By Rich RosentreterA local Boy scout

and member of the Lumberjacks football team is finishing up on his Eagle Scout project, and the student discussed his progress last week at the Tupper Lake School Board of Education’s monthly meeting.

Scout Brandon Picerno is working on converting an unused area near the Frank Tice Memorial Football Field and turning it into a parking lot that can be utilized by school workers, football players from both home and visiting teams among others. The project is part of the Boy Scout “mission” in which at the end of one’s scouting career, the member has to do an Eagle Scout project.

In the case of Picerno’s Eagle Scout duty, the concept of using the area near the football field for practical purposes came about when Football Coach Dennis Klossner told him that: “It would be nice to turn that into a parking lot!”

The space had been filled with mounds of dirt, old football sleds and other metal debris such as old desks and file cabinets that have since been removed and recycled with the help of local businessmen. Michael Vaillancourt helped Picerno use torches to cut apart the sleds and Gerry Fletcher donated a roll-off container to place the metal in to be recycled.

“Everything will be pretty much recycled,” Picerno said.

“It will be a 22-space parking lot that can be used for students and players like myself when we go to football games,” Picerno also explained to the school board. “I know other teams have vans that they bring the equipment in and they can park there.”

Before Picerno’s idea was approved, he said he had to run it past members

The project is expected to be completed in another week or two with the final step being to add crusher material, which will also be donated.

After Picerno made his project presentation to the school board, he explained why he became a Scout and his dedication to becoming an Eagle Scout.

“It looks good on a resume,” Picerno said, adding that potential employers can make a character determination. “The may say ‘he’s been dedicated since he was young, I’d like to pick him

for the position or job’.”He also recognized

his parents for giving him the motivation to continue along the path to Eagle Scout.

“They’ve pushed me a lot, especially when I was lazy!” he said, adding that a big part of the Scout process is community

involvement and making sure his fellow troop members learn about leadership.

“The big thing is involvement by my community and troop,” Picerno said. “It’s a community thing. I need to show leadership!”
