Happy Father’s Day to all fathers and the people who assume this role in the life of another. You are to be treasured for all that you do. I revised this article that I wrote a little while back to reflect my thoughts today.

There are many definitions of a FATHER. A father is a person who gives birth to a child; a person who adopts a child; a person who sees the need to nurture a child and just steps in; a person who makes every effort to make the life of a child better because of their presence. Anyone reading this might qualify as a father by this definition. Our memories vary and our experiences differ. Reflecting on fatherhood, we can agree that being a father or assuming the role of a father can be daunting. This Father’s Day, the focus on the qualities and traits that make a person special are worth repeating. In 1909, a woman, Sonora Smart Dodd, decided to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a civil war veteran and a widower who raise her and her five siblings as a single parent. On June 19, 1910, President Woodrow Wilson declared this day as Father’s Day, but it was not until 1972 that the day became a nationwide holiday. The qualities of a good father are many and varied. I now recall the traits and qualities of my own dad, Carmen. My dad was a special man in the lives of so many and he was larger than life itself. He along with many possess the qualities that make a person the FRIEND we all love. Let us take time to reflect on the following: FRIEND “A friend loves at all times.” Proverbs 17:17 “ A sweet friendship refreshes the soul.” Proverbs 27:9 ANCHOR “To realize the worth of the anchor, we need to feel the storm.” Isaiah 26:3 “Our hope is the anchor for our soul.” Hebrews 6:19 TEACHER “Teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always to the end of this age.” Matthew 28:20 HERO “The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him.” Proverbs 20:7 EXPLORER “The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:19 “You are the light that gives light to the world.” Matthew 5:14 ROLE MODEL “So that the world may know that I love the Father, I do exactly as the Father commanded me.” John 14:31 “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13
