In line with Government and Church of England guidance all public worship and other face to face church activities have been cancelled.
However, that does not mean that the church has closed:
In the meantime, our ministers, Rob & Hugh, are continuing to pray daily with and for us.
Many church members are involved in helping their neighbours with shopping, prescriptions, etc, and quite a few are sewing or baking for schemes that have sprung up to support NHS staff and other key workers.
The government has recently announced that churches may re-open for personal private prayer. All Saints Church is now open during the day and we hope that we will be able to have Holy Trinity Church open as well soon.
We have a weekly sheet of thoughts and prayers based on the main Sunday Bible reading – if you’d like to be added to the mailing list, please let us know by email at [email protected] or by phone 07766 444873.
We continue to join with Stansted Church for a Zoom service at 9.30am every Sunday morning – you can find the direct link for that in our weekly email and on our website www.tlcchurch.co.uk.
And we are also posting a video on our Facebook page at 10.45am each Sunday: tlcchurches.
At the end of May we had an inspiring service to celebrate Pentecost, when we joined together with Stansted and Dunmow churches over Zoom. Well over 120 people ‘together’.

FROM THE MINISTERS
‘ It is interesting how discussions have changed over the last three months of ‘lockdown’.
At first there was disappointment – not seeing school friends, no proper Easter break, no church services.
Then fear – as the pandemic grew and spread rapidly.
Then resignation – as time went on.
Now, perhaps, frustration – as we want to get ‘back to normal’.
Except that we won’t ‘get back to normal’!
Nothing will ever be the same again, and some things should never be the same again.
The killing of George Floyd in America has provoked so much outrage and unleashed pent-up anger over discrimination – surely things need to change significantly across the world to ensure that everyone is treated equally.
Marcus Rashford’s brave telling of his own story, and his magnificent fund-raising efforts, have led to a u-turn for the government – belatedly recognising that things need to change here, so that the most vulnerable and under-privileged are given an equal chance to reach their potential.
Football matches without the fans present, theatres without audiences, restaurants with no diners, pubs with no drinkers, swimming pools with no swimmers – no ‘end of lockdown’ for them yet.
When will we be able to visit our more vulnerable relatives and give them a hug again without masks and face shields in the way?
Churches without a congregation, with no singing, no refreshments afterwards . . .
What will the world be like in a year’s time? Will social distancing, quarantine, part-time and home-schooling, home-working and empty skies be the norm or part of recent history?
Or will an effective vaccine have been found, everyone immunised and 2020 seen as a bad dream by many?
Except, of course, for the families that have been hit hardest by the pandemic, losing loved ones to the virus; and all those whose mental and physical health has taken a knock as a result of fear, isolation and inactivity.
We have always lived in an uncertain world, more so if you include human behaviour in the equation!

On my holiday to India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food.
We booked an excursion to a water park, but no one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price.
The beach was too sandy. We had to clean everything when we returned to our room.
No one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared.
It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair.
I was bitten by a mosquito. The brochure did not mention mosquitoes.

Local Hospice launches Bereavement Café online communities to support those experiencing grief
during coronavirus lockdown
St Clare Hospice is launching online bereavement support for people across West Essex and East Hertfordshire in an effort to diversify their service amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and support those experiencing grief during ‘lockdown’. The new service consists of a series of seven local Bereavement Café online community Facebook Groups, which cover Harlow, Hastingwood, Abridge, Ongar, Theydon Bois, Dunmow, and a Group for young people (aged 18-30) called Youth Bereavement Café. Community Engagement Manager at St Clare Hospice, Sally Muylders, is leading the project and said: “Coping with bereavement and loss is always difficult, but in the current climate, people may be finding it harder than ever. Many people are grieving in isolation – they may have lost a loved one recently, and now find themselves cut off from their usual support networks due to the lockdown measures. Or, their loved one may have died longer ago, but the grief they feel is heightened by the physical social isolation they are now faced with. More than ever, St Clare can see that our role as a local hospice charity is to offer immediate, local, bereavement support to those who are experiencing death, dying and loss in our communities. Bereavement Cafés offer a place to meet and connect with other local people who may have had a similar experience, and to chat, share and support each other around coping with grief and loss. The café events are open to anyone who has experienced bereavement, no matter how long ago, and are free to attend. Since the national COVID-19 lockdown began on 23rd March 2020, the Bereavement Cafés have had to be postponed and cannot take place for the foreseeable future. The Community Engagement team have been working hard to take the project online so that bereaved local people can be supported ‘virtually’ during the lockdown period. But one thing is always certain – that God loves us, and his love forgives, comforts and guides us whatever is going on around us.
I am reminded of the hymn that’s sometimes sung at funerals:
In heavenly love abiding, no change my heart shall fear;
and safe is such confiding, for nothing changes here:
the storm may roar without me, my heart may low be laid;
but God is round about me, and can I be dismayed?
May you know the peace of God in your hearts at this time.

TAKELEY PARISH COUNCIL
RESPONSE TO COVID-19
Given the current situation regarding COVID-19 and the advice provided by the Government, it has been agreed that Takeley Parish Council will not hold any public meetings until further notice.
The council will continue to operate as normal but will make use of different communication channels, as appropriate.
The Council recognises that some of our residents may need some help over the coming weeks and months, so we have set up a team of volunteers to help out in any way that people may need it, such as shopping or helping obtain medication if needed.
Cllr Pat Burnett will act as co-ordinator and will put you in touch with your local ‘volunteer’ as the need arises.
Pat can be contacted on 01279 870578 and will ensure that we get someone to you as soon as possible.
Please note that whilst we are in this situation we would ask people to be extra vigilant before answering the door to anyone, as we are aware that a number of people are already taking advantage of the situation.

Since round about March 12th 2020, we were all asked to stay at home and social distance, unable to meet with family and friends who didn’t live in the same house, which for many has been really hard to do. I for one have found it extremely hard not to see and hug my daughters and grandchildren.
This virus, and the consequences of it, have brought fear of not knowing and uncertainty. The virus we are told is virulent and life threatening, and to add to the fear, we are told, there is no vaccine. Then it all seems to be confirmed when we see or read in the news that hundreds of people have died in a day, and it is set to get worse.
And on top of all that there has been the violent death of a black man, George Floyd, while being arrested by police in America. In consequence there have been many peaceful demonstrations but other parts of the world seem to have gone completely mad and out of control with rioting, looting and violent demonstrations that have spilled over into this country and Europe. You simply cannot make this stuff up? You have to ask yourself, what is going on?
The Bible tells us in Matthew 24:7, Nation shall war against Nation, and Kingdom against Kingdom, there will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world.”
Some of the ancient Bible writings were in Greek as well as in Hebrew, and translated, the word, “Nation” in Greek, is Ethnos. It is where we get the English word ethnic from, and today we see ethnic group going against ethnic group. Just as the Bible said it would. But the Bible also tells us “don’t let your hearts be troubled, trust in God, trust also in Me” John,14:1.
It is so easy to blame God for all the troubles and absolute madness of the world, when in fact, most of the troubles and stupid madness we encounter are of our own doing. Yet despite all this madness. God never gives up on us, he still loves us very much. Put your trust and faith in him.
Thank you, Dear God, for your Love, your Mercy, and Your Grace. Amen.

This month also marks a changeover in Area Dean.
The Area Dean is one of the clergy across the deanery – an area which stretches from Farnham in the west to Great Saling in the east, Great Bardfield in the north to Beauchamp Roding in the south!
Their role is to organise us, keep us in touch with what’s happening across the wider diocese and encourage the churches to work together.
Revd Cilla Hawkes, who lives in Felsted, has just stepped down from that role.
Revd Helen Pelly, who lives in Bardfield Saling, has just been appointed as our new Area Dean.

CHURCH FINANCES
As you may appreciate the current lockdown is having a really detrimental effect on church income. The absence of collections and other donations means that we are currently losing out on about £200 per week. Additionally, most of our planned fund-raising events for later in the year (which amount to an additional £150 per week) have now also been cancelled.
Even though the church buildings are closed, most of the bills continue at the same rate as before. Our largest outgoing is the Parish Share which we pay to the diocese in order to pay the clergy, and we have temporarily had to suspend our contribution to this. Next largest is the cost of insuring our two buildings.

The search to find the next Bishop of Chelmsford
is underway
In April Bishop Stephen Cottrell left his role of Bishop of Chelmsford after nearly a decade in post. In early July he will become the Archbishop of York.
The process to discern who God is calling to be the next Bishop of Chelmsford is underway and a diocesan consultation is open until 4th July.
The diocese wants to hear from as many people as possible.

DEATH, BE NOT PROUD
At a time when a much-loved village character has been taken from us, the poem in which John Donne mocks death and its pretentions seems appropriate:
Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think’st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul’s delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than they stroke; why swell’st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally
And death shall be no more: Death, thou shalt die.
In his last hours with his disciples, Jesus reassured them that he was going ahead to prepare a place for them in his – presumably, ever-expanding – Father’s house (John 14, 1-3).
We may have different pictures of this eternal home but, however we imagine it, we have Jesus’s word that it is real, and God welcomes us with open arms.
With this firmly in mind, we can face the fear of death undismayed. There is of course pain for those left behind, but only gain for the one who has gone ahead.
The NHS, the nation’s current object of quasi-worship, may be able to prolong a person’s life for a few more years; our God has the power to grant the highest quality of life for all eternity.

"On a cold wet morning in June and with social distancing still very much in evidence everywhere, it's great to be asked to contribute a few words for inclusion within this months Grapevine, which it's hoped will be distributed across the Parish within the next few weeks.........This gives me hope that things may at last be starting to return to some semblance of normality!
Whilst we have all been in 'lockdown' your Little Canfield Parish Councillors have continued to work hard in the background; conducting business as usual at monthly Zoom Council meetings, liaising with Councillors from other Parishes and making representations to Uttlesford District Council on matters of concern to our residents.
An achievement of note and worthy of mention, together with our thanks to Cllr Fulcher who presented LCPC objections to the Planning meeting, was the unanimous decision of Uttlesford District Council to reject the planning application of a Refuse Lorry Depot being sited on a green field within Hales Farm. The alternative proposal for a site located next to the Great Dunmow sewerage works and which was our preferred solution as it does not infringe on local residents and is well located for road, pedestrian and cycle access is now going forward to the next stage - fantastic news.
A reminder to everyone please that the play areas sited across the Parish still remain closed. Reports on Facebook recently seem to reference groups of young teenagers accessing the play areas and spending hours within them. Everyone is in agreement that social distancing and the closure of amenities is hard, but let's keep going and abide by the rules. As soon as the Parish Council is notified that the Play areas can be reopened - they will be.
Sadly the Garden waste skip service sited at Crumps farm will not be opening this season, we hope it will return next year.
We are still hoping to obtain two further white gates which will be sited at the the other end of Little Canfield. These gates will mirror the ones already erected at the entrance to the Village and I'm sure will enhance the aesthetics. Funding will be sourced via the local Highways panel as an 'improvement scheme' so no costs for the Parish
And finally......a polite note to dog owners that there are dog bins situated all around our village. Please use them. We live in a fantastic area, let's not have it spoilt.

Quarantine by James - Aged 11 The days grow a blur, as my street turns into a ghost town and how nature is
taking over, As we see ourselves bored or stuck at home in a prison of insanity,
While a virus is ruling the World, as we don’t have a vaccine, we are stuck in quarantine,
As we late night text, a world of social distance, kills joy everywhere you look, because no one can escape quarantine,
Is it communists in a lab making virus warfare or aliens passing time, or just a bat who just drank a nice cold corona?
But none of that matters as we are stuck in quarantine.
Everything I do, I am doing it alone because they told me to work at home,
I have never felt more lonely than I have in quarantine,
My holidays are cancelled, I can’t see my friends, even with a pet the boredom never seems to end,
I am starting to do things, I would have never done, Asda deliveries are so terrible, the food gets downgraded like an unhappy teacher seeing a student
cheat,
But we can’t do anything because we are stuck in quarantine.
All I have is a small garden, where you can’t even play catch and yet I still play like any other day,
I play video games like any other kid, I want PS Plus even though it cost a couple of quid,
Hand sanitiser is gold, so don’t waste it, so I’ve been told.
It really has hit the fan in quarantine.
Browsing the internet memes or watching films from 1960, you don’t brag, you don’t boast, your just stuck in someone else’s boat,
Celebs are moaning in their 30-bedroom mansions, saying stuff like “we’re in the same boat”,
Your boat is a yacht, my boat is cardboard,
So lay low,
but we can’t do anything in quarantine.

THE GARDENS OF
EASTON LODGE
We are now aiming to be open for our July 19 Open Day and we are keeping our fingers crossed for rain to help bring on more flowers. Please keep an eye on our website or Facebook page for our opening arrangements, as we are continuing to work on how we will operate within the Covid social distancing and hygiene rules www.eastonlodge.co.uk
The Gardens have survived remarkably well, despite the drought conditions through April, May and June. The trees, of course, have deep roots but can also suffer and shed branches as they age. The tree surgeons came in June to help them stay in good health, by taking off dead wood and thinning the crowns of particularly stressed trees.
Our volunteer gardeners are now back in force - getting back on top of the weeds and continuing with additional planting. One job which took our Trustee, Sue, a whole day was taking out duck weed from the lily pond. The lilies are spreading out now and showing the variety we have, white, yellow and a range of pinks. The Iavender is flowering, providing beautiful borders for the Italian Garden and the walled kitchen garden and a good larder for our bumble bees and butterflies. Our honey bees have also made a really good start to the year with all that early sunshine and spring blossom, so we should have lots of honey available for sale at the Gardens. We are also continuing to make our vegetables and fruit available through the Isolated Shop at Little Easton Manor.

Thank you for the knitted bags and purses, hats and glove puppets! We have some wonderful knitters in the parish!! And thank you too for donations of coloured pencils, notebooks etc.

As part of our home
learning this term Year 2
have been set a weekly
‘STEM’ activity (Science Technology
Engineering Mathematics). This particular
challenge involved using only
marshmallows and spaghetti to make a
tower. The children had to problem solve,
show ingenuity and resilience, having much
fun in the process. The tallest tower that a
child managed to make was 70cms! The
children (and their families) really enjoyed
the task and made some great towers. We
look forward to the next generation Great Exhibition…. and a new age edible

On 1st June 2020, Takeley Primary School welcomed a significantly
increased number of children back into all the classrooms across the school. The school looked very different – tables in rows with 2m intervals and yellow tape showing the children where to go and how to keep socially distanced when waiting for their lunch to be served. The children are in ‘bubbles’ to keep them protected, and they stay in those groups throughout the day. A huge well done to all the children who have been in school – the systems are working well. As a school, we are trying very hard to continue to support those children who are at home as well as the children in school.
In Year 1, we have begun to investigate Mexico, and have looked at the two Mexican artists, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo (who happen to have been married!) The children, both at home and at school have enjoyed trying to copy their style of art – Diego Rivera specialised in murals (wall painting) and Frida Kahlo specialised in self-portraits. We have also looked at the geography of Mexico and its physical position in the world attached to the United States of America. We have learned of the dramatically different climatic zones – from mountains and rainforest in the north, to deserts in the south. Soon we will be experiencing the delights of guacamole and fruit salad made from mango and papaya. The children have made sombreros, and learned to dance the traditional Mexican Hat Dance. Ole!

Cycle Security
Cycle security is always an issue with thefts from a variety of locations in-
cluding the town centre, residential areas, and educational establishments.
Commonly bicycles are either not secured or not secured properly, and this
makes it easy for thieves.
Where do they go? Number of places: - in a container abroad, to another
part of the country, stored in premises or sold as either a cycle or cycle parts
via the internet, or third parties.
By taking some appropriate precautions and using good quality security
products, and using them well, should help you to keep your property safe.
Use the best security you can afford. Don't secure a £2,000 bicycle with a
£20 lock! As a guide look to spend 10-15% of the value of the item on its
security. Look for a “Sold Secure” certified chain and padlock or “D – Lock”
preferably gold rated but certainly not below silver. Consider what you chain
it to whether at home or whilst out, is that secure? Is it well overlooked to
provide good natural surveillance?
Make a note of the frame number, security mark the cycle, there are a num-
ber of different methods available such as www.bikeregister.com,
www.datatag.co.uk , and www.retainagroup.com. Take a photograph of the
cycle and any areas of damage or marks of identification, and some insur-
ance companies may require one with the owner in the picture with it.
At home remove that first attraction to the thief or burglar: 1) don’t leave gar-
age doors open for long periods showing your expensive cycle and other
property, 2) consider a “Ground anchor” or “Shed shackle” within your shed
or garage to secure your cycle to, 3) look at your shed or garages security
and ensure you have good locks and that the hinges are protected, 4) con-
sider a shed alarm.
If you can its worth getting your children or grandchildren into good habits,
keeping their bikes secure and not leaving them discarded on the front lawn
or other, may save problems in the future.
Check with your insurance company to see what security standards
they require for your insurance cover to be valid.

Hello from everyone on the allotments,
I’ve just looked back at my last article which was written in the midst of Storm Ciara. What a difference we have had in the weather since then – the warmest Spring on records!
Although I am writing this at the beginning of June, we have already had a bumper crop of rhubarb and strawberries. This year I’ve managed to find a recipe for rhubarb, strawberry and ginger jam so I’m going to give that a go. I enjoy making jam but have had varying degrees of success at getting it to set!
Elsewhere on the allotment the crops are beginning to take off after the hard frost we had during the middle of May. Many members lost their beans but thankfully the potatoes have bounced back and there was still time to sow replacement beans. It’s now all about keeping everything watered and fed and making sure that the weeds stay at bay!
If you are interested in an allotment our Membership Secretary, Sam tells me that there is still a number of people currently on the waiting list, so It’s hard to say how long you will be waiting but if you contact Sam on [email protected] she will be happy to add you to the list and let you know periodically how things are progressing.
We are also on Facebook: search for Little Canfield Community Gardens and Allotments Association and someone will gladly add you to the group. Please do note that to get a plot, you must still e-mail Sam but you are more than welcome to join our Facebook group even if you have no intentions of taking on a plot but just want to see what we are doing.

News from Little Canfield Village Hall
As you can imagine although the Village Hall at Little Canfield has been closed to the public and Clubs since the onslaught of the pan-demic it has been busy. The Nursery has been open to key worker’s children.
We would like to thank Sue Brown and her dedicated staff for provid-ing this facility for those parents, whom with the Nursery, have been working throughout this period and continue to do so.
We have no thoughts of reopening the hall to the general public or clubs for the foreseeable future. This facility must be kept sanitised and safe for the children using it.
The Committee agreed to suspend hire charges to the Nursery throughout this period to ensure there are no financial restraints placed upon the Nursery during these unprecedented times.

Recently we have enjoyed above average hours of sunshine and walking or cycling along paths, bridleways and less busy roads has enabled us to admire the abundance of wildflowers and their insect visitors on field margins and wayside verges.
Many of these insects are the familiar pollinators such as butterflies, hoverflies and bees. For obvious reasons, observations of insect / plant interactions after dark are less well studied, especially pollination activities. Concerns about the impact of bright lights on the behaviour of night-flying moths assumed a greater importance when a report published in 2017 revealed that crop yields could be reduced by as much as 13% in well-lit areas as the pollinating moths became disorientated. Ongoing research is revealing the importance of various moths in pollinating flowers, including those of crops such as soft fruits, peas and beans.
Moths transport pollen on their tongues and undersides as they flit from flower to flower under the cover of darkness. Maintaining a wide variety of food plants for their caterpillars is a good reason for the retention of unmown verges, wildflower meadows or flower-rich gardens.
Darker nights also help our own appreciation of the wonders of the universe. Away from ‘civilisation’ there are many excellent locations for star gazing across the Hundred Parishes where there is little artificial light after dark. You can check the details for your own location on the online map of CPRE’s 2020 star count on www.cpre.org.uk/starcountresults.
Bright lights can be intrusive and there are concerns about their impact on human health and wellbeing. Local councils can adopt policies to tackle light pollution and protect our dark skies. Minimising the use of bright lights can save money and will enable moths to keep busy with their valuable pollination services in unlit areas.

I am a Careers Development Practitioner with over twenty five years experience of helping people to identify their career paths, set career goals and fulfil their career aspiration.
With a wealth of experience in Careers Guidance, Leadership and Management, I am able to draw upon a range of theories and frameworks to help achieve you reflect on your career, discover new passion and align your skills to new opportunities.
My coaching style is very much influenced by my client’s situation and goals and this is underpinned by my ethos of honesty, integrity, trust and transparency.
I am offering a limited number of Pro Bono careers coaching sessions to anyone who has lost their job during this COVID period. This can include CV writing and coaching for a job interview.
