KABUL - A Taliban commander and a fighter of the group were killed in separate Improvised Explo-sive Device explosions which went off prematurely in northern Baghlan and central Logar provinces.The Ministry of Interior (MoI) in a statement said a local Taliban commander who was planting an im-provised explosive device in Dand-e-Shahabuddin area of Baghlan province was killed when the ex-plosives went off prematurely.The statement further added that the incident took place at around 8pm local time on Wednesday night.The ministry in a separate statement said a Taliban fighter was killed as he was transferring an impro-vised explosive device in Kharwar district of Logar province.The anti-government armed militants including Taliban have not commented regarding the inci-dents so far.Taliban militants frequently use improvised explo-sive devices as the weapons of their choice to target the security forces and government personnel but in majority of such attacks ordinary civilians are targeted. MAZAR-I-SHARIF - Poultry farmers in northern Balk province complain of smuggling of expired chicken meat from Pakistan, a practice harming the local industry.The Poultry Union head asked the gov-ernment to work for self-sufficiency of the sector by establishing more farms. Currently chicken meat is being pro-duced in 800 different poultry farms in the northern zone.Bashir Ahmad Muzdah, head of the Poultry Farms Union, told Pajhwok Afghan News many of the poultry farms import chicks from Pakistan and brought them up in these farms.He rejected rumours that northern provinces would become self-sufficient in chicken meat production.“Unfortunately, I have to say the ex-isting poultry farms are functional be-cause of the chicks imported from Pa-kistan, Therefore, local production of chicks cannot grow,” argued Muzhda.He said 60 factories were producing chicks in Afghanistan but due to lack of government attention, they were faced with multiple problems.Muzhda said 40,000 to 50,000 chicks were imported into Mazar-i-Sharif every 24 hours and after they grow in some days, the meat is sent to neigh-bouring provinces --- Faryab, Jawzjan and Sar-i-Pul.He said the government, businessmen and common people preferred import-ed meatm something taht negatively impacted the local industry.In addition, Muzhda termed the smug-gling of expired chicken meat from Pa-kistan another factor hampering local production.Rahmanullah, a resident of Balkh, said he kept 25,000 to 30,000 chickens in his farm and sold them after they grew.He launched the business 10 years ago with little start-up money.
