The Bendabout International Cup has a fascinating history. It is one of the jewels of the collection of the Museum of Polo and was donated to the Museum by Helen Boehm, the famed porcelain manufacturer and

polo sponsor. The Museum is proud to lend it to be put back into service as the trophy for this International tournament that is hoped will become an annual event. This magnificent piece of art is by the renowned English silversmith Paul Storr revered as the greatest silversmith of his time (1771-1844). The Cup is hallmarked in several places as having been made by Storr in 1838. With dramatically detailed prancing horses surmounting its handles, the cup is very heavily embossed with Napoleonic era vignettes of soldiers firing cannon on one side of the bowl itself; the reverse is unadorned. It is an added bonus that there is no modern engraving on the trophy. For the purpose of the Bendabout International tournament, a wood base was built and will be engraved with the winners’ names each year. After a hard fought match with the gritty players representing South Africa, in its inaugural year 2013, it will bear the names of the winners, the team from USA, Gillian Johnston, Steve Orthwein, Jr. Julio Arellano and his son Agustin.
