It was named after the Latin word februum, which means purification because the month was a time for purification. February is the third and last month of meteorological winter in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, February is the third and last month of summer (the seasonal equivalent of August in the Northern Hemisphere, in meteorological reckoning). Its birthstone is the amethyst. which symbolizes piety, humility, spiritual wisdom, and sincerity. February is also the time of year when the CBRGC has its annual rock & Gem show at the Kiwanis Club. And as is every year, we need your help with various aspects of the show. You don't necessarily need to stay for a whole day, just a couple hours would be a big help. This show is our main fundraiser for the year and allows the club to offer the services of a shop for classes and to practice your lapidary skills. But to continue this we need your help so if you have some free time to donate please contact the Show Chair Roz and let her know when you are available. I hope to see you at the show, one way or another!! until next month... KEEP ON ROCKING!!! Show Update... We have most of what we will need for volunteers for the show. We would like members to contribute finished pieces to be put on display in showcase at the show. These pieces will be photographed with ID and will be returned at end of show or next club meeting February 7. Please bring pieces to the show either Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. We will need help loading up the trucks to return to the shop Sunday at the end of the show. Please contact Roz by phone 321 431 -0159 or email [email protected].

Meeting Minutes January 3, 2019

Meeting called to order at 6:10 pm. Meeting opened with pledge of allegiance. Lucy discussed her plan, as 1st vice president, for the New year. This will include materials made available by Kiel for discussion of various rocks and where they are found. There was also some discussion of possible field trips. 2019 show progress discussed. There is difficulty finding an armed guard for security at Kiwanis. There is still a need for volunteers to help with admissions, sluice and silent auction. Silent Auction: Pam has table set up tonight. She also will be running the silent auction, along with Lucy, at the Show. Rock Swap sponsored by Canaveral Mineralogical Gem Society to be held at Wickham Park Saturday March 23 from 9am – 3pm. Vendors welcome at $10/table. For further information and to reserve a table 321-474- 1406, contact Mark Heathman. Mario addressed membership stating his vision for the club in the coming year. We need a 2nd VP who will take care of membership. Mario asked membership to consider volunteering for a fundraiser position, as well as an activites position. This would help us plan trips, gatherings, etc for the club in the future. Minutes read of previous meeting Dec 6, 2018 which occurred at the holiday dinner. Minutes were accepted as read. Treasurer's report given and a written report presented to Mario. Membership: We have 81 members. So far this month, there have been 22 renewals, 1 new adult member, 1 new youth. Membership is now $30/annually, but if members renew by January 31 there is a $5 discount. Youth membership will remain $10 annually. There are new membership cards being issued that have ma-chines in the workshop listed on the back and will require check off for competency of use by workshop su-pervisors. If a club member is unable or unwilling to follow safe use of equipment, that member will not be able to continue to use equipment without close supervision of supervisor. Workshop report : Bill Felski stated that all machines are currently in working order. The workshop has gone through a rearrangment of equipment made possible by the designs done by Pam Felski. We have added a second 10” saw, drill press, and a small variable speed polisher. Thanks go to Pam, Bill and Shawn Felski, Roz and Pete for their hard work. Website: Richard Dey has agreed to be our new webmaster. Show and Tell: Richard Dey presented his finished cabs and a sample rock he found during his trip to Grave's Mountain in Georgia. John Catana presented his cabs set in a silver filigree design. Jennifer Davison presented a willow gem tree with rose quartz petals. Library Displays: Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach, and Cocoa libraries all have club displays with advertising for the show as well. Thank you to Michele, Lucy, Sara, Roz, and Erleen for displayed items. Tonight we received a donation of a small Neycraft Kiln from Janet Law. There was a break for refreshment and silent auction. Meeting adjourned at 7:45pm....motion by Mark, second by Erleen. Minutes prepared by Roz Mestre, Secretary

Tribute to Jack Keil

Jack Keil passed away on December 21, 2018, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Jack was one of our club's most avid and dedicated members for many years. He took pride in taking care of all the equipment in the workshop, as if it was his own. We would always find Jack at the workshop either arguing with George or going to lunch with George, or tinkering with one machine or another. Every rock was identified as being “a rock”. Cabbing was one of his specialties and he made sure every club member was initiated by learning how to cab. Many of us still talk about him and how he influenced the honing of our skills. And of course, his words of wisdom had to include “Don't be stupid”. Jack mentored many students and they really appreciated his many hours of help.

MEMBER NOTIFICATIONS—PLEASE READ Please remember that annual dues can be paid at the workshop, show, and at meetings. Dues are now $30 annually, but there is a $5 discount for members paying their dues by January 31st. Youth membership remains unchanged at $10 annually.

All members should bring their new membership cards with them to the show in order to have free admission to the show. Most volunteer spots for the show have been filled except for the membership/grand prize table. We need two people per day, one for the morning for the 10 am-1 pm shift and one for the afternoon 1-5 pm. Please let Roz know ASAP if anyone is interested. Signs are available at the workshop for anyone to display as of Monday January 28 to advertise our show. We will be open Sunday from 1-4.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!

In March of 2018,

Jerri Heer from the

west coast of Florida

taught a Gem Tree

workshop for CBRGC.

This is an example of

the technique that

Jennifer learned. She

made this beautiful

willow gem tree with

rose quartz petals

using Jerri’s willow tree

pattern.

On January 13 and 15, Michelle taught

wire wrapping. Here are

CBRGC members Cynthia

and Donna.

Richard took Mario’s Monday night cabochon class. Here are some of the cabochons he made. These are made from a tile

backsplash, a trapezoid onyx, a mahogany obsidian with gold flash, an agate with chevron, some and petrified mud. He also brought in

some conglomerate that he and his daughter collected from Graves Mountain in Georgia.

Beautiful cabochons, silversmithing,

and filigree from CBRGC member

John.
