SOURSES OF ELECTRICITY IN PAKISTAN

A) Thermal:-At, present thermal power generation stood at 8,300MW but these plants have low conversion efficiencies and expensive to maintain and operate. Most of the thermal power plants installed by IPPS, use furnace oil which has become very expensive.

B) HYDRO POWER:-Hydro power is generated by using electricity generators to extract energy from moving water. Pakistan is having rich resource of energy in Hydel power, however only 34% is coming from Hydel power. Currently we are having 6555 MW.

C) WIND:-Wind power produce by the rotation of the blades of wind turbines.Though Pakistan has potentials of wind energy ranging from 10,000 MW to 50,000 MW. Yet power generation through wind is in initial stages in Pakistan.

D) SOLAR:-Solar power involves using solar cells to convert sun light in to electricity , using sun light hitting solar thermal panels to converts sun light to heat energy.Pakistan has potential of more than 100,000 MW from solar energy.

E) Agriculture Biomass / Biodiesel:-Biomass production involves using garbage or other renewable resources such as sugarcane, corn, or other vegetation to generate electricity. When Garbage decomposes, Methane is produced and captured in pipes and later burned to produce Electricity.Pakistan has planned to generate 10 MW from this phenomena.

F) NUCLEAR:-Nuclear power stations use nuclear fission reaction to generate energy by the reaction of uranium inside a nuclear reactor. Pakistan has a small nuclear power plant , with 425 MW capacity.

• Thermal power stations1. WAPDA operates-11 stations (11327MW)2. KESC operates -4 stations (1756MW)3. IPPS operates-14 stations independently(5977MW)• Hydel power Generation1. Tarbela Dam1750 MW2. Mangla Dam-900MW• Nuclear power generation Two nuclear reactors of 1462MW power to generate electricity

SUPPLY AND DEMANDThe total power production capacity in

country is 19,500MWCountry is falling short of 4500MWThe demand of electricity is growing at the

annual rate of 9%,while supply of electricity is increasing at comparatively slower rate of 7%

SUPPLY AND DEMAND

According to a survey1. Household sector 44.2%2. Industries 31.1%3. Agriculture 14.3%4. Government sector 7.4%5. Commercial 5.5%6. Street lights 0.7%

Major issues of power sector in Pakistan

Most of the new thermal power plants are based on fuel oil

Cost of electricity generations Crude oil prices Fuel transporation Gas is not available for new power plants Un efficient energy useage No incentive from the government to develop

alternative energy resources

Page 26: Pakistan power sector overview issues and recommendations

Recommendations• Development of alternative energy

• The Regulator should be linient in tariff for wind and solar power plants

• Manufacturing facility for wind and solar power plants be encouraged by the government

• Coal should be used for power generation including imported Coal

• Thermal power plants should be installed by WAPDA in parllel to IPPs

• energy conservation and efficiency improvement

• Industrial sector should be encouraged to install their own power plants and surplus should be purchased by WAPDA at a competitive price
