FROM THE DESK OF FR. LUKE... DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PADRE LUKE...

The Gospel of Mark provides for us an important

insight in to the mind of God with regards to ambition. The

sons of Zebedee show great ambition for status in the King-

dom of God by wanting to sit on the right and left of Jesus

thus gaining the authority to carryout Christ’s rule in the

Kingdom. Naturally, the other disciples feel indignant to this

request because all those who are not on Christ’s right and

left would be subservient. The Ten disciples, who take of-

fence, to James’ and John’s request did not understand what

Jesus had just explained; to be great in the Kingdom is to be

servant, which Jesus fulfills by going to the cross. And, I do

not think James and John understood either. However, for all

of us looking back at this moment in Salvation history, we

can understand with the advantage of hindsight that status in

the Kingdome of God is achieved through personal sacrifice

for the good of others. The cup Christ drinks from is the

cross and his baptism is his death. And indeed, all but one

of the disciples drink from that cup and are baptized in their

martyrdom.

An important point to recognize is that Jesus does

not chastise the sons of Zebedee for their ambition, but rather

He simply explains what it means to have ambition in the

Kingdom of God. Essentially, the existence of ambition is

a good creation of God. However, misplaced ambition in

order to fulfill selfish desires is not a holy use of what God

has made: such as gaining for one’s self; or, supporting and

allowing for corruption; or, seeking wealth for its own sake;

or, sex outside of the nature of marriage. On the other hand,

ambition for Jesus and His Kingdom is good. Seeking to

make great Christ’s rule on earth means loving, sacrificing,

and committing all of who you are to Him. With holy ambi-

tion such as this, we not only reside on Christ’s right and left,

but we become the very hands of Jesus pierced by those

nails; and so, Christ we build up and manifest His Glory in

the world.

El Evangelio de Marcos nos proporciona una visión

importante de la mente de Dios con respecto a la ambición.

Los hijos de Zebedeo muestran una gran ambición por el

estatus en el Reino de Dios al querer sentarse a la derecha y

a la izquierda de Jesús, obteniendo así la autoridad para llevar

a cabo el gobierno de Cristo en el Reino. Naturalmente, los

otros discípulos se indignan ante esta petición porque todos

los que no están a la derecha y a la izquierda de Cristo

estarían subordinados. Los Diez discípulos, que se ofenden

ante la petición de Santiago y Juan, no entendieron lo que

Jesús acababa de explicar; ser grande en el Reino es ser

siervo, lo cual Jesús cumple llendo a la cruz. Y tampoco

creo que Santiago y Juan entendieran. Sin embargo, para

todos los que miramos hacia atrás en este momento de la

historia de la Salvación, podemos entender con la ventaja de

la retrospectiva que el estatus en el Reino de Dios se logra a

través del sacrificio personal por el bien de los demás. La

copa de la que bebe Cristo es la cruz y su bautismo es su

muerte. Y de hecho, todos menos uno de los discípulos beben

de esa copa y son bautizados en su martirio.

Un punto importante a reconocer es que Jesús no

castiga a los hijos de Zebedeo por su ambición, sino que

simplemente explica lo que significa tener ambición en el

Reino de Dios. Esencialmente, la existencia de la ambición

es una buena creación de Dios. Sin embargo, la ambición

fuera de lugar para satisfacer deseos egoístas no es un uso

santo de lo que Dios ha hecho: como ganar para uno mismo;

o, apoyando y permitiendo la corrupción; o buscando la

riqueza por sí misma; o sexo fuera de la naturaleza del

matrimonio. Por otro lado, la ambición por Jesús y Su Reino

es buena. Tratar de hacer grande el gobierno de Cristo en la

tierra significa amar, sacrificar y entregarle todo lo que eres.

Con una santa ambición como esta, no solo residimos a la

derecha y a la izquierda de Cristo, sino que nos convertimos

en las mismas manos de Jesús traspasadas por esos clavos;

y así, Cristo, edificamos y manifestamos Su Gloria en el

mundo.

We are collecting cakes/desserts to be donated for our “Cake-Dessert Walk” to be held at our Trunk-or -Treat . You will have a chance at winning a cake or dessert. A winner at every game. FREE! and mercy? If you are struggling with this, try changing your

attitude from “I want more” to a Stewardship attitude: “Thank

you, God for everything you have given me, I have enough to

share”. This change in perspective will bring you joy through

service to others. Pray daily to become less self-centered and to

become more God-centered.
