The Friday Arizona Republic last week had a long write-up by movie reviewer Bill Goodykoontz about George Lucas’ popular coming-of-age film, “American Graffiti.” The film starred the voice of Wolfman Jack, plus Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, Candy Clark, Mackenzie Phillips, Charles Martin Smith, and Cindy Williams. An unknown Harrison Ford appears because he was doing some carpentry work for Lucas and the director asked him to play a teenage drag racer. Of course, the rest is history, as many of the actors became famous stars, and several have received Oscar nominations and Emmy awards. And George

Let’s help Buzzy’s rebuildLucas created “Star Wars.” But many people believe that the true star of the movie was Mel’s drive-in, the local fast food joint that the kids all cruised in whatever vehicle they could get the keys to. I’ve often told out-of-town friends about Kearny’s own version of Mel’s drive-in, which, of course, is Buzzy’s. On Friday nights after a home football game of our Ray Bearcats, we can see a long snake-like procession of headlights coming up Tilbury Hill, as the Kearny kids cruise from Constitution Hall by the railroad tracks, up to Buzzy’s, onto Alden Road and downtown Kearny proper. They then make the

turn-around between Cosmic Coffee and the ARC/NEPC building and continue their loop back past Buzzy’s and down Tilbury Hill. Anytime someone visits us, Buzzy’s is on our list. Some people drive into Kearny simply to get Buzzy’s Famous Fry Bread. We always tell people Buzzy’s has the best French Fries on the planet. And whenever we get nostalgic for a Butterscotch Milk Shake we’d walk to Buzzy’s.With “American Graffiti” celebrating its 40th anniversary I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate the many years we’ve all enjoyed Buzzy’s. And lend some support to the

efforts of many people for Operation Rebuild Buzzy’s. Visit Facebook.com to sign up. Thanks for all the memories, and here’s to many, many more in the future./s/ Gerry KaufholdKearny

Medicare Open Enrollment (October 15-December 7, 2013) is the time when all people with Medicare are encouraged to review their current health and prescription drug coverage, including any changes in costs, coverage and benefits that will take effect next year. If you want to change your coverage for next year, this is the time to do it. If you’re satisfied that your current coverage will continue to meet your needs for next year, you don’t need to do anything. For more information on Medicare Open Enrollment, visit

Medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE.The Health Insurance Marketplace Open enrollment period (October 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014) The Health Insurance Marketplace is designed to help people who don’t have any health insurance. You have health insurance through Medicare. The Marketplace won’t have any effect on your Medicare coverage. It’s against the law for someone who knows you have Medicare to sell you a Marketplace plan. Note: The Health Insurance Marketplace Open Enrollment period

Information people with Medicare should know

overlaps with the Medicare Open Enrollment period. Therefore, people with Medicare who are looking to make Medicare coverage changes should make sure that they are reviewing Medicare plans and not Marketplace options. The Marketplace provides new health insurance options for many Americans. If you have family and friends who don’t have health insurance, tell them to visit HealthCare.gov to learn more about their options. (This information is provided by the United States Department of Health and Human Services) Pinal- Gila Council for Seniors Citizens (PGCSC) has scheduled enrollment events in Pinal and Gila Counties to help with Medicare Open Enrollment. The PGCSC is part of the Arizona State Health Insurance Program (SHIP). SHIP counselors are available to conduct on-line comparisons, assist with enrollment in a plan of your choice, assistance with applications and screening for extra help programs. Be sure and bring a list of prescriptions to help with prescription drug provider comparisons.

This year Jessica Gerola, a Superior resident, has committed to walk 60 miles in the Susan G. Komen Tempe Arizona 3-Day along with thousands of other women and men who are walking to make a personal difference in the fight to end breast cancer. Jessica has already embarked on a physical and emotional journey in preparing for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day®. Like other Komen 3-Day participants, she will spend months training for the event’s physical demands and fundraising at least $2,300 to help fund innovative breast cancer research, scientific programs and community outreach programs. All of the participants’ dedication and preparation culminates by walking 60 miles over the course of three days. “You may be wondering why I am waking 60 miles and raising a minimum of $2,300 in donations. I am determined to meet this personal goal because of

a very special person. My mother Maria D. Sestiaga (Mary Dee) lost her battle with breast cancer on July 25, 1995. I was just 6 years old at the time, I wouldn’t wish for anyone to have to lose a parent at such a young age. I always feel

like something is missing in my life, so that is why this cause means so much to me. 60 miles is no easy task, but this is something I can do. Something I must do,” said Jessica. “I feel that with my dedication and your support, I can be part of the boldest movement to end breast cancer forever.” The Susan G. Komen Tempe Arizona 3-Day is a place in the world where differences are embraced, bonds are formed, and every moment—from the opening ceremony on Friday morning, Nov. 8 to closing ceremony on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 11—is full of meaning, emotion and celebration. Walkers cover about 20 miles a day with hundreds of dedicated volunteers and crew members supporting the walkers through the 3-day journey. The best way we can make a difference is to raise awareness – October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, so remember to wear your

pink ribbons. People can also display a pink ribbon pumpkin as one of your fall decorations, Jessica is currently busy hand painting them and taking orders. Interested parties can find out more by emailing Jessica at [email protected] or calling her directly at 520-509-5950. Each year, more than 200,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and nearly 2,000 cases are diagnosed in men in the U.S. To help Jessica reach her goal of a world without breast cancer, you can make a donation at the3day.org/ to make an online donation in an amount that works.

Interested parties can also call 800-996-3DAY, or print off one of Jessica’s personalized donation forms from the website listed above and mail in a check. People can even spread credit card donation over monthly payments, and companies may even offer to match a donation through their Matching Gifts program. No donation is too big – or too small. All donations are tax deductible. About the Susan G. Komen 3-Day® The Susan G. Komen 3-Day® is a 60-mile walk for women and men who want to be a part of something bigger – ending breast cancer forever. Participants raise a

minimum of $2,300 and walk an average of 20 miles a day for three consecutive days, educating tens of thousands of people about breast health and raising funds to help support breast cancer research and community outreach programs. With every step, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has helped make significant progress in the fight against breast cancer thanks to events like the Komen 3-Day. 75 percent of the net proceeds raised by the Susan G. Komen 3-Day help support Komen’s Research and Training Grant Program and large public health outreach programs for women

By Andrew LuberdaSuperior Sun The Superior Panthers dropped their third straight game last Friday night as they were defeated by the Joseph City Wildcats, 58 – 22. In each of the Panthers’ three losses they have shown the ability to move the ball offensively and score points. The defensive side of the ball is an area in need of quick improvement. Junior Marcus Hircheta replaced the injured Edgar Galindo at running back and had a career game with 114 all-purpose yards and 2 TD. Nicolaus Cruz and Elias Olmos shared time

at the quarterback position and each performed well. Cruz was a triple threat in the game with 11 yards rushing, 43 yards passing, and 48 yards receiving. Olmos had 36 yards rushing and 85 yards passing. The Panthers’ leading receivers in the game were Matthew Zavala, Austin Navarrete and Quinten Walters. Juniors Matthew Zavala (9 tackles) and Oscar Rangel (5 tackles) led the way for the Panthers’ defense. The Panthers will travel to Pima, AZ to face the undefeated Pima Roughriders on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at 7 p.m.

By Rev. Dennis Van Gorp Family Life Christian Center In 2 Samuel 21, we read the story of King David, King Saul and the Gibeonites. It tells us that the sins of our ancestors, if not removed or repented of, will endanger our well being. By taking care of the situation, a three year long famine was ended. All sin, according to the Bible, comes with a curse. But, God gave us His plan of salvation, which includes His forgiveness of our sins. It is not necessary for us to live under any curse or ancestral problem. When we have wronged

God, we must sincerely seek and ask for His forgiveness. It is easy to simply ask Him to forgive our wrongdoing. By doing so, we will not experience the stress and frustration that sin produces in our lives. Also, when we ask the Lord to forgive our sins, our children and grandchildren will not inherit the tendency toward those sins in their lives. To live in freedom is a blessing. Make life easier on yourself and your family – ask God to forgive your sins. He will do just that, allowing your conscience to be free from guilt or shame. Living without worries or regrets is true freedom. Do it today and live free.

By Mila Besich LiraSuperior Sun Every year volunteers at the St. Francis Church prepare for months in advance to celebrate the annual Fiesta’s Patrias. The event is one of the parish’s largest fundraisers and definitely requires the most volunteers. For months in advance, members coordinate items and volunteers for their respective booths, including the creation of over 4,000 cascarone (confetti eggs). The theme for this year’s event was “Joy in Serving”. The two day event began with a parade on Main St. This year the church recognized Yolanda Guzman as the grand marshall. Guzman has been a steadfast volunteer to the parish as well as the community. The parade included several entries including the Knights of Columbus and several past Fiesta Queens who submitted entries. Award winners in the parade were: First Place: Queens Float entered by Marcella Garcia; Second Place: Copper Triangle and Third Place: Baile Folklorico Alma de Superior. Winners were awarded ribbons and prize money. Following the parade, more than 170 cars lined Main St. for the annual car show. Car show organizers promised a bigger show than before and they honored their promise. The car show had car clubs visiting from as far as Las Vegas. This year the show was dedicated to Joe Castaneda. Castaneda was a main organizer with his wife Pati. Castaneda passed away unexpectedly earlier this year. Winning the car show categories were: Best of Show Bike: Ruben Joya Phoeniquera of Classics Car ClubBest of Show Motorcycle: Ray Maldonado of Tiempo Car Club of Las Vegas,

Public NoticeScoping Meetings

Proposed Tailings Storage FacilityRay Mine – Pinal County, Arizona

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District (“Corps”) is hosting two public open house scoping meetings regarding a proposed tailings storage facility that Asarco LLC (“Asarco”) is proposing for the Ray Mine in Pinal County. These meetings will be held on Tuesday evening, September 24, 2013 at the Ray Elementary School cafeteria from 6:00 to 9:00 PM and on Wednesday evening and on September 25, 2013 in the Performing Arts Center at the Apache Junction High School in Apache Junction, Arizona from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. The Corps will provide a presentation each evening starting at 7:00 PM. To comply with Corps’ regulations associated with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, Asarco has submitted an application to the Corps for the proposed tailings storage facility. Because the proposed tailings storage facility will directly impact waters of the U.S., the Corps has decided to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The Corps is seeking public comment on Asarco’s plans to construct and operate the proposed tailings storage facility that would impact Ripsey Wash and other ephemeral drainages that are tributary to the Gila River. Asarco has stated that this facility is required to support continued long-term copper mining activities at the Ray Mine. Tailings from the Ray Mine concentrator would be transported via a new tailings pipeline that would cross the Gila River near the current Florence-Kelvin highway bridge. Water would be recycled back to the Ray Mine concentrator from the proposed tailings storage facility. The proposed facility is designed to store approximately 750 million tons of tailings and would have a facility footprint of approximately 2,129 acres once completed. The two public open house meetings will allow interested parties to learn more about Asarco’s plans, the Corps’ regulatory obligations under its 404 permit process, and the plans and schedule for completion of an EIS for the proposed project. The Corps is soliciting public comment on the issues and concerns that should be examined in the forthcoming EIS and requests that any comments on that proposal be submitted in writing to Michael Langley, Senior Project Manager, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District – Arizona Regulatory Branch, 3636 North Central Avenue, Suite 900, Phoenix, Arizona 85012-1939 or via email at [email protected]. The Corps requests that commenters include their full name, physical address and the project title “Ray Mine Tailings Storage Facility Project” with any comments. The official EIS scoping period closes on Monday, October 28, 2013. Comments should be postmarked or emailed by the close of that date. Michael Langley, the Corps’ project manager, is available to answer questions about the proposed project and the EIS scoping process, including these two public open house scoping meetings, at telephone number 602-230-6953. Information for the proposed tailings storage facility is available on the Corps’ website at http://www.spl.usace.army.mil/Missions/Regulatory/ProjectsPrograms.aspx or contact Michael Langley at the Corps at the aforementioned address and telephone number. Superior Head Start finds creative ways to enrich the minds of the chil-dren to prepare them for the Kindergarten experience that’s both fun and stimulating. The children participate in various “centers” in the classroom where they are encouraged to take part in cooking projects, reading books with teachers, using

computers, participating in problem solving activities, do art, music and perform sci-ence experiments, build with blocks, besides taking part in dramatic play activities using the curriculum.
