Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. While each member of the Holy Family, Jesus, Mary and Joseph, have their own individual feasts, this day commemorates their life together as a family. Coptic Christians have honored the Holy Family from early Christianity, as the flight into Egypt is a crucial part of the Holy Family’s narrative. In the Western church, devotion to the Holy Family as a unit did not rise to prominence until the 17th Century, and it was not made an official feast day until 1929. Originally celebrated the Sunday after Epiphany, the feast was moved to the Sunday after Christmas in 1969 to bring it within the Christmas season. The holiday time brings a focus on family in both the sacred and secular realms. This can bring great joy but also complications to families who are struggling within their relationships. Families come in all shapes and sizes with seemingly never ending complexities, and we can imagine even within the Holy Family there may have been challenges on day-to-day basis, but their example of unconditional love, devotion and commitment to one another encourages us in our own family lives. How can the example of the Holy Family help to heal and strengthen your family relationships? DOCENT CORNER La Véspera de Navidad La Véspera de Navidad, Christmas Vespers, what we call Christmas Eve, was a favorite time for young children in Spanish and Mexican California. At the ranchos and the mission pueblos like Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, the children would climb onto the flat tile covered roofs of the adobes. From this position, they could look down on the festivities. Rancheros rode into town or one of the mission settlements in elaborate dress. Some came on horseback with beautifully tooled and silver inlaid saddles. Others arrived in carretas (ox carts). The carretas were colorfully decorated for the feast of the Nativity, a practice begun during Europe's middle ages. Christmas Eve was also called La Noche Buena, "The Good Night." The celebration centered on the Midnight or Vigil mass celebrated both in the mission churches and in private chapels at the larger ranchos. This was often followed by the presentation of Los Pastorelas (the shepherds). Young people in appropriate costume would act out the roles of the events in Bethlehem as described in the Gospel of Luke. This was accompanied by the notes of a sprightly guitar. The performance, following a 2 hour long midnight mass, would be enlivened with a great deal of comic relief. In the pueblos, the party might continue with a Posadas, going from house to house, emulating the Holy Family in its search for shelter, celebrated nightly from December 16th to the 24th. Fr. Florencio Ibáñez of Soledad Mission in the Salinas Valley composed a special Pastorelas for the arrival of the Royal Governor, José Arrilaga in 1800. This became the favorite version of the play. A copy of it is in the Mariano Vallejo papers in the Bancroft Library. The piñata ceremony remains a favorite at Christmastide, usually connected with the Las Posadas celebrations. The blindfolded children were given long sticks for breaking the thin pottery shell in the form of a multicolored animal. A good hit was scored, and the piñata showered cactus candies and tiny gifts on the children. This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association.

Next Selection, Carmel Mission Book Club The next selection for the Carmel Mission Book Club is Bishop Robert Barron’s The Strangest Way: Walking the Christian Path. In the spirit of C. S. Lewis’ [Mere Christianity], this book is a powerful introduction to the way of Jesus Christ. “At its very center,” writes Bishop Barron, “is a God who comes after us with reckless abandon, breaking open His own heart in love ………. to include us in his own life.” This book has been called “luminous, challenging, wondrous, and grace-laden” by Christian theologians and writers, who “could hardly put it down” according to one. The Book Club meets Saturdays at 2pm at MacMahon Center, and begins this selection January 6th. Refreshments are provided. All are welcome. Attendance and the book are free; a goodwill donation to cover the book and shipping is requested but not required.

New Designed Door Handle for the Carmel Mission Basilica During the feast day of Our Lady Guadalupe, a new customized door handle was installed to one of the historic front doors of the Carmel Mission Basilica. This unique bronze handle was specially designed,

forged and fashioned over the last several months by Alan Drew the blacksmith artist and owner of Winter Drew Design. Alan Drew’s initial design included the image of the Caravaca Cross on the backplate of the door. During these first design meetings, Pastor Father Paul Murphy shared the significance of the cross and that the inclusion of the crucifix of Saint Junípero Serra as an important element to include in the design. Upon learning the full significance and reflecting on the history of the Caravaca Cross, Alan Drew reconceived the design and the cross was made the focus of the bronze door handle. Additionally, the final cross design incorporated faithful measurements derived from a replica of the original Saint Junípero Serra Caravaca Cross.

The craftsmanship put into the creation of the new bronze door handle utilized both modern and ancient techniques. The beaded door handle was fashioned from a

special forgeable silicon bronze which is especially resistant to the elements. The bronze backplate was shaped from s hand drawn template design. This templet was digitized and the backplate was cut from a sheet of bronze with a fine aggregate water jet. The backplates, intricate borders were created with a handmade chisel called a “Schnekker”. The cutting edge of this tool resembles a fingernail and it is useful for creating the detailed curved lines found typically in Romanesque and Gothic metalwork. The fishtail scroll was forged by a process called “fullering”, which produces the deep grooves. The elements of the handle were brought together by way of traditional mortise and tenon techniques and bronze rivets which reinforced the bond between the handle and the backplate.
