Page 2: Pain%ng’Rusty’Metal’on’ Residen%al’Buildings’ red/ brown rust is the iron rusting and the white rust is the corrosion of the zinc. • Copper is a non ferrous metal that

Where could I see rusty metal on buildings?

•  Roofs •  Flashings and fascia •  Spouting, guttering and downpipes •  Nail heads •  Corner and flat soakers on weatherboards •  Window and door fittings •  Hinges on gates, doors and windows •  Letterboxes •  Meter boxes •  Fences/ railings

Page 3: Pain%ng’Rusty’Metal’on’ Residen%al’Buildings’ red/ brown rust is the iron rusting and the white rust is the corrosion of the zinc. • Copper is a non ferrous metal that

What else could I be painting that might be rusty?

•  Tools •  Machinery •  Electrical appliances ( washing

machines/ fridges etc) •  Garden ornaments •  Patio furniture •  Signage

Page 4: Pain%ng’Rusty’Metal’on’ Residen%al’Buildings’ red/ brown rust is the iron rusting and the white rust is the corrosion of the zinc. • Copper is a non ferrous metal that

•  Metal exist in their natural, stable state in the form of chemical compounds called ores

•  Significant quantities of energy is required to convert these ores into metal

•  Metals will revert back to their natural stable state over time if not suitably protected •  Elements required : water, oxygen and ions •  Ions may be from water : H+ OH- or salt : Na+ Cl- •  The presence and concentration of ions determines the rate of corrosion (i.e. current carrying capacity) •  This is why corrosion is accelerated in regions where there is seawater (salt Na+ Cl-) i.e. a high concentration of ions

Why do Metals Rust?

Page 5: Pain%ng’Rusty’Metal’on’ Residen%al’Buildings’ red/ brown rust is the iron rusting and the white rust is the corrosion of the zinc. • Copper is a non ferrous metal that

Why do I see white rust and red/ brown rust?

•  Ferrous metals like iron and steel rust with a red/ brown rust •  Non ferrous metals like aluminium and metals that are zinc

modified such galvanised iron and zincalume corrode with a white rust. Galvanised Iron can show both white and red/ brown rust. The red/ brown rust is the iron rusting and the white rust is the corrosion of the zinc.

•  Copper is a non ferrous metal that corrodes to a green patina called verdigris that protects the surface. •  The Statue of Liberty is made of copper and has corroded to the green patina we see today.

Page 6: Pain%ng’Rusty’Metal’on’ Residen%al’Buildings’ red/ brown rust is the iron rusting and the white rust is the corrosion of the zinc. • Copper is a non ferrous metal that

Do I need to prepare the rusty metal before painting?

•  Painting over a rusty surface that has not been prepared is a waste of time effort and money.

•  Failure to prepare the rusty surface

allows the rust to keep degrading the metal under the new coating system causing premature failure of the coating and greater damage to the metal surface

Page 7: Pain%ng’Rusty’Metal’on’ Residen%al’Buildings’ red/ brown rust is the iron rusting and the white rust is the corrosion of the zinc. • Copper is a non ferrous metal that

•  Steel/Wrought Iron - Remove any loose and flakey rust by scraping, sanding or wire brushing. Wipe surface clean with mineral turpentine to remove residual rust, grease, oil and dirt. Treat any remaining residual rust with Dulux Quit Rust Rust Remover.

•  Galvanised Iron/ zinc modified surfaces – Remove white rust by wire brushing or scraping. Be careful to avoid damaging the protective galvanised film. Clean with sugar soap solution and rinse off thoroughly.

•  Copper – Remove verdigris by wire brushing or scraping. Clean with sugar soap solution and rinse off thoroughly

Following surface preparation the cleaned and dried surface should be primed as soon as possible.

How do I prepare rusty metal?

Page 8: Pain%ng’Rusty’Metal’on’ Residen%al’Buildings’ red/ brown rust is the iron rusting and the white rust is the corrosion of the zinc. • Copper is a non ferrous metal that

Product Description A preparation product for the treatment and removal of heavy rust from all ferrous metals. A protective phosphate coating forms providing improved durability and adhesion of subsequent paint applications

Use on: Ideal for the treatment and removal of rust from all ferrous metals especially where it is impractical to completely remove the rust by conventional methods.

Apply with: Paint Brush. Apply rigorously to the surface and allow to dry. When dry the rust will have been converted into a black protective phosphate coating that can now be primed.

Drying: Touch dry 30 mins Recoat: Paint surface between 2 – 24 hours after

application and must be painted within one week of application of Dulux Quit Rust Rust Remover.

Coverage Brush thoroughly onto the surface Clean up: Water

Prime with….Dulux Quit Rust Galvanised Iron Primer Plus

Product Description A water based primer which provides excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance for all types of new or weathered galvanised and zinc coated surfaces. It is also suitable for all other metals including steel and wrought iron.

Use on: Can be applied to all cleaned galvanised iron and zinc coated surfaces before coating with Dulux enamels and acrylic coatings

Apply with: Brush, roller, airless spray & conventional spray

Drying: 20 mins @ 25 degrees celcius Recoat: 2 Hours @ 25 degrees celcius Coverage 15sqm/l Clean up: Water

Or Prime with…….Dulux Quit Rust Metal Primer

Product Description A rust inhibiting enamel primer for common metal surfaces except zinc and galvanised metal surfaces. It is ideally suited to priming steel and wrought iron surfaces

Use on: Most common metals including steel and wrought iron. Must not be used on zinc or galvanised surfaces.

Apply with: Brush, roller, airless spray & conventional spray

Drying: 5 Hours

Recoat: 16 Hours

Coverage 9 sqm/l

Clean up: Mineral Turpentine

Or in really severe conditions…. Dulux Quit Rust Cold Galv Primer

Product Description A heavy duty zinc rich primer that provides excellent protection to the complete paint system even under the most severe corrosive conditions

Use on: Use as a sacrificial protection to steel and wrought iron substrates even under the most extreme conditions. Can also be used to repair damaged galvanised steel

Apply with: Brush, roller, airless spray & conventional spray

For small or irregular shaped projects….

Dulux Spraypak Aerosol cans

•  For small jobs Dulux Spraypak aerosol cans are ideal. Included in the range is a anti corrosive primer for metal.

•  A large range of top coat colours (21) are available in Spraypak quick dry enamel.

•  Spraypak Appliance White is matched to the Fisher and Paykel white for touching up appliances.

•  All these products mentioned are low aromatic and low odour for safer use and to discourage sniffers.

What Top coats should I use? •  Top coats should only be applied after the

metal surface has been properly prepared and primed with the appropriate primer.

•  Use a waterbased product like Dulux Weathershield X10, Dulux Roof & Trim or Dulux Aquanamel. Applying a minimum of 2 coats over the primed surface.

•  For a Oil based finish Apply 1 coat of Dulux 1 step Oil based and 2 coats Dulux Super Enamel or Dulux Super Satin (Interior Only)

A Dulux Protective coatings system should be used for a commercial project. Call Dulux Customer Services.
