Quiero agradecer a

Reverendo Miguel A. González

Dear St. James Cathedral Family,

We continue to celebrate with joy the Glory of Easter

Sunday! We find ourselves in the upper room behind

closed doors, with the disciples of the risen Lord. Two of

the disciples, devastated by the brutal crucifixion of their

Master, decided to grieve their loss, by walking to a town

called Emmaus. Along the way the Lord appeared to them,

but they failed to recognize Him. Doubts, confusion, and

sadness impaired their ability to recognize Jesus. Their

eyes were opened when at supper Jesus breaks the bread,

and gives it to them. They had said to each other:

“Weren’t our hearts burning when He spoke to us along

the way? It’s true He has risen!” Today’s Gospel continues

the beautiful Emmaus story by connecting us with the return

of the two disciples to Jerusalem, as they shared with the

other disciples what they had witnessed. Each passage that

connects us with the risen Lord allows us to discover not

only a powerful encounter with Him, but an instruction to

go and share the Good News.

This weekend at the 4:00, 9:00, and 10:30AM Masses, children

will be receiving their First Holy Communion. Like the

two disciples on their way to Emmaus these children are

concluding a journey that has led them to the banquet Jesus

has prepared for us all. I want to thank Ms. Renee Jones

and her wonderful team of catechists that have prepared

the children for their First Communion. I also wish to

thank Mrs. Dawn Helwig and the faculty of St. James Cathedral

School, for supporting our Sacramental Preparation program

for children.

May the Resurrected Lord continue to nourish us with the

gift of His Body and Blood in order for us to give witness

of what He continues to do for us.

In Christ,

Very Reverend Miguel A. González

Question for Children: Name some times when you know Jesus is with you. Question for Youth: What are some ways that you know that God is with you? Who are the people, where are the place, and what are the occasions when you feel closest to God? Question for Adults: When have you had an "Aha" moment, when you suddenly realized that God was with you?

A final decision? Before they left their faith, the young former Catholics were involved in the Church to varying extents. Twenty-eight percent told CARA that they rarely or never attended Mass at the time when they considered themselves Catholic. Only 17 percent surveyed said that they attended Mass weekly when they were Catholic. Three-fourths of the respondents never attended a Catholic school. Eighty-seven percent of these former Catholics said that their decision to leave the Church is final. Vitek noted that “this is a response given at a particular point in their life and they can’t predict the future. So there is always hope for the believing community.” Studies do show, however, that “more and more, once a person chooses to disaffiliate from the Church they are not re-affiliating later in life,” he added. As for what the Church can do to prevent young people from rejecting their faith, Vitek recommends, “We need to create a place where young people can freely wrestle with their questions of faith, including their doubt…” “We found that young people want to talk about their faith but they aren’t sure if they can without judgment,” he said.
