ALTAR SERVER MINISTRY

Altar servers carry the cross, hold the Roman Missal for the Priest, prepare the altar for the Liturgy of the Eucharist, assist the Priest in receiving the gifts from the people, assist in the washing of the hands, and all that is necessary during Mass. This is an excellent opportunity to be involved and play an active role in the celebration of the Mass. Youth, fifth grade or older, and adult pa-rishioners are invited to join our ministry. If you are interested or have any questions about the altar server ministry, please contact the Parish Office or Joe Fellores at 206-525-8602.

Dear Friends,

Last week as I was leaving Mass, and then again when leaving the office one evening, I saw people sitting on the bench in front of the church intently looking at their phones. It seems we are part of the Pokemón Go! phenomena, with our campus being a gym site. (I admit I don’t fully understand that statement, except to say that people can come here as part of the game.)

The people I saw were having a great deal of fun and were working on their phones with great enthusiasm. I know that there have been stories of unsafe conditions and poor choices made by people playing the game, but when played rea-sonably and responsibly, it seems like a fine summer activity.

But it made me think about how connected we can become to our phones, and how willing we are to trust them. While I don’t play the Pokemón Go! game, I do use my phone every day to help me navigate through Seattle traffic. I turn on streets that are new to me, despite being raised in Seattle, fully trusting that my phone knows more than I do in the situa-tion.

So what does this have to do with parish life, and why am I rambling on in the bulletin about this? Well, this week, I have been wondering why I seem to trust my phone more than I trust God some days. Those times when I feel an urging to talk to a person begging on the street but feel uncomfortable and don’t, or when I have a sense that I should call an old friend and don’t take the time or stop by to visit someone who is lonely but think I’m too busy.

This week, let’s try to capture the enthusiasm of all the Pokemón players and pray that God will direct us where to go and what to do this week – to capture moments of joy, peace and hope in this world that desperately needs it.

Let’s continue to pray for one another, Marti Lundberg

FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD On Saturday we celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord. A re-minder about the depth of mystery that surrounded Jesus Christ — mystery in the sense that we can never exhaust who he really is or categorize him in any way. Fully human, he may indeed have needed a tent or a place to camp on the mountain, like Pe-ter asked. But just when the Apostles may have been getting really comfortable with their understanding of Jesus as friend and teacher they catch a glimpse of his heavenly glory, challenging them to remain open to Christ communicating to them who he is as Son of God. We have moments like the Apostles with a new and challenging image of God in the Scriptures. Remaining hum-ble and open to the revelatory action of God’s Word and Spirit is a way to enter ever more deeply into the mystery of who God is for us in Jesus Christ. (2016 Sourcebook pgs. 264-265)

ST. ALPHONSUS LIGOURI Following a successful career as a lawyer, St. Alphonsus Ligouri (1696-1787) lost a legal case which he believed to be a sign from God that he should change his ways and study for the priest-hood. At the suggestion of a bishop friend, he founded the Con-gregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, also known as the Re-demptorists, a community of priests dedicated to preaching, hear-ing confessions, and administering the sacraments. One of his most important contributions to the Church is his prolific writing in the area of moral theology. Also included among his writings are many devotional works regarding Mary and the saints. He influ-enced the Church not only through his writings, but also through his leadership as a bishop. Due to his many accomplishments, he was declared a Doctor of the Church and is recognized as one of the greatest moral theologians in Church history. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 264)

WORLD YOUTH DAY 2016! Let’s continue to pray for Fr. Bryan, Lucy, and all the pilgrims at World Youth Day in Poland. May God watch over and bless their time there bringing them all home safely to spread the word of Christ.

"In prayer we are a pair: God and me, fighting togeth-er for what is important. Among these, there is one, the great important thing, which Jesus tells us today in the Gospel, but which we hardly ever consider, and it is the Holy Spirit: 'Grant to me the Holy Spirit!’” ~~Pope Francis 2016

ST. JOHN VIANNEY Although he was not academically astute and had to receive his training privately, John (1789-1859) was ordained a priest due to his virtue and is the patron of parish priests. He was stationed in a small village, Ars-en-Dombes, in France, where he became a noted catechist, confessor, and spiritual director. Soon, he gained a reputation for working miracles, such as multiplying loaves and physical healings. Consequently, the small village became a place of pilgrimage, attraction over 300 visitors a day, from 1830 to 1845, to see the “Curé d’Ars.” Special train schedules as well as a special booking office had to be established in the nearby city of Lyons to accommodate the steady stream of visitors. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 264)

SCHOOL NEWS

ST. MARTIN de PORRES SEEKING FUNDS Thank you for your generous donations and join us when you can. Our ministry group meets the first and third Monday’s of the month to make sandwiches for the 225 homeless men of the shelter. In an effort to keep the min-istry alive, we are seeking both monetary funds and vol-unteers. If each parish family donated $5.00 per month, we will continue to be able to make a difference. If you are looking for a summer project for your children to help out, we accept donations of boiled eggs and cookies. We are also looking for sandwich makers as we lose our school volunteers for the summer months. Our next sandwich making day is Monday August 1

LIMULUNGA ON THE MOVE Two weeks ago we hatched the biggest number of quails - 370 in a day. We are collecting over 200 eggs every day and we are giving out eggs and chicks to women’s groups for women empower-ment. We bought a third incubator last week which loads 2600 eggs because we are now collecting over 250 eggs per day. Now we are hatching over 500 chicks on Tuesday and another on Fri-day. We continue to sell quail under our own label and will update all on our pro-gress very soon. Thank you to our sis-ter church St. Benedict Catholic Church, Seattle.
