NAPLAN 2020

Our school will be completing NAPLAN online again this year. This means our Year 3 and 5 students will complete NAPLAN assessments online rather than on paper. The Year 3 writing test will continue to be paper-based, but all other Year 3 NAPLAN tests will be online. Our school will participate in a series of activities to prepare students. These preparation activities confirm that our school is ready from a technological point of view. Our teachers and students will be involved in preparation and practice activities in the lead up to NAPLAN. This will include participation in a practice test during March, where students will have a further opportunity to become familiar with the online platform and the type of questions they will be asked in NAPLAN Online. More information is available on the NSW Department of Education NAPLAN Online website: https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/student-assessment/naplan-online/getting-ready/parent-information 2020 VOLUNTEER ETHICS TEACHERS NEEDED Teaching our kids to *THINK*REASON*DISCUSS*. SRE lessons are held on Tuesday mornings from 9:20am-9:55am each week. What do the children learn? To explore ethical issues with confidence through the give-and-take of reasoned argument. They will learn to disagree respectfully, to challenge ideas and support their arguments with considered experience rather than according to habit or peer pressure. What do I need to become a teacher? Ethics offer a unique training program with FULLY SCRIPTED LESSONS (no preparation needed!!) you don't need to be a teacher or a philosopher, just a love of learning and a genuine interest in the future of our young ones. What does the training involve? Online short half hour courses (completed in your own time) and 2 days offsite workshop with a group of other Ethics teachers (you can choose your days). Please feel free to call our Ethics Co-Ordinator for more info or just to discuss: Alessia Jolesz 0413 470 559 It will be the decisions of the children we teach today that will shape our world tomorrow!! ACTIVE KIDS AND CREATIVE KIDS

Active Kids and Creative Kids are programs designed to encourage more children to participate in sport, active

recreation and creative and cultural activities. Each year, parents, guardians and carers can receive a $100 voucher to

go towards both creative and physical activities for school aged children. That’s $200 worth of savings per year for

each child.

A Creative Kids voucher will help parents to cover some of the registration, participation and tuition costs on activities such as singing, drama, coding, languages, music, writing, drawing and photography.

The Active Kids voucher can be used on sports, fitness and physical activities for registration, participation and membership costs. The vouchers can be used once with an approved provider. To find out more, parents need to visit https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-creative-kids-voucher

Please note, these vouchers are NOT able to be used for school sport.

JUNIOR DANCE

ALLERGY AWARENESS

PLEASE REMEMBER: AVOID SENDING NUT PRODUCTS TO SCHOOL, ESPECIALLY PEANUT BUTTER AND NUTELLA. ALSO, TO ASSIST

US IN PROVIDING A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR CHILDREN WITH POTENTIAL ANAPHYLAXIS, PLEASE ASK YOUR CHILD NOT TO

SHARE FOOD. WHILE NUTS ARE THE MOST PUBLICISED ISSUE, THERE IS ALSO A RANGE OF OTHER FOODS TO WHICH SOME OF

OUR CHILDREN MAY REACT. FOR EXAMPLE, AN ALLERGY TO SHELLFISH MAY OCCUR BY EATING SOMETHING MADE WITH

OYSTER SAUCE. RATHER THAN HAVE A LONG LIST OF “BANNED” ITEMS, IT IS SAFER IF ALL OUR STUDENTS EAT ONLY THE FOOD

SUPPLIED BY THEIR OWN PARENTS.

ES (EASTERN SUBURBS) PSSA CODE OF CONDUCT

The following information regarding the PSSA Code of Conduct is for parents and carers who attend PSSA games and

carnivals. Students who are selected to represent Pagewood PS will be given a copy of the Players’ Code of Conduct.

Further information is available at http://easternsuburbs.sessazones.com/codes-of-conduct/

Codes of Behaviour provide a supportive framework which

promotes fair play and appropriate behaviour in school sport.

These codes apply to players, teachers, coaches, principals,

parents, officials and spectators who together provide the

environment in which school sport is played. The following Codes

apply to school sport at all levels and are designed to highlight:

The principles of enjoyment, satisfaction and safe play in

sport

That students participate for their own sake and not to fulfil the desires of parents, adult groups or peers

The encouragement of student participation in sport and, in so doing, contribute to higher levels of health

and physical fitness.

PARENTS’ CODE

Encourage your child to always play by the rules.

If children are interested in sport, encourage them to participate. Refrain from forcing an unwilling child to participate.

Remember that children participate in organised school sports for their enjoyment and fulfilment, not yours.

Teach your child that honest effort is as important as winning so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.

Encourage your child to work towards skill improvement. Never ridicule your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.

Always encourage the principle of good sportsmanship.

Children learn best by example. Applaud good play by all individuals and all teams.

Do not publicly question the officials’ judgement and never their honesty.

Appreciate the contribution and commitment of teachers in coaching positions. They give their time and resources to provide sporting activities for your child and deserve your support.

Have realistic expectations for your child and her or his team. Do not expect more than they can give.

Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities. Condemn the use of violence in any form.

HARMONY DAY

On Thursday 19 March we will celebrate Harmony Day as a school

community. This is a day where we celebrate inclusiveness, respect and

belonging for all Australians. The students will complete a range of

Harmony Day activities within their classrooms.

Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day and students are able to celebrate by wearing the colour

orange to school on Thursday 19 March. Students may wear orange mufti clothing, or their school uniform with a

‘splash of orange’.

CYBER SAFETY

Do your children use the internet unsupervised? Do you know what they are

actually doing online? Which games are your children playing? Who are they

communicating with? How are they communicating? There is often media

attention drawn to the online behaviour of children and young adults. At

some point in time your child may be involved in online bullying or

inappropriate behaviour. This out of school interaction may then continue in

school time which impacts on the wellbeing of themselves and others. We

will be organising a presentation from our local Police Liaison Officer for

both Stage 3 students as well as parents this year. In the interim, please

access a range of excellent parent resources from the Office of the eSafety

Commissioner here: https://www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent
