a.) ifbothsidesflat,theremaybealeakbetweentheairbrakesystemandthesuspensionairsystem.

b.) ifflatononeside,theremaybealeakbetweentheheightcontrolvalveandtheairspring.

2.) Checkautomaticheightcontrolvalve–testit:disconnectlinkageandmoveactuatingarmupanddowntoseeifairbaginflates/deflates.

3.) Checkbushings–placeprybarbetweentrailingarmandhangerandcheckformovement.Abnormaltirewearisagoodindicatorofbushingwear.

4.) Checkshocks–shouldbewarmtothetouchaftervehicleoperation.

a.) ifcold,theshockisnotfunctioningproperlyandshouldbereplaced.

b.) Ifshockcanbeeasilycompressedafterremoval,shockshouldbereplaced.

c.) Also,checkforshockbushingwear.

5.) Checkforunder-inflation–slightpositivepressuremaintainsshapeofairbagandpreventsfolding/pinching.

Most Common & Preventable Failures99 U-BOLTS

Never re-use U-bolts!!!!Check they are the proper gradeEnsure properly aligned (check condition of top plate and saddle alignment holes)Allow suspension to settle, retorque while under load.Torque U-bolts per spec – re-torque at 500 miles and check periodically

99 SPRINGSProper U-bolt maintenance will increase spring life but springs will fatigue and wear. Check for fatigue cracks. One overlooked factor in spring longevity is brake balance. One badly adjusted brake makes the other brakes overcompensate and the spring at those axle ends will get “wound up” more than if all pulling equally.

99 TORQUE9ROD9NEGLECTThis affects spring life, bushings, brackets, bolsters, shocks, air bags and other suspension hardware. Check for failure periodically – especially transverse rods!

99 LUBRICATION9FAILURESWear is accelerated; wear patterns are exaggerated; inhibits normal free movement, resulting in part breakage.

99 BUSHING9FAILURESWaiting to replace worn bushings until after they’ve created a secondary, more expensive problem.

99 SHOCK9ABSORBER9NEGLECTThis affects spring life, bushings and other suspension hardware not to mention additional strain and vibration on radiators, electrical systems, cabs and tires. Defective shocks can also contribute to air bag failure.

Torque Rods

Purpose of a torque rod:

• Restrainrotationoftheaxlehousingduringaccelerationandbraking

• Locatetheaxleandmaintainalignment

• Controldrivelineangle

• Absorbleaningandcorneringforces

Key technical point:

Transverserodsmustbeperpendiculartotheframerailwheninstalled.Ifnotinstalledproperly:

• Theinnerpincouldbreak

• Thetorquerodcouldbreak

• Thebushingcouldwalkoutoftherod

• Warrantymaybevoid

When should rods be rebushed or replaced?

• Benttorquerod

• Morethan1/8”movementattherodeye.Cancheckbyhandorbypryingagainstendwithabar

• Bushingmaterialistornorcracked

• Pinorsleeveintherodeyeisoff-center(pinappearstobe“walkingout”ofrodeye)

• Pin/sleeveisnolongerlocatedintheverticalcenteroftherodeye

• Boltholeinstraddlepinsisstretched,elongated

ATRO’s Free-Rotation Design

Reduces inventory levels and simplifies installation:

• Noneedtomarktheoldbushingposition

• Nostruggletolineuptheboltholes

• Installsproperlythefirsttime,everytime

• Noduplicateinventoryforidenticalrodswithdifferentbushingangles

 Zeroes out to ride height:

High-Temperature Underhood Mounts

• ATROrecentlylauncheditsnewestbreakthroughproductline–High-Temperaturemotormountsandunderhoodcomponents.ATROisoneofseveralcompaniesreleasingnewproductsthatcantoleratehighertemperatures.So,whyhasunderhoodheatbecomesuchanissue?

• EPATier3emissionstandards,ineffectsince2007–2010,mandatethatdieselenginemanufacturersreduceemissionlevelsofNOx(nitrogenoxides).Therippleeffectcreatedbythenecessaryunderhoodchangesgetscomplicatedbecauseeachsolutioncreatesnewproblemsinanotherarea.Themostsignificantisonlybeginningtoberecognized:elevatedunderhoodtemperatures.

• Here’sthebigpictureshortversion:NewenginedesignsuseEGRtocontrolNOxemissionsbyrecirculatingsomeoftheexhaustgasesbackintothecombustionchamber.Duetothemixofexhaustwithairenteringthecombustionchamber,thereislessoxygenthanifitwerejustair.Withlessoxygenitdoesn’tburnashotandatalowertemperatureNOxdon’tgetachancetoforminthefirstplace–thuslowerNOxemissionlevels.Buthere’sthekicker- the exhaust is cooled before it is reintroduced to the combustion chamber.Enginemanufacturershavealwaysusedthebasicruleofthumbthattheenergyoutputoftheengineisequallydividedwith1/3goingtopower,1/3toexhaustand1/3usedtocooltheengine. In these new engine systems, the cooling system is now over-burdened by 15 – 30% because it must additionally cool the exhaust gas before it can recirculate for round two.

• Do not mix standard mounts and HT mounts of the same part number– if the standard mounts are affected by heat and melt (or soften and compress), the full weight of the engine/tranny will fall on the unaffected HT mount. ONE EXCEPTION to this mixing rule is on the Kenworth mounts KT59-62001 and KT59-62002-HT (or KT59-62003-HT which includes hardware.) In this one application, ATRO offers the front mounts in HT but not the rear mounts. The front mounts are susceptible to heat-related failure but the rear mounts show no such track. The material used in the rear mounts address vibration isolation specifically – the added expense of an HT modification is not necessary.
