Advantages of sourcing images this way:You can get images in different formats, for example 3 out of the four images I provided previously were painted illustrations the other one was like a sketched diagram identifying these particular plants.Another advantage is that you get to see how these images have developed overtime, the book I took these images from was made in 1868 they used illustrations to demonstrate how the flower looks because they could not photograph, a modern day book would probably just use a stock or original image of the flower.

Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:You may feel more restricted with content, for example this particular book that I have found has only illustrations, the client may want full-colour images even if I looked for another one of this particular genre the photographs could still be black and white. Another restriction content wise is that they may want an image of one flower in particular and if this flower is rare or even extinct that means that images of it could be scarce.Quality is also an element with this particular genre is getting a physical image digital, this could require scanning which can ruin the quality and have other destructive elements to it such as a book crease in the middle etc.

Google search: ‘English Flowers’

Page 5: Page layout t5 pro forma

Advantages of sourcing images this way:You can define your search until you find exactly what you were looking for e.g. rose > red rose > red rose bouquet.Google images searches these key words from all over the internet so you have a vast amount of potential images and you can even follow the link back to the page at which it was uploaded. You can also refine your search by size, colour, type and usage rights, for example if you had a particular big space on an article you wanted to fill with an image it would be better to get a bigger image and scale it down to the right size rather than having it up-scaled and pixelated.

Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:You can never be sure of the author or copyright on this particular image as you can not know clearly it’s origin. The more you refine your search the less subject-related content comes up in the search, this therefore makes it difficult to source a specific image standard when you have to rely on images created by someone else.Another disadvantage is that if your client is searching for an image that is niche and unique but the images that come up on Google search are available to a vast population and therefore you cannot guarantee that the client will be using an image that has been put on a variety of different publications.

Advantages of sourcing images this way:You can find a vast amount of good quality, professional looking images in almost every subject. The person/photographer who own the rights to the image gets paid for their work or credited, you can then use those images for either commercial or personal use.

Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:Unless you buy the stock images they frequently have a very big watermark on them stating the site in which they were received. You do of course have to pay for stock images and this is paying for the rights to use the images to their full potential this could be personally or commercially. On one stock image site it rated the value of their images by points, you would buy points with real money these when converted into points allow you the rights to download and use the image. The site set most of their images at one point and that one point is valued at a pound, if you are a company though you may consider buying a subscription to a stock image service, this when you add it up could be quite costly. You may still not be able to find the right image you or looking for or be that at the right size or shape and you may have to pay more for this particular specification

Advantages of sourcing images this way:The images have no copyright because you are the photographer/commissioner of these particular pieces. You have freedom with the content, if your client has asked for a particular angle in the image, size, shape etc. you can make sure that you image suits those requirements. You can also put the images in post-production and manipulate them to fit the brief and ensure that the client will be thoroughly pleased with the outcome.

Disadvantages of sourcing images this way:If the subject that you need to photograph is further away than possible, for example in a different country that you can’t get to for what ever reason you may have to resort to a different source. You may also not have the skill for the professional quality required or the time to create the images.

Resolution image:

300dpi for print

72dpi for web

Page 16: Page layout t5 pro forma

Advantages of different resolutions:The lower the resolution the less time it takes to load on webpages hence why the resolution for images is typically reduced to 72dpi, the file size is also smaller making it easier when needing to take/use lots of low res files.High res means more pixels and more pixels means that you can increase the size of your image without sacrificing the quality, this works well for prints, magazine advertisements and other larger images these are typically 300dpi.The biggest advantage about having a higher resolution image is that you can decrease the original images resolution to fit it’s purpose, you can crop the image beforehand to make sure it works in it’s provided space this cannot be said for low resolution images.

Disadvantages of different resolutions:If you take an image in a low resolution, this restricts you to the amount of pixels in which the image has to start with. This means that you need to be more considerate when cropping or re-sizing this can be a problem with formats such as articles.High res images are a problem when considering webpages, this is because they take longer for the page to process this can be a problem in many circumstances

Manipulated image with appropriate caption:

Rose located at Nortal Priory photographed in full bloom

Page 18: Page layout t5 pro forma

Explain the changes you made to the image and explain why you made those changes:Firstly, I cropped the image so that the rose was in the middle (to make the main subject centre to grab attention) and separated it from the background using the quick selection tool.I selected inverse and turned to background black and white darkening the leaves and green elements of the image with a bit of a blur. Finally, I added brightness, contrast and saturation to rose to make it pop form the background. All the changes I made to the image I did to exaggerate the colour and form of the rose, this almost meant adjusting the background. I wanted to do this for an artsy take on a pretty mainstream image subject, flowers are popular the rose being the most popular of them all.
