  • Knight and Family of the Month

The April Knight of the Month I am proud to announce PGK Tom Hoof as our April 2014 Knight of the Month. Tom is an active member of our council and Chairman of our Charity Committee. Charity Committee can sometimes be a thankless job but Tom always rises to the occasion and month after month Tom and the charity committee do a great job. Tom’s efforts are evident all fraternal year, but they were particularly demonstrated this past March as Tom, once again pulled off one of our biggest events of the year, the Annual Public Service Awards Dinner. Tom is also an active member of the Board of Directors for the Bishop Ireton Center. I am proud to announce PGK Tom Hoof as the Bishop Ireton Council 6189 Knight of the Month for April 2014 (GK Jack Simila) The April Family of the Month It is with great pleasure that I announce the family of George and Beppie Zuban as our April 2014 Family of the Month. George and Beppie are always ready when help is needed. Whenever we have an event they can be found in the kitchen preparing our meal. George is an active participant in our council meetings and is also an active member of the Bishop Ireton Board of Directors. George and Beppie are also very active members of St. Augustine Catholic Church. I am proud to announce George and Beppie as our April 2014 Family of the Month. Thank you George and Beppie for everything you do to support our council... (GK Jack Simila)

    State of BIC…

Our meeting was called to order at 7:00 on Tuesday March 4th. With all the snow this winter we have only had snow removal two times. Each removal cost $250.00. Gene Zimmerman, our Building Manager had a Health Inspection on Tuesday, Feb. 25th. The following items were cited: 1- cracks in the ice machine bin cover 2- 0-ring nut leaking on three compartment sink. Thanks to Brother Doug MacPherson for correcting this. 3- Butcher block table has to be resurfaced or replaced. We must maintain a clean kitchen and building at all times. These inspections are not taken lightly.

A meeting was held on ways to attract more customers. Among these are setting up the use of credit cards, painting of the office and updating the sign out front to include rental of the building. We were contacted by a company called Sustainable Technology Institute to give us a free energy audit on our duct systems. They

test for leaks in our systems. Any repairs to leaks will be made and Dominion Power will cover the cost. This has been done on Friday March 7th. Several ducts were not attached and one as large as 8 inches. We only have to

send them 2 referrals to have no cost. This has been done. I will not be in town for our next meeting so we have moved the date to 2nd Tuesday on April 8th at 7:00. Please support both the St. Patrick's Day Dinner/Dance and the Public Awards Dinner. Yours in service Jerry Duncan, BIC President Council 6189 Leadership …

We are in need of a person to fill the chair of Recorder. Brother knight of Council 6189, this fraternal year is fast approaching its 4th quarter . NOW IS THE TIME TO THINK ABOUT HOW A BROTHER KNIGHT CAN SERVE HIS COUNCIL for 2014-15 fiscal year. It will be helpful if the current officers make their intentions known as soon as possible so the nominating committee will know what vacancies will need filling. There are a number of brothers that are capable of serving and at this point what position they would like to serve in. Keep in mind that going through the chairs will give you the experience to be a great GRAND KNIGHT OF OUR COUNCIL 6189. I am a past grand knight and am willing to help you in making your decisions. I am sure the other PGKs feel the same as I do. Help is not that far away from you. My E- mail is [email protected] and my home phone is 804.233.1651. Please contact me now. (Gregory Toler PGK 2003-04)

    KOVAR

This year our KOVAR will tentatively take place in May and we are looking at the 16th and 17th of May to do this. Please respond quickly to a team captain so we can effectively plan our course of action. It makes planning a little more simple for those task with managing the program. If you served on a team last year, you know who your team captain is. Please - just make the call. If you did not participate last year, please do so this time around. Call PGK Jim Cooke at 739-6461 or email him at [email protected]. The more that cooperate early , the better we can plan. Please participate and help us out! There is much work to be done by Jim and his captains. You do not have to wait to be asked. Let's get this done quickly.

    Military Retiree News....

The proposed 2015 DOD budget could kill TRICARE Prime and increase out-of-pocket medical expenses for dependents and retirees. Much of the first reports on the proposed 2015 defense budget didn’t necessarily focus on the details or specific areas to be cut. Many of details won’t be available until March 4th. However, there are some details available on one of the most significant benefits areas to be hit – TRICARE. TRICARE, originally named for its three levels of health care coverage (Prime, Extra, and Standard), has been providing affordable healthcare coverage for military dependents and retirees for nearly 20 years. The DOD is proposing to merge the three options into a single fee-for-service insurance option, similar to the current Standard option. Beneficiaries could see lower costs if they use military treatment facilities or “preferred” care providers who offer military discounts. However, the plans include charging retirees a new co-pays for using on-base treatment facilities. New co-pays also would be set for military families and retirees who use emergency rooms inappropriately for routine care.. Go here for more: http://www.health.mil/FY15ProposedBudget ..Stay Tuned…

    Bingo Chairman....

We have a new Bingo Chairman - PGK Doug MacPherson has graciously stepped forward to keep manage the program in the absence of our Chancellor Jamie Miller. Jaime is being reassigned by the U.S. Army to Turkey but hopes to return in a year. He has done an outstanding job since December and he will be missed. We also pray for his safe journey when he starts his job transition. We are grateful to PGK Doug MacPherson for his active participation in our council. He always steps in to fill a void when needed - a dedicated Knight of Columbus.

  • A Note from your Insurance Agent

Plan for this tax day and into the future

April 15 (tax day) is right around the corner. It’s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a tax saving vehicle. A secondary approach is to tout the rate of interest that money in one of these accounts can earn. I encourage you to open or add funds to an annuity, but for a different reason. Certainly, contributing money to a Knights of Columbus annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. And our annuities do pay a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principle. Opening or adding to an annuity for these, however, strikes me as taking a short term view of a product that is designed to provide long term security. How much security? How does retirement income that you cannot outlive-guaranteed –sound to you? With the Knights of Columbus, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $300. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into that annuity over time can guarantee you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. That guarantee-along with the fact that no one has ever lost money in a Knights of Columbus annuity (absolute safety of principle) really will provide you with peace of mind. I am happy to meet with you to explain in detail the benefits

of opening a Knights of Columbus annuity, along with the benefits of our top rated life insurance, disability income and long term care insurance plans. Don Principe, FIC 804-873-873 [email protected]

    Food For Families Program…… .

In a country like the United States, no one should go hungry. Though we cannot feed all, there are some families in our communities that are hungry and need our help. How often do you contribute to the food pantry at your church? How many times have you "forgotten" to bring a food item for the basket that is always in the vestibule when you enter the church? We have all done it at one time or another. Well, during this Lenten season, we can make it by bringing those "forgotten" food items to the Bishop Ireton Center and leave them to be distributed among our churches' food pantries. Our goal is 1000 pounds. Let's do this as a council. We can do it. We have a special insert in the

Ireton Informer with more details. (PGK Dave Brennan)

    On Abortion...

Abortions are everything we should detest when it comes to destruction of human life. Read on, please...Planned Parenthood: 1 Adoption Referral per 149 Abortions: Planned Parenthood performed 327,166 abortion procedures in one year and made only 2,197 adoption referrals, according to its latest annual report — about 149 abortions for each referral. The report documents the "patient care" Planned Parenthood said its "affiliated centers" did from Oct. 1, 2011 to Sept. 30, 2012. The 2,197 adoption referrals the organization did in that period were down from 2,300 in the previous year. The report does not say how many of the referrals to other agencies actually resulted in an adoption. The report stated: "We are the most effective advocate in the country for policies that protect access to legal abortion." It also disclosed that 2.13 million women received birth control information and services from Planned Parenthood health centers during the one-year period. The organization's net revenue rose 5 percent to $1.21 billion in its fiscal year ending on June 30, 2013. About 45 percent of the revenue, $540.6 million, came from government grants and reimbursements. Planned Parenthood lobbied heavily in favor of the Affordable Care Act's mandatory contraception coverage, and its report called Obamacare - "a historic advance for women's health." Planned Parenthood kills more babies. Consider the toll and loss of human lives in the name of abortion. This more than we lose any our wars against terrorism
