If you are over 65 years old, you probably remember Archbishop Fulton Sheen. Venerable Fulton Sheen was an American bishop who became known for his preach-ing and especially his work on television and radio. In fact, in the 1950s into the 1960s, he may have been the most recognizable Catholic in the United States.

Sheen once said, “Show me your hands. Do they have scars from giving? Show me your feet. Are they wounded in service? Show me your heart. Have you left a place for divine love?” In many ways that statement parallels something St. Paul writes in our Second Read-ing from his letter to the Galatians: “From now on, let no one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus on my body.” St. Paul is saying the same thing as Archbishop Sheen — that is, “Do our lives reflect the pres-ence of the Lord? Are we living as good stewards, as disciples, such that we, too, bear the marks of Jesus?”

We are not speaking of real scars, but we are talking about how the Lord has called us to follow Him, has asked us to take up the cross and follow Him as a matter of fact. If we strive to give, to serve, and to have faith as Sheen indicates, then we, too can re-joice as the Lord says to us, “Your names are written in heaven.” We are called, and we need to respond to that call.

Our Carmel Mission Respect Life Club wants you to know ~ As of June 9, 2016 physician-assisted suicide is now legal in California. And soon, we, the taxpayers, will be paying for it. Governor Brown’s proposed 2016 Budget recommends $1.4 million to purchase lethal drugs for more than 200 Medi-Cal patients (400+ next year) for those who want their physician to help them commit suicide. California would pay an estimated $5,400 per patient just for the drugs yet MediCal participants are not cur-rently offered a MediCal benefit for palliative care (designed to improve the quality of life for patients and their family facing serious illnesses.) It is our hope that the Governor and Legislature will improve the quality of life for Californians, not im-prove access to ending it. Please urge your Legislator and the Governor not to sup-port this expansion of physi-cian-assisted suicide. Go to CaCatholic.org for more in-formation.

PEACE The greeting of peace at Mass adds substance to a message of today’s readings: peace is relational. When we greet in peace the person near us at Mass, we share the touch of a handshake or embrace, sin-cere eye contact, and friendly words. The scriptures speak of a similar peace. The first reading from Isaiah describes the peace of the holy city, Jerusalem, a place of prosperity and comfort where the “LORD’s power shall be known to his ser-vants” (Isaiah 66:14c). The Christian understanding of peace changes slightly. Paul writes of the “peace and mercy” on all who are created anew. Jesus describes a feeling of peace that will rest on those who accept his disciples and their message. Peace is both an absence of strife and a personal blessing. May we always and sincerely bring peace to our own lives as we share it with others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Jubilee Year of Mercy Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Last Sunday, Jesus rebuked James and John for wanting to “call down fire from heaven” (Luke 9:54–55) on an unwelcoming town. As he sends forth dis-ciples today, Jesus again forbids retaliation against non-receptive listeners (10:10–11), showing us how to be Jesus’ “missionaries of mercy” this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Like the first disciples, we are sent not to proclaim ourselves but Jesus. As Jesus sent them in pairs, so are we also to work together in the community of the Church. We often describe the Church as Isaiah describes Jerusalem in today’s first reading, our comforting, nurturing Mother (Isaiah 66:13). So, going forth gently, like lambs among wolves (Luke 10:3), we share comforting peace, nur-turing food and drink (Luke’s image for Eucharist), and Jesus’ healing promise of unfailing, uncondi-tional mercy (10:5, 7, 9). Thus Jesus bids us pro-claim the kingdom of God by showing what God’s kingdom looks like in action. “Go, preach the Gos-pel,” Pope Francis’ saintly namesake of Assisi is said to have instructed his first friars, “and when neces-sary, use words!” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. DOCENT CORNER Do you know what a Basilica is and why the Car-mel Mission became one? The Latin word basil-ica was originally used to describe a Roman pub-lic building, usually located at the center of a Ro-man town (a forum). In Hellenistic cities, public basilicas appeared in the 2nd century B.C. After the Roman Empire officially became Christian, the term evolved to refer to a large and important church that had been given special ceremonial rights by the Pope. When it came time to build major churches, the Roman basilica form was preferable to the Roman temple form which was considered a pagan building. The Major Basilicas are the four great churches of Rome: St. John Lateran, St. Peter's Basilica, St. Paul outside the Walls and St. Mary Major. All the rest are minor basili-cas. There are approximately 1,500 minor basilicas found around the world, of which the majority is in Europe (522 in Italy alone). There are 58 basilicas in the U.S. The Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Québec was the first basilica in North America (1874) and the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis was the first basilica in the United States (1926). The "privileges" attached to the status of basilica are con-ferred by the Pope and include a certain precedence be-fore other churches, the right to display the conopaeum or umbrellina (a canopy resembling an umbrella) and the bell (Tintannablum). These are found in the rear of the Basilica. Four California Missions are minor basilicas: Carmel Mis-sion was consecrated in 1960 and designated a basilica in 1961 by Pope John XXIII, San Francisco Asis which is the church next to Mission Delores in 1952, Mission San Diego in 1975 and San Juan Capistrano Church (not the original mission) in 2000. The Carmel Mission is a basilica because it fulfilled the following necessary characteristics required by the Church:

It is a place of pilgrimage It is a place of special devotion It is a center of historic significance for the Faith It is architecturally qualified for such an honor. It is artistically qualified for such an honor.

When Pope John Paul II visited the Mission in 1987 he said, “This serene and beautiful place is truly the histori-cal and spiritual heart of California.” And that’s why it is a basilica. This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Car-mel Mission Docent Association.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Some say tomato—and some say tomahto—you know the old song. What do you say when you arrive at church and see a font prepared, a baby in the wings, the paschal candle burning? Well, maybe you will say that “we’re having a baptism today,” or maybe you say “we are having a christening.” The proper term is baptism, since that is the name of the sacrament. But the persistent use of “christening” in our culture, probably from due to the influence of the Episcopal Church, is interesting. Baptism, an ancient word, is from the Greek meaning to dip or to dunk. Christening is an Old English word that describes perfectly well that more than getting splashed with water, the person being baptized is being “Christ-ed.” No matter what you call it, there’s always water involved, and then an anointing with chrism—fragrant olive oil conse-crated as a sign of Christ’s presence—poured upon the brow as we say, “As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life.” So, in being Christ-ed, you are conformed to his image, your life is expected to be a retelling of his life in miniature and you—even though you may be squirming or sleeping—are commissioned to be a priest, a prophet, a king. This means that you are called to be one who worships, you are called to speak the truth, you are called to shape the world and exercise right judgment. That is the deepest treasure of our tradition, and every time you gather to cele-brate a baptism, you renew your vows precisely so that you can be more “Christ-ed.” No matter what vocabulary you assign to the liturgy, the key is trans-formation of the human person in the community of the Body of Christ. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The Heart of JSS

This photo of Carmel Mission’s Junipero Serra School taken near the last day of the 2015 – 2016 school year captures the spirit of Catholic education. I thank you for all the support the parish has given the school and me over the last two years and ask you to continue your support of JSS and Mr. Bruce Stewart, the School’s new principal. I share with you one of my favorite passages from Scripture with deepest gratitude. This, then, is what I pray, kneeling before the Father, from whom every family, whether spiritual or natural, takes its name: Out of God’s infinite glory, may He give you the power through His Spirit for your hidden self to grow strong, so that Christ may live in your hearts through faith, and then, planted in love and built on love, you will with all the saints have strength to grasp the breadth and the length, the height and the depth; until, knowing the love of Christ, which is beyond all knowledge, you are filled with the utter fullness of God. Glory be to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine; glory be to God from generation to generation in the Church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:14 – 21) Love God; love each other! Always forward, never back! Mary Ellen Ryan
