Mar 19 Exodus 17:1-7 Romans 5:1-11 “Hope in the Desert” Mar 25 Psalm 23 1 Samuel 16:1-13 “Judgement” Today’s my first day back from study leave and it feels great!! I missed you all very much and feel like I’m out of the loop on important stuff. (Not to mention behind in my work!) Many thanks to Glory for preaching and to Jeffrey for teaching Sunday School in my absence – hearing nothing but good things about both of you. As I write this it’s Monday morning, so I’ve come back just in time for Lent. As you know, Lent begins with our Ash Wednesday service at 7:00 P.M. on March 1st. It’s the first of many special services during this season: Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Fri- day, and Easter Sunday. Glory is preaching on Palm Sunday! Maundy Thursday, April 13, will be celebrat- ed as it was last year, with a dinner (served by our elders), a service, and communion, all in Fellowship Hall. On Good Friday we’ll have our traditional Tene- brae Service, which many of you tell me is the service that impacts you more than any other. I love it, too. And Easter is all about that resurrection joy! So there’ll be more “church” than usual. Is that good news or bad news for you? There are as many differ- ent ideas about the importance of attending worship as there are individuals. Some folks are extremely faithful about coming on Sunday mornings, but that’s it – they don’t come for special services or ministry events. Others are here every time the doors open. And many fall somewhere in between. But as you know, it’s just not the same world it was a few decades ago. I just read an article saying that some folks call themselves “regular church attendees” if they come once every 6 weeks. Oh, dear. I got terribly homesick for you all, and for our worship, in just 2 weeks! (Yes, I know I’m a bit of a fanatic about church. Have been for the last 40 years.) Scrip- ture describes us as the Body of Christ – Jesus’ body here on earth, to love and forgive and reach out and help and share the gospel and, day in and day out, show the world what the love of Jesus Christ actually looks like and does. It’s a tall order! Maybe that’s why Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not ne- glecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” We need each other! We need to learn, worship, and serve together, as a Body; develop strong friendships and be accountable to one another; encourage each other as we walk the path of discipleship together … because it’s rarely an easy path, is it? Life can be hard! As I’m sure you’ve heard before, we don’t come to worship as spectators, waiting to be entertained. Nei- ther should we come to criticize or complain. We bring the Spirit with us, and if we come prepared to love God and give to and receive from him, we’ll never be disappointed. And we get to do all this with people we love, our good friends! So be happy it’s Lent. Come every Sunday and come to every special service. The One who watches over us neither slumbers nor sleeps; can’t we give him a little extra time occasionally? And come with your heart open, ready to be filled with God’s love, and ready to share his love with all the rest of us! Much love to each of you. And I’ll see you in church! DISCIPLESHIP

Hello SPC, We are so grateful for all of your generosity for the Sweetheart Luncheon! Thanks to your kind donations we were able to raise $411! More information will be coming this month about where and when we are going on our summer trip. Thank you for helping us make the trip possible! We will be having another fundrais-er for the month of March. This one is a little different. We will have envelopes numbered 1-75 available in the narthex. The number that you take is the amount of money you are committing to fill the envelope with. So if you take envelope number 38, you will return it with $38. If you take envelope number 2, you only have to put in $2! Some of the larger numbers you may not have the money to fill by yourself, but maybe you have friends, family, or coworkers who can help! So if you take the envelope for $75 you can take it to work and ask some of your coworkers to help pitch in and fill up your envelope. Just let them know you are raising money for the Stockbridge Presbyterian Youth Group summer mis-sion trip. This campaign will run from March 5-March 26. March 26 is when your envelope is due back with the amount of money written on the front (or whatever you were able to raise.) This is an easy way for everyone to take a sin-gle goal that will add up once everyone turns their envelopes in. Be on the look out for the envelopes very soon! The youth will be having a lock-in on Friday March 24-25. We will have snacks, games, a devotion, see the movie “The Shack”, and several projects to work on! We are working on a special worship project for Easter that’s easy and a lot of fun. We will also be filling gift bags for the Children’s Hospital of Atlan-ta, and we will work on a banner to “Toon Out Cancer” for the Relay for Life! This will be a fun time to spend together doing good work for our community and having time for fun and fellowship. We will start the lock-in at 7pm and begin

Worship: Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent in the Western Christian calendar. It occurs exactly 46 days before Easter (40 fasting days not counting Sundays). Ash Wednesday is named after the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a reminder of human mortality, and as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. Mark your calen-dars for our Ash Wednesday Service on March 1, 2017 @ 7:00 PM in the Sanctu-ary. Christian Education: As many of you are aware, ADULT Sun-day School is WELL ATTENDED and is going strong….not so much for our youth. After much prayer and discussion, the session has voted to cancel Youth Sun-day School (ages preschool and elemen-tary) due to lack of attendance effective March 1, 2017 . Middle School – College are welcome in the Adult Sunday School Classes. HOWEVER, do not be discour-aged. We are NOT giving up on our youth! Be sure to look for new and excit-ing options coming soon. We are dis-cussing suggestions to expand the “Children’s Church” program that is well attended with added options that will be more appealing to our youth of all ages during the worship hour. More to come and suggestions are welcome. In Service, Laura & Stephanie

with snacks and games. We will have a devotion and work on 2 of our pro-jects. We will catch a late night viewing of “The Shack” and come back to play games (or maybe get a little sleep?) The next morning we will wake up and have breakfast together and work on our Relay for Life banner. We will leave around 11am. The only cost for this event will be the price of the movie ticket to see “The Shack.” Please feel free to invite friends! This will be a great time together. Blessings, Glory Cumbow
