Vancouver BC was incorporated 29 years after the name was

first used to reference Fort Vancouver, originally established in

the 1820s as a fur trading post on the Columbia River.

The Chinookan and Klickitat names for the area were reported-

ly Skit-so-to-ho and Ala-si-kas, respectively, meaning "land of

the mud-turtles."

The “Pioneer Mother Memorial” statue commemorates pioneer mothers

who settled in the Pacific Northwest. It resides in Esther Short Park next to

the Hilton.

Short and her husband were among the first U.S. citizens to arrive in Fort

Vancouver. After her husband died in a shipwreck at the mouth of the Co-

lumbia River, she bequeathed part of their land as a public plaza In 1862, and

operated Alta House, a restaurant and hotel at a nearby ferry dock.
