Step 1: Get off the hamster wheel.

Working hard, and not getting anywhere.

To plan ahead effectively, you need to extend your GOAL HORIZON.

What will you have achieved by 2015?

Can you see, in your mind’s eye, where your business will be in 2015?

Step 3: Choose a goal you truly believe in.

If you don’t believe it yourself....

BTW – You goal should not be about money.

Money is a terrible long-term motivator.

You may need lots of money, but making it can’t be your GOAL.

Make sure your goal is aligned with your values.

Is it truly “you”?

If not, you’ll never put 100% into it.

Step 4: Plan, execute and adjust.

Stating your goal is not enough.

So you want to get from New York to Detroit.

This is how most freelancers set their goals. “I want to get to Detroit!” “I WILL get to Detroit!”

But where are the roads? What route will you take? Where will you stop for gas?

You need a route or path, with waypoints along the way.

Now you know how to get to Detroit, and you know where you need to drive, road by road, city by city.

Here is how it looks…to start with.

Here is how it really works, with waypoints.

Put your plan on paper.

If you are not tracking your progress, you really don’t have a real plan.

Monitor past performance and future estimates.

Know where your money is coming from.

Align everything you do with your goal.

Helping people:

Make money writing websites. As a freelancer, or for yourself.

Always keep track of where the money comes from.

Everything remains aligned with your goal, but you are still tracking and optimizing your income streams.

In addition to your principal, long-term goal…add some parallel,

supporting goals.

In 2011, I will:

• Focus on social media to expand my network of peers and advocates.

• Add another stream of income.

• Begin outsourcing some aspects of my business.

• Etc…

While going for your medium-term goals, also consider the very long

term.

In the longer term, as I approach retirement, I want all my income to be passive.

The most important part…

Keep an eye on your map, and make sure you are on the right road.

To summarize…

• Choose a goal you can believe in.

• Commit to your goal absolutely (It shouldn’t be an effort.)

• Establish your route and your waypoints.

• Watch where the money is coming from.

• Monitor, track and adjust.
