially pertinent for the times that we live in.

Political uncertainty combined with pressures around workforce and funding are contributing to challenging conditions in paediatrics and it is vital now more than ever before that we, as a community, can come together to create a positive vision for the future.

We look forward to welcoming delegates who will arrive from around the world to discover the latest in paediatric research, hear from an expert line-up of speakers and enjoy some excellent networking opportunities.

Looking forward to a brighter future for child health

We will also use these three days to showcase best practice, clever ideas and innovations that improve clinical services, plus skills for safeguarding wellbeing, team morale, and effective recruitment. We will also explore examples from other countries that will help us look differently at how we do things. Each day has a particular theme – but we have several cross-cutting themes too, and our conference programme will help you identify which sessions will interest you the most.

The programme has been developed in partnership with over 30 specialty bodies so you can choose the sessions to suit your interests and we will have an app available to support your personal schedule.

Please encourage your colleagues and other members of your healthcare team to review the conference programme as we have considered the developmental needs of the whole child health workforce.

I hope this guide demonstrates the quality of the 2019 RCPCH Conference programme but please do check-in on the conference website (www.rcph.ac.uk/conf19) for the full schedule.

Don’t forget, discounted early-bird booking closes on Friday 15 February. See you in Birmingham!

Yours faithfully,

Dr Camilla Kingdon Chair, Conference Organising CommitteeRCPCH Vice President for Education and Professional Development

What to look out for at the 2019 RCPCH Conference and exhibition

Innovators in Paediatrics

A new feature for the RCPCH Conference and exhibition, the ‘Innovators in Paediatrics’ presentations, will showcase the latest ideas and best practice in child health.

Adapted from specially selected abstracts, these presentations will challenge your thinking on a range of topics and shine a light on new ideas.

These sessions will use the fast paced ‘PechaKucha’ style of presentation which last exactly six minutes and 40 seconds and shows 20 images, each for 20 seconds. In less than seven minutes, the audience will hear speakers describe their research in punchy style, allowing a few minutes after each for questions. We are excited to be trialling this method

and encourage you to come along to see these presentations for yourself in the main auditorium on days two and three of the conference.

Skills and simulations in paediatric emergencies

There will be opportunities to update your skills and knowledge in paediatric emergencies with drop-in sessions throughout the conference. A team of expert instructors from the Advanced Life Support Group and The Resuscitation Council (UK) will run these popular hands-on sessions to help you brush up on your skills.

Taking care of you

If you are concerned about the toll working in paediatrics is taking on you and your team, there will be workshops that explore the challenges facing frontline clinical staff and the possible solutions. Sessions to look out for include ‘The cost of caring’, which will be led by Caroline Elton, renowned occupational psychologist and author of ‘Also Human: The Inner Lives of Doctors’, and ‘How burnout in doctors affects patient care and what we can do about it’ with Dr Judith Johnson, Clinical Psychologist, School of Psychology, University of Leeds, and the Bradford Institute for Health Research.
