alimala is located in the homonymous
street, Via Calimala, in the heart of the historicalCcentre of Florence. The major tourist attractions are all nearby:
the Cathedral, Piazza della Signoria, Piazza della Repubblica, the
Old Bridge, the Uffizzi Gallery and Piazza Strozzi among others.
The late 19th century palace was built during the restructuring
of the Florentine historical centre, when the capital city of Italy
was moved to Florence. The building occupies the same area
where in the past the historical houses of Cavallereschi and
Borromei family was erected.
The palace is a rare example of a detached building in Florence,
independent on four sides. It is composed by a big structure (six
floors above ground) and characterized by a rectangular plan.
The main entrance is located in Via Calimala. The other three
sides lie respectively in Via Porta Rossa, Via de’ Lamenti and Via
Arte della Lana. From an architectural point of view, Calimala
does not reflect the purpose of reproducing Renaissance models.
Indeed, it wants to express a late 19th-century sensitivity, well-
represented by the couples of winged angels which reflect the
style of that period, despite some elements of the Mannerist
art.
The above section of the four sides of the palace are decorated
by using the graffiti technique. This latter consists of drawing on
fresh plaster by using white-hot iron. The monochrome painting
PUTTO IS A HIGHLY
EVOLVED BEING,A INDEED MESSENGER
BETWEEN MORTALS AND THE UNIVERSAL CREATORS
used for the decorations on the four sides is a distinctive
element of that period. Since its origins, the magnificence of
the building is reflected in the incredible richness of details,
characterized by angular rustication, alternance of curved
and triangular shelves and tympanums in the window frames.
Windows are characterized by the “Florentine-style” pocket
sliding shutters.
The interior of the building, unlike the exterior, was subjected
to lots of changes over time, if compared to its original
characteristics. Not in terms of structure, rather for what
concerns the floorings and the ceilings, that were largely
substituted . The fith and the sixth floor were subjected to
the most important changes.
Thanks to its history, its architectural features and location,
Calimala uniqueness contributes to make Florence so prestigious.
This is absolutely an iconic building for an iconic city.
